Business casual work attire for men strikes a balance between professional and relaxed, specifically tailored to suit various workplace environments. If you’re wondering what to wear to look polished and office-appropriate without being too formal, you’re in the right place. In this guide, we’ll cover essential workwear pieces, wardrobe tips, and how to dress appropriately for different professional occasions within the business casual dress code.

Key Takeaways

  • Business casual for men mixes professional and relaxed styles, focusing on polished, well-fitted outfits that reflect company culture and personal flair.
  • Key wardrobe staples include well-fitted shirts, tailored trousers or chinos, and versatile blazers designed to elevate your look while ensuring comfort.
  • Proper grooming and attention to detail, like clean footwear and wrinkle-free clothing, are essential for maintaining a professional business casual appearance.

Business Casual Outfits for Different Workplace Environments

Different settings may require different appropriateness. Adjusting business casual looks helps meet event expectations and prepares you for professional interactions. Outfits suitable for an office may be considered inappropriate for a formal conference.

Let’s look at specific recommendations for office settings, interviews, and work events.

Office Environment

A recommended outfit formula for men’s business casual includes:

  • Navy sports coat
  • White oxford shirt
  • Tan chinos
  • Brown oxford dress shoes

In a business casual outfit, pairing brown dress shoes with a brown belt enhances overall coordination and professionalism. Observing workplace attire norms is essential to ensure a professional appearance while fitting into the office environment.

In a more relaxed office workplace environment, you might find that casual Fridays allowing employees for a bit more flexibility, like well-fitted jeans paired with a crisp button-up shirt. However, always ensure that even in a relaxed setting, you’re maintaining professionalism and not sacrificing the polished business casual look.

Interviews

Selecting business casual attire for interviews should balance professionalism with approachability to make a strong impression. Opt for subtle patterns and traditional choices like a navy suit over a crisp white shirt.

This not only shows you mean business but also that you’re approachable and ready to fit into the company’s culture.

Work Events

Outfits for work events should reflect both the event’s formality and the organization’s culture to maintain a professional image. Consider wearing a statement shirt under a solid blazer for work events or conferences in business casual attire. This touch of flair can set you apart while still adhering to a professional dress code.

Building a Business Casual Wardrobe for Work

Building a business casual wardrobe for the workplace is all about investing in versatile, timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of looks. Essential items include:

  • Well-fitted shirts
  • Tailored trousers or chinos
  • Comfortable shoes
  • A lightweight blazer or jumper

The key to a versatile put together appearance is combining different colors and styles, aiming for a perfect blend rather than a single color outfit.

Proper fit is crucial; always ensure shirts are tucked in for a polished look, as leaving them untucked can appear disheveled. Avoid overly casual options like sneakers and distressed jeans, and opt for smart dress shoes instead.

Here are the specific elements that make up a stellar business casual wardrobe.

Dress Shirts

Dress shirts are the cornerstone of any business casual wardrobe. Crisp, well-fitted button-up shirts form the foundation of a polished look. The fit of a button-up should be perfect, hugging the shoulders and tapering at the waist without being too tight or too loose. Initial colors to consider include white and light blue, which are both versatile and professional.

Solid colors and subtle patterns, such as checks or stripes, are also recommended for button ups. More professional colors for business casual attire include:

  • Navy
  • White
  • Black
  • Grey
  • Light blue
  • Lavender
  • Pink

For spring and summer, lighter colors and pastels like soft blues, stone, and sage are suitable. Incorporating patterns and colors is acceptable, but balance is key to avoid overwhelming combinations.

Polo Shirts

A well-fitted and structured polo shirt can be a great addition to your business casual wardrobe. Choose fitted polos in neutral colors like navy, grey, or black to maintain professionalism while offering comfort. Avoid bright colors and bold patterns to maintain a subtle and refined look.

For polos, premium double knit jersey fabrics are recommended. They provide a good balance of comfort and style. When wearing a belt, tucking in your polo shirt can earn you extra style points.

Pairing a polo with tailored trousers or chinos creates a relaxed yet polished look perfect for business casual settings.

