The job of the mid layer is to provide warmth (more so than the base layer). Its function is to insulate you from the cold and continue to wick moisture away. (Of course, you may not need this layer at all in warm conditions, but it’s good to have in your pack).

• Dress shirt – You can wear your dress shirt as part of a casual outfit if paired with jeans to go out to a restaurant or with your pants for a dress casual look. Look for shirts with smaller patterns or in solid colors. Cotton is a good, breathable choice for any season.
• Casual or sports shirts. You might have plaids, stripes, patterns or solids. Fabrics can include things like twill, cotton or denim. The key thing for looking good is the fit. Your shirt should fit you well and comfortably trim.

A single-breasted coat also tends to suit most body types well, and will be flattering if the fit is tailored.

Waterproof nylon coat

Almost everyone needs a waterproof nylon coat of some type, so we’ve given this coat its own section. They may come with or without a hood and often have a removable wind barrier in the chest area. For winter in chilly areas, look for a quilted lining and warm fill to insulate the body from cold.

You might also see waterproof nylon coats in parka, raincoat or trench coat styles, with various weights and levels of warmth. Trench coat

The trench coat dates back to the First World War, when it was designed to be worn in the trenches by British troops. The famous version of the coat was designed by Thomas Burberry and made from his own gabardine fabric. This fabric was designed to be lightweight and weatherproof – the coat soon became part of everyday wear.

Trench coats are double-breasted and feature epaulettes, storm flaps at the shoulder, wide lapels, buttoned pockets and a waist belt that cinches with a buckle. They are traditionally worn long, down to the shins, although may also be found slightly shorter.

You can wear a trench coat with your suit and look dapper in slightly warmer climates, with the added benefit of waterproofing for wet weather. Choose a neutral or dark color for maximum versatility.

Top off your look

Here in the Northeast, we’re used to frigidly cold temperatures over the winter months. Your overall comfort and style will be added to if you top off your winter coat selection with good scarves and gloves.

Whether it’s for weddings, graduations, birthdays, Thanksgiving or other key events, sometimes you need everyone to be putting their best foot forward. It’s always nice if the event photographs turn out well!

Here are a few tips to be prepared for any family occasion:

Do an inventory of what you have first

Has your family ever faced this scenario? You’re getting ready to go out when someone has an issue with their wardrobe. “Dad, my shoes don’t fit,” or “there’s a hole in my shirt!” It always adds tension to the situation when there is a last-minute mishap that needs attention. You end up trying to make do or purchase a replacement at the last minute.

Our first suggestion is that you do an inventory of what each member of your family has available well beforehand. This includes trying the whole outfit on so that those holes, stains or items that don’t fit anymore can be found early.

Knowing what you have available and what condition the items are in will kick-start you with a plan for getting everyone dressed for the event. We recommend you do this two or three weeks ahead, but not so early that younger kids have time to grow out of their outfit. 

For the adults, this also gives you the opportunity to get any needed alterations made, such as having suit jackets taken in or hems repaired. One of the top tips for looking good is to ensure that clothing fits well.

Know the dress code

As part of your planning, do you know the dress code for the event and what it means? For example, weddings are a common event where the whole family may be invited, especially if the wedding is within your own family. Some typical dress codes include:

1. Black tie – Very formal and usually reserved for evening affairs. For men and boys that means tuxedos while for women and girls, floor-length evening gowns.
   
2. White tie – More formal than black tie. It is relatively rare for any event suitable for “family” to be white tie as this is the code for events such as state dinners. White tie means full-length ball gowns for females and tuxedos with long tails, white vest and a white bow tie for males.
   
3. Casual – This may be themed in some way if it is a wedding or other type of special occasion, in which case, dress to the theme. In most cases, “casual” for a wedding will mean summer dresses for females and dress pants with a button-down shirt for males.
   
4. Beach formal – Formal summer dresses for females and linen suits for males.

If the event is taking place in a church or place of worship, there may be other aspects of dress code to consider. For example, many such places require that shoulders be covered and some also expect clothing to go below the knee. It’s always a good idea to check before going to any sort of school or religious venue.

Whatever the dress code is, one thing you should always consider, especially if you’re dressing kids, is their comfort. Think of layers that meet the dress code but are easily added or taken off to suit the conditions. Consider also the type of fabric they are wearing. Kids are less likely to fuss and fidget if they’re wearing comfortable, soft fabrics.

Consider location and weather

When you’re planning outfits, besides the dress code, location and weather should be key considerations. Everyone will be much more comfortable if they’re dressed appropriately for the elements – for example, perhaps hats are necessary for a beach wedding.

There are also fabrics that are better suited to some weather conditions than others. For example, any fabric choice for summer or hot weather should absorb moisture and keep you cool. Cotton or linen are great choices, but most synthetics are not. In the winter, warmer fabrics such as wool or a heavier cotton weave will be more comfortable.

Consider which accessories or layers you might need for the location and weather. Strappy sandals might be an uncomfortable choice for an outdoor event that involves some walking to get there. An indoor event at a warm venue may mean you should think about light clothing.