Blazers and Sports Coats

Blazers and sports coats are essential for elevating outfits in business casual settings. Adding a blazer can transform a simple business casual outfit into a polished and professional look. Layering with a charcoal blazer or sports coat enhances overall style. Recommended colors for blazers in business casual settings include:

  • Beige
  • Light blue
  • Light grey
  • White
  • Coral
  • Army green.

Linen blazers are particularly recommended for meetings, offering a smart yet casual appearance. A well-fitted blazer should contour to the shoulders and taper slightly at the waist. Using a pocket square can provide a stylish contrast to a blazer, adding an element of flair.

A well-fitted blazer enhances the silhouette for big and tall men. It adds polish without adding bulk.

Chinos and Dress Pants

Chinos and khakis are widely accepted as suitable for business casual attire. Trousers, chinos, and immaculate denim qualify as acceptable pants in business casual settings. Chinos are favored for their tailored yet relaxed fit, making them ideal for business casual.

Pants should remain less formal but still tailored to fit the business casual standard. Consider the following tips:

  • Choose well-fitted khakis in neutral tones.
  • Steer clear of casual details for a polished look.
  • Suitable colors for chinos or dress slacks include navy, beige, or grey.

Avoid loose-fit pants as they tend to look too casual; seek slim or tailored fits.

Footwear

Footwear is a crucial component of men’s business casual attire. Recommended footwear includes:

  • Dress shoes
  • Loafers
  • Minimalist sneakers
  • Leather chukka boots, which are rugged yet office-appropriate
  • Leather dress shoes, a classic choice for maintaining professionalism.

Colors like medium brown and minimal white are ideal for business casual shoes. Footwear should be clean, stylish, and not sports-oriented to fit business casual standards. Avoid sneakers or sandals unless explicitly permitted by office policy. Solid color leather shoes with minimal embellishment are ideal for a polished look.

Seasonal Business Casual Work Attire

Adjusting your business casual attire with the seasons ensures comfort and style throughout the year. Seasonal adjustments are necessary to stay comfortable and stylish, whether it’s the heat of summer or the chill of winter.

Here are specific tips for spring/summer and fall/winter.

Spring/Summer

Lightweight fabrics are essential for staying cool and comfortable during the warmer months of spring and summer. Delicate fabrics such as cotton and linen are perfect for staying cool. Linen, in particular, is a lightweight and breathable fabric that keeps you cool, making it ideal for summer attire.

Choosing light colors like pastels or soft blues enhances the freshness of spring attires. Lightweight chinos or airy trousers contribute to comfort and style in warmer weather. In spring and summer, a mix of breathable fabrics and light colors helps maintain a fresh and comfortable look. Short-sleeve shirts and unlined blazers are practical choices for warmer weather.

Fall/Winter

Layering with materials like knit and flannel enhances warmth during colder months. When layering for cold weather in business casual attire, consider fit, texture, and color balance among pieces. Darker colors such as burgundy and charcoal are ideal for creating a seasonal aesthetic.

Structured outerwear like coats or jackets preserves warmth while maintaining a polished look. In colder weather, incorporating layers such as cardigans and sweaters enhances both warmth and style.

For winter, materials like wool and flannel are recommended for their insulation properties. Opting for boots and structured outerwear can keep you warm while maintaining a sophisticated appearance.

Accessorizing Men’s Business Casual Outfits

Accessories can help adjust the formality of an outfit within the business casual spectrum. They are crucial for enhancing an outfit’s overall appeal and can reflect personal style. Keeping accessories minimal, such as limiting jewelry, is recommended for a business casual look. In work events, opting for unique accessories can help you stand out while still adhering to a professional appearance.

Smart accessories enhance the look of business casual outfits without overpowering them. Let’s delve into specific accessories like watches, belts, and pocket squares.

Watches

Stylish minimal designs are recommended for wristwatches in business casual settings. Minimalist wristwatches with leather or metal straps in neutral tones are ideal choices for a business casual outfit.

A good wristwatch is essential in completing a business casual look, as it enhances both style and professionalism.

Belts

Belts should complement the color and style of shoes for a cohesive look. Whether paired with dress shoes, loafers, or even minimalist sneakers, a belt that matches your footwear can tie your entire outfit together seamlessly.