Consider color preferences

In the case of many weddings, there may be a theme that dictates color preferences so that photographs have a uniform look. Otherwise, colors may be dictated by dress code, seasons and your own photograph preferences.

We recently wrote a piece about choosing colors that suit – if everyone in your family has different undertones, there are some colors that are “universal.” These can be a good choice for coordinating outfits while keeping everyone looking their best.

If you need some inspiration for how multiple generations pull together for event portraits, the official portraits of British royal weddings are a good example. Dress code and coordination are observed, and everyone, down to the youngest baby pulls off a chic, vintage aesthetic.

Allow sufficient time

Most people would love to pull off the perfect family photographs that the British royals seem to hit every time. However, there is a not-so-secret secret to their success – everything you see is very well planned and executed.

You can take a leaf out of their book by allowing sufficient time to plan for the outfits that you need and make any necessary purchases or alterations. If you leave it too late, you won’t be able to get key items tailored or find coordinating clothing for the kids who have had a growth spurt. 

Speaking of growth, how do you allow for that when you’re planning ahead? We recommend that you have outfits ready at least a month ahead, but have them made so that they’re easily adjustable. A visit to your tailor within a week or two of the event can have any last-minute alterations made for a perfect fit.

Remember this with shoes too. Kids seem to grow a shoe size virtually overnight, so buying a “perfect fit” too far ahead may not be a great idea. Use your best judgment – a half to one size too big, but bought weeks ahead may work out for you.

If so, not having to go into an office every day can lead to certain wardrobe habits (or freedoms – depending on how you want to look at it!). It’s easy to end up with a casual wear wardrobe when you don’t have to dress to impress every day.

However, what happens if you need to go into an office, meet with a client or represent the company at an event? For a lot of remote-based workers, this will trigger a certain amount of anxiety over what they’re going to wear.

Then there’s another potential hazard of remote work – the video meeting. You might think no one will notice your shorts if you’re dressed professionally on top, but what if you need to get up to fetch something during the meeting?

Every closet should contain a few well-made pieces that will be acceptable to wear when you need to make an impression. Here are a few tips for putting together a professional closet for the home-based professional:

Choosing the right cuts and fabrics

One thing we hear often is concern from people who want to make sure they get some longevity from their clothing. After all, if you don’t have to wear your professional pieces very often, you want to make sure that they aren’t dated or in poor condition.

A good strategy to follow is to choose clothing made from good quality fabrics and in more “timeless” cuts and patterns. That seasonal pattern in a bold color? Not a great idea if you don’t want to date your clothing when you wear it next year.

Part of the problem in recent years has been “fast, cheap fashion,” clothes that are made with a priority of quick production, rather than being built to last. If you don’t want your clothing to look worn within a short period, you need to look for better-quality construction and fabrics, and yes, you will usually pay more for them.

What makes for better quality? Here are some quick tips:

• Check the label for the fabric type. Cotton, wool, silk or linen are all extracted from plants or animals rather than man-made. There are a lot of synthetic choices out there, and some will add a certain quality when blended with the natural fabric (for example, stretch), however not all are created equally. For example, natural fibres usually improve with wear and laundering, whereas blends might stretch or shrink at different rates, altering the appearance of the garment.
• Touch the fabric. You’re looking for smooth, soft and substantial fabric rather than rough or overly thin. An exception to this is the density of the knit – a fabric can be thin and lightweight, but still have tightly-packed threads. Hold the fabric up to the light to inspect the density of the weave.
• For knits, you could try stretching the fabric just a little, in an inconspicuous spot. It should bounce back to its original shape – if it doesn’t, it won’t when you wear it either.
• Look at the seams. Stitches should be even and closely spaced, while the seam should sit flat to the fabric.
• Overall construction should be sturdy. For example, no fraying button holes. Dress shirts should have interfacing to create a stiff collar and cuffs, as should the waistband on dress pants.
• Get your clothes tailor-made, or fitted by a tailor. Professional clothes should always fit you well.

Remote wardrobe must-haves

If you’re based remotely, what you really need is a good “just in case” closet. This should consist of a few key pieces that will be appropriate for different situations, rather than a full professional wardrobe that someone who works in an office will need.

The basic remote professional wardrobe should have:

1. A good quality blazer. This can be worn with seasonally appropriate trousers and a dress shirt, with or without a tie. Look for a tailored blazer in a good-quality fabric and timeless cut. (For example, look at the cut of this Canali blazer in crease-resistant wool). Get a classic color, such as black, charcoal, grey or navy.
2. A deconstructed sport coat. What is this exactly? Deconstructed coats have no canvas layer or lining, whereas blazers with full construction have three layers. They have a softer shape and are very versatile for more “business casual” situations. Wear them with jeans and business casual accessories, or with dress trousers for more formal occasions. As an example, take a look at the casual sport coat ensemble below.

   

3. Trousers. These should be in an updated fit (nothing baggy – you’re not in an 80’s movie!). Your trousers should also be in a seasonally appropriate fabric. In temperate climates you might get away with keeping one pair, but if you have large seasonal differences, you may want two pairs – one lighter and one heavier weight.
4. At least two dress shirts. You can wear these with a tie for formal wear, or without if the situation is more business casual. These can be worn untucked with your jeans, or tucked in to formal trousers. In either case, shirts should be well-fitted and made from a crease-resistant fabric.
5. A tie – something that will go well with your shirt and trousers.
6. A nice outerwear piece. For example, you could consider a vest in the fall, or any other type of outerwear that is more appropriate for a professional setting than a weekend coat. A nice, knit sweater can also finish an outfit well – take a look at the Peru Unlimited Alpaca Wool sweater as an example.
   

How to keep your professional clothes looking good

You don’t always wear your professional clothes as a remote-based worker, so it’s important to take some steps to preserve the clothes when you aren’t wearing them.

Here are a few things you can do:

• Pay attention to the laundering tag! Many people are in the habit of throwing clothes into a regular wash cycle then tossing them in the dryer – a lot of clothes should never be put in the dryer.
• Launder washer-safe dark clothing inside out. This helps to preserve the dark shade.
• Extend the time between washes if possible. Outerwear doesn’t usually need washing after every wear, and washing is tough on clothes.
• Get suits, blazers or sport coats dry cleaned as needed.
• Brush off any particles that may be on your clothing. Hang it on a good-quality wooden hanger.
• Use a cloth cover. These allow air to circulate even if your clothing is stored.

Final thoughts

Even if you work remotely most of the time, you don’t want to be caught short when the need to be dressed professionally arises! It’s important to keep a few essential pieces that will take you from a meeting to an event.

Look for good quality cuts, construction and fabric over cheap, “fast fashion,” especially if you want to make the right impression when you do step out. Better quality clothing may cost you more, but it will also last you longer, especially if you have opted for classic styling.

Just a few key pieces in your wardrobe mean that you don’t need to worry about meetings (or those video calls!)

When you buy designer suits off the rack or purchase men’s professional attire that wasn’t custom-made to fit your frame, you might realize you’ve got some fit problems. And unfortunately, wearing an ill-fitting suit jacket can make a poor first impression.

Struggling to figure out whether your blazer actually fits or not? Try out the four tests below.

The Handshake

This one’s really the easiest of the four to test out, and it’s one you should definitely do if you’re buying men’s professional attire in a department store.

Standing in front of a mirror, put out your arm as if you’re about to shake hands. Pay attention to how the jacket feels on you as you do this. If you feel like the blazer is being pulled off you as you shake imaginary hands, the length of the jacket sleeves is off.

Most likely, the arm holes are too low. Since this would require an immense amount of tailoring (if fixing it is even possible), you should find a different fit — or invest in a made to measure suit.

The Dumbbell

Here’s another way to tell whether something is amiss with your jacket sleeves. Let your arms hang at your sides in a relaxed position. Then, curl your fingers as if you’re going to grab some dumbbells. This should make it so the sleeve of your jacket ends right at your natural wrist, with approximately half an inch of your dress shirt exposed underneath.

See too much or too little of the shirt cuff? You’re going to need a different jacket (or possibly invest in some men’s tailoring, if the issue can be fixed).

The Divot

Now we’ll move from the sleeves up to the shoulders themselves. This is one of the most important spots to look for fit because it’s nearly impossible to fix the shoulders.

The seam of a jacket’s shoulders should actually fit right on with your natural shoulder without being loose or tight. If a jacket is too tight in the shoulders, you’ll probably figure that out right away. But assessing whether it’s too big can be a bit harder.

A blazer that’s too big will develop a telltale divot in the shoulder area. An easy way to spot this is to stand so that your shoulder is facing a wall and to lean slowly towards it, as if you’re coming in close to hear it whisper something to you. Should the shoulder pad in your jacket touch the wall before your body actually does, that means there’s a divot and that the jacket’s too big for you.

The Hug

Finally, you can now figure out whether your blazer fits your torso and chest. Testing this is simple enough. Stand in front of a mirror and wrap your arms around your torso to give yourself a little hug. When you do this, you should feel comfortable. If your jacket feels tight — so much so that you’re afraid of damaging it — it’s definitely too small for you.

This really goes for other pieces of clothing as well, like dress shirts and vests. You’ll feel and look much better in men’s professional attire that actually fits you properly, rather than trying to squeeze into a size that’s too restrictive.

Now that you know how a blazer or suit jacket should fit, you can make better purchasing decisions when you’re shopping. Better yet, you can seek out assistance from a local haberdasher who can make customized professional garments just for you. By investing in some men’s professional attire that’s tailored to your body from the start, you’ll always be assured that your clothing fits you exactly the way it should.

First the Chappaqua sister called and then I reached out for the Beacon sister. We chatted about what she thought her son might need. I asked if she could guess his sizes. After a short back and forth, we decided to make an appointment for she her husband and son to come to the store on the weekend her son was visiting them.

They came Columbus Day weekend. We spent 90 minutes getting acquainted and ascertaining what he might nee d for his first job. He got suits, shirts, ties, dress slacks, a fall outerwear jacket, a vest and a quarter zip.

He also got to meet President Clinton’s valet and go to our Farmer’s Market.

His mom’s response to my thank you note, tells the whole story.