Pocket Squares

Pocket squares add a touch of personality and sophistication, enhancing the overall appearance of a blazer or sports coat. When incorporating a pocket square, consider the material, color, and pattern to ensure it complements your blazer and personal style.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Business casual is less formal than traditional office wear but remains more polished than casual styles. One of the most common mistakes is misjudging the context of an event and dressing either too formally or too casually. Henleys and t-shirts are too casual for business casual attire. Always match your outfit to the setting to maintain professionalism.

Another frequent error is wearing items that are too casual, such as shorts or loose-fit pants. It’s crucial to avoid casual backpacks, gaudy jewelry, and novelty cufflinks, which can detract from a professional look. Grooming, neat tailoring, and confidence all contribute to a polished business casual look. Remember, maintaining a professional image requires attention to detail and understanding the event’s context.

Grooming and Maintenance

Grooming enhances professionalism and shows attention to detail. Key grooming practices include regular haircuts, beard trims, clean nails, simple skincare, and subtle cologne. Wearing wrinkled clothing can appear sloppy; always ensure clothes are pressed and wrinkle-free. Keep footwear immaculately clean to maintain an overall polished appearance and polished look.

Maintain clothing and appearance by:

  • Keeping clothing clean, wrinkle-free, and well-fitted.
  • Balancing professionalism in business casual attire to convey professionalism while allowing personal expression.
  • Ensuring a well-groomed appearance to complement your attire and complete your polished look.

Summary

Mastering business casual work attire for men involves understanding the balance between professionalism and comfort. From building a versatile wardrobe with essential pieces like dress shirts, chinos, and blazers to adjusting your attire seasonally and accessorizing thoughtfully, each element plays a crucial role. Avoid common mistakes by paying attention to grooming and maintaining a polished appearance. By following these guidelines, you’ll confidently navigate any business casual setting, making a lasting impression with your style and professionalism.

Spring is a tricky season when it comes to dressing. You never know if you’ll need a jacket, a sweater, or a T-shirt. The weather can change from chilly to hot in a matter of hours, and you don’t want to be caught off guard. Layering is the key to staying comfortable and stylish in spring.

Layering allows you to adjust your outfit according to the temperature and the occasion. Add or remove layers as needed, and mix and match different pieces to create versatile looks. Here are seven essential layers sure to keep you comfortable and stylish all day long:

1. Lightweight Jackets

A lightweight sports jacket is a must-have for spring. It helps protect you from the wind, rain, and cool air while adding flair to your outfit. The key is to choose one that fits well, suits your style, and matches your other clothes.

If you’re looking for something more versatile, a Peter Millar lightweight jacket is a great option. You can wear it over a shirt, a sweater, or a hoodie. Or layer it under a heavier coat if the weather gets cold. Also, choose a jacket made of breathable cotton or linen fabric that will keep you cool on hot spring afternoons.

2. Dress Shirts

The best men’s dress shirt is an excellent choice if you’re heading to the office. It adds polish and sophistication to your outfit while keeping you comfortable and breathable. Wear it independently with jeans or chinos for a simple and sharp look. Or under Lubiam soft constructed sport coats, a sweater, or a jacket for extra style, comfort, and warmth. Roll up the sleeves or unbutton the collar for a more casual and relaxed feel.

In addition, choose a solid, striped, checked, or patterned button-down dress shirt, depending on your mood and style. Look for a lightweight cotton or linen shirt that will keep you cool during the day. A light blue or white shirt is always a safe bet, but don’t be afraid to try a fun pattern or color.

3. Sweaters

A pull-over crewneck or cardigan sweater keeps you warm and cozy on chilly spring mornings. It’s a classic yet versatile garment that adds color and texture to your look, and you can wear it in many ways. Wear it over a neatly tucked-in button-down shirt for a bright, casual look or over a T-shirt for a more relaxed vibe.

Moreover, wear it under a jacket or a knit blazer for extra warmth and style. Opt for a lightweight crewneck sweater that will keep you cool during the day. A crewneck sweater made of wool, cotton, or cashmere with a neutral color such as navy or gray can be an excellent option. Choose one that fits well and complements your outfit and skin tone.

4. T-Shirts

A layering t-shirt offers endless opportunities for your style and appearance on cool mornings and sunny afternoons during spring. Pair it with a short or a trouser for a casual, easy look on warmer afternoons. Or wear it under a vest, shirt, Peter Miller spring sweater, or jacket for extra coverage, contrast, and comfort.

Look for a t-shirt made from a breathable material such as cotton or a cotton-linen blend. Such a piece provides a solid base for your outfit while keeping you cool and comfortable, regardless of how you wear it. Also, choose a plain, graphic, or logoed t-shirt that suits your personality and taste, and ensure it fits well and flatters your body shape.

5. Hoodies

A quality hoodie is a great layering option for spring, as it offers excellent warmth and comfort. It adds some edge and attitude to your outfit. You can wear it over a T-shirt or under a jacket for a sporty, relaxed look, or pair it with joggers or jeans for a cozy and laid-back vibe.

Look for a hoodie you can zip up, pull over, or unbutton, depending on your preference and convenience. Choose a soft, lightweight, durable, and fitting hoodie to keep you comfortable in style. As for color, start with a basic t-shirt as your base layer. Then add a lightweight hoodie in gray, black, or navy black for a casual look.

The post 6 Ways to Dress to Impress for a Virtual Job Interview appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
Virtual job interviews have become the norm due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you have a virtual job interview coming up, you need to prepare. You should start by ensuring your internet connection is reliable and the laptop webcam is functioning correctly. Most importantly, you should choose the right outfit for the interview.

Note that a dressing code of choice should impress the same as you would in an in-person interview. With the rise of business casual and professional outfits, choosing the right outfit for a video job interview can be challenging. Read on to learn six ways to dress for a virtual job interview.

Choose Your Shirt Wisely for a Virtual Job Interview

Your top half will be seen on the screen by the interviewer. You should wear high quality and a classic button-down shirt for men or a blouse for ladies. The color of the shirt or blouse will always make an impression. It is advisable to consider white, light gray, or light blue. However, ensure that the color you choose does not match your background.

For instance, you can choose to wear a blue Plaid Dress shirt or a white Classic Cotton Twill Dress Shirt, to give you a business casual and professional look, respectively. If you are a stylish woman, you can consider a white or any light-colored blouse. With the right shirt or blouse, you can never go wrong trying to impress your potential employers.

Wear a Blazer With Shirt, Not a T-shirt

You could look good in a blazer with a t-shirt, but it is not recommended for a virtual job interview. However, pairing a button-down shirt with a blazer can give the best professional appearance, which makes you feel more confident. You can choose to wear an Italian Classic Tweed Coat, Canali Three-Button Knit Soft Coat, or Knit Blazer, but ensure it blends well with the shirt.

A simple navy blue blazer over your dress or blouse will always be perfect for ladies. A cardigan can also make you look professional and prepared for the video job interview.

A Suit Will Do the Trick for a Virtual Job Interview

A nice suit will make you look great and feel more confident for the interview. It will earn you respect from the interviewing panel, which may increase your chances of getting hired. Consider a well-fitting suit which you should pair with a shirt and a tie.

Suits are available in different colors, and a navy suit would be perfect for a video job interview. You can pair it with a white shirt and striped or solid-colored ties. You may opt not to wear a tie, but still, appear good for the interview.

Women have different suits to choose from. A black skirt or trouser suit paired with a white blouse is a good option. You can also choose any other color that is not too bright to distract the interviewers.

Pay Attention to What You Wear From Waist Down

You can focus too much on what you wear on the upper body and forget from the waist down. It is a common mistake you should avoid. Yes, the upper body will be on camera, but some interviewers may want to see how you are dressed from the waist down.

Wearing sweats, yoga pants, or shorts can dent your image. Wear a pair of trousers or skirt that complements the outfit on the upper body. Don’t forget to wear the right shoes, like black or brown closed-toe flats for men, and low heels, flats, pumps, or wedges for women.

Keep It Simple When It Comes to Accessories

Don’t over-accessorize your outfit when preparing for a Zoom job interview. You should keep it simple. Men should consider wearing a wristwatch or a bracelet that is not too distracting. Don’t forget to wear a leather belt and socks for a complete official look. Women can wear a thin gold-linked necklace, one to two rings, and smaller classic earrings for a professional look.

Dress to Fit in the Company Culture

If you don’t know what will impress the potential employer, you should visit their website and social media platforms to have a sneak-in preview of what is the common dress code in the pictures. The pictures should give you ideas of what you should wear for the job interview video.

It is important to note that you don’t have to look official for some job interviews. For instance, if you are preparing for a creative job interview, a casual outfit is a good option. You can choose to wear a t-shirt with a blazer and khaki pants. Women can choose to wear a collared shirt with a pencil skirt or pants.

Dress to Impress at Your Next Virtual Job Interview

Dressing appropriately for a virtual job interview via zoom or any other video conferencing program should impress the interviewers. It also increases your chances of getting hired. At Family Britches, we offer a wide range of high-quality outfits like suits, blazers, blouses, trousers, shirts, dresses, skirts, and accessories you can wear for a job interview video. Visit our stores or browse through our product page to view and purchase quality outfits that will impress your potential employers. You can also contact us now for more information.

The post Top 5 Stylish Ways to Wear a Quilted Vest in the Office and at Home appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
A quilted vest is among the most practical pieces of apparel in your closet to wear in the fall, spring, and winter. It complements practically any casual attire well. Sometimes you may feel a little chilly, and it will provide just enough warmth to keep you comfortable.

Unless it is freezing outside, refrain from heavy layering. Instead of donning a heavy coat, layer a quilted vest on a sweater or shirt. Here are some of the best ways to style your quilted vest whether you are going to the office or are at home.

Why a Quilted Vest?

The quilted vest is becoming more and more essential in today’s less formal setting. It has even replaced the sport coat or suit jacket in several workplaces. Its front pockets make it simple to carry smartphones and warm hands, and its zipper attachment makes it adjustable for fitting.

The quilted vest’s insulation capabilities make it a helpful additional layer for the coldest winter days. With its low density, you can wear it as outerwear throughout the early spring, fall, and other transitional months. Because of its wide range of applications, the quilted vest blends with your professional and casual attire.

How to Wear a Quilted Vest With Style

The following are some of our best ways to wear a quilted vest:

On Top of a Shirt

This style is only appropriate within a brief window, typically just before the fall dawn, when temperatures are still moderate. It lasts for a short while before the cold sets in. You may try a bunch with various designs and color combinations.

You do not always have to wear your quilted vest over a solid color shirt. Striped shirts look great with quilted vests, especially white shirts with black or navy blue striping. It also looks just as good layered over a dress shirt and slacks. As a casual sport coat substitute, start with a crisp collar shirt and a pair of chinos to establish a formal-casual look.

Between a Dress Shirt and a Blazer

You can have a quilted vest between the dress shirt and suit jacket to provide a little insulating layer. This applies even when the weather is chilly to warrant an additional layer, or warm enough for a suit without a blazer. As the third layer in three-layer attire, unstructured blazers look fantastic. This style perfectly suits whatever occasion you can shed the top layer, including church and family dinners.

Over a Quarter-Zip

This style makes a perfect smart-casual ensemble. Most quarter-zips are thin and provide a good fit, which makes them look incredible beneath a quilted vest. Maintain a firm quarter-zip, and have fun with the shirt below. Three consecutive solids aren’t usually sufficient. Thus, consider a patterned shirt where only the collars will be visible and serve as a highlight to the entire ensemble.

Under a Shacket or a Heavy Coat

This outfit is unquestionably more winter-appropriate. The vest breaks up the weight, tone, and fabric of your clothing while adding aesthetic appeal. Choose a different vest shade from that of your go-to winter coat.

A shacket is a shirt-jacket; sometimes called a work shirt and chore coat. With your quilted vest under it, you can transform the vest into a rugged gem. Although it leans more casually, this is a perfect way to give your manly look a touch of refinement.

With a Tie

Quilted vests go well with professional attire. Pair your quilted vest with an Oxford shirt, a modern slim-fit shirt, and a tie when you want to stay toasty on the work commute without sacrificing formality. If you are wearing a solid-colored shirt, go for a patterned tie to shake up the monotony and direct attention from the body to the head.

Consider a zip-up vest. It lets you decide how much of your tie to reveal, and you won’t have to stress over the perfect tie length. Shine up with fashionable men’s apparel, like knitted monochrome gloves.

Do you take business trips or travel for work?

If so, it’s probably important to you to be able to wear professional clothing and keep your wardrobe looking good while you travel. Impressions matter when you attend work meetings, and no one wants to arrive looking bedraggled!

This isn’t always an easy thing to achieve. While in the golden age of aviation, flying somewhere meant something and was heralded by well-dressed passengers with plenty of legroom, the modern era is far removed.

If you’re fortunate enough to travel business class, you still get a little room to spread out, but if you’re flying economy, you tend to be packed in like farm animals on a stock truck. Cramped conditions can mean havoc for your professional clothing as shirts get wrinkled and blazers get crammed into overhead lockers.

You start to worry about any meetings that are scheduled shortly after landing, so what can you do to stay looking fresh?

Invest in quality luggage

First of all, it is well worth investing in the right luggage to carry your wardrobe! Good luggage keeps you looking stylish and protects your clothing.

If you’re going for more than a couple of nights, a sturdy wheeled-case, made of lightweight, durable material is a must. Think aluminum, polycarbonate or leather. If the duration of your trip is a couple of nights or less, consider a casually stylish holdall.

Professional clothingThe right luggage is one thing, but how you pack it is also very important. Wrinkles are caused by friction among your belongings, so one suggestion is to pack clothes in plastic garment bags, or even among dry cleaning bags. The plastic reduces friction. Stuffing your clothing with tissue paper first keeps it from flattening out and helps it to maintain its shape. Consider using packing cubes to stow your small items and toiletries.

There are many travel sites which suggest rolling clothes in order to save room and to avoid wrinkling your garments. However, we do not suggest you roll your tailored shirts or good trousers. Rolling still leads to wrinkles in the clothing and if you look closely at that advice, it’s often accompanied by pictures of t-shirts or other more wrinkle-resistant clothes.

One suggestion to avoid rumpled clothing is “bundle packing.” This is definitely a better idea than rolling clothes, especially if you’ve got a few items you need to pack. Bundle packing involves wrapping your clothing around a bundle of wrinkle-resistant clothes, with your most delicate items being on the outside of the bundle. So, your suit jacket or tailored shirts would be on the outside.

It’s not a perfect system, but it can work to at least keep your most wrinkle-prone pieces in good condition. This is because those items on the outside have less pronounced folds in the making of the bundle. The video below from NBC News gives a demonstration of bundle packing:

Plan your travel outfit

No matter how conscientious you are about packing, you’ll still almost certainly arrive with some clothing in need of an iron. Of course, if you’re dashing from the airport straight to a meeting, you don’t have time for this!

One strategy is to carefully plan your travel outfit ahead of time. Choose crease-resistant clothing where possible to wear on the plane. This means choosing high-quality fabrics such as wool, jersey, cashmere or knits. Wearing your blazer helps to save it from getting wrinkled in your luggage or the overhead locker.

Professional clothing

Canali suit, made with wrinkle-resistant wool.

Consider your footwear as well. Shoes take up valuable room in your bag when space may already be at a premium. They also have to be taken off and put back on again quickly at airport security.

With this in mind, something like a high-quality pair of loafers can be a good choice to wear as you travel. They slip on and off easily, look stylish and can be dressed up when worn with your suit for work meetings, and dressed down with chinos or good jeans for evening drinks.

Choose crease-resistant shirts

Creased shirts are a common nuisance for business travelers. Even following packing techniques to avoid wrinkling clothing it’s difficult to keep shirts looking their best out of a suitcase.

Choosing crease-resistant shirts can be well worth the investment. “Resistant” means that, if you follow packing techniques to minimize folding and creasing, the shirt should still look very presentable.

Professional clothing

The Eton dress shirt is made from 100% premium cotton and is crease-resistant.

You can’t always prevent your shirts from getting creased during travel, but you can take steps to ensure you’ll be able to get them looking their best at your destination. Try to book a hotel room that caters to business travelers, including having an iron available. If you don’t have an iron available, try hanging creased clothing in the bathroom while you shower. The steam can work to smooth out any creases.

Be a minimalist

You need to consider the weather at your destination and any functions you will be attending when you pack. However, it is better to be a minimalist when it comes to the number of items you pack.

Overstuffed suitcases lead to creased clothing, so it’s a good idea to prioritize classic, and versatile pieces. Look for items that you can mix and match to create different looks, whether you’re meeting with clients or headed to an informal gathering.

For example, your crease-resistant dress shirt can be paired with chinos or a dark pair of jeans for an after-work event, or, wear your blazer with a plain t-shirt or polo shirt, paired with jeans. Another suggestion is to pack your clothes in three coordinating colors, allowing you that mix and match flexibility. You really don’t need to pack a lot of pieces, as long as you focus on bringing the right ones.

Carry “emergency” items

It can be irritating and downright stressful to realize you’ve got a wardrobe issue while you’re away on business. Missing buttons, loose threads or unraveling seams can put a blight on your day.

You can pack your own emergency sewing kit so that you’re prepared if a malfunction happens. Simply put rolls of black, white and grey thread, a sewing needle, a few buttons and a handful of safety pins into a small box or tin. In a pinch, a safety pin can take care of a loose seam or hem, while it only takes a couple of minutes to sew on a replacement button.

Another thing to consider including is stain removal wipes (such as Shout Wipe and Go). Let’s say you were holding a cup of coffee when your aircraft hit a spot of turbulence – you want to be able to remove the evidence as quickly as possible! Stained clothing creates just as bad an impression as creased clothing, so these are useful to keep around even while you’re not traveling.

Don’t live out of a suitcase

As a final piece of advice for travelers, the less time your clothing spends bundled into a suitcase, the better if it is to remain looking good. A top tip is to unpack as soon as you reach your hotel room and hang all clothing up. The longer it sits, the more likely it is to crease.

If looking your best while traveling is a priority for you, this is possible to achieve with a few smart packing and grooming choices. Look for items that are versatile and well-made, and pack to reduce creasing. Consider the seasons and look to mix and match items as much as possible. A minimalist suitcase means fewer items squashed together, helping your wardrobe to stay looking good.

The business casual look is a careful balance between formal business attire and a comfortable, laid-back approach to office clothes. You want clothes that are comfortable but still provide complimentary professional lines. The exact details of the business casual code vary from one workplace to the next. You might even be somewhere that permits jeans, or enjoys stylish jeans on Casual Fridays.

Even though dress codes are put in place to simplify the dressing choices for specific events or activities, they can sometimes be vague. Take business casual, for example, which brings us to the question, “Are jeans business casual?”

Jeans have evolved from the old days, with quality styles and fits becoming appropriate for almost any business casual event and social evenings. How you style them can determine whether your outfit suits a business casual dress code.

How do you know which jeans are good for your business casual wardrobe and how to combine them?Allow Family Britches to show you options and ways to coordinate your jeans for your wardrobe needs. Stick to the following rules to pull off a business casual outfit with jeans:

Rule # 1: No Holes, Distressing, or Patches

First impressions matter a lot when putting together a business casual outfit. The best way to think of business casual jeans is as denim slacks, and not rocker jeans. The idea here is to maintain a professional look while taking a break from your day-to-day suit-and-tie or formal look. Avoid any damaged integrity of the jean fabric, just like you wouldn’t wear suit pants with a ripped knee. Avoid any pair of jeans with a kneehole or even stylish distressing – even if done by top clothing designer brands. Patches, which go in and out of style, are also not appropriate for business casual Friday or that casual business retreat weekend.

Rule #2: Solid Color Without Fade or Too Much Acid-Wash in a Business Casual Look

Should you wear faded or acid-washed jeans if the fabric is intact? In general, that answer is no. Unless you are working at a trendy startup with a rocker vibe, keep your jeans one solid color. They can be pale jeans, dark jeans, black, gray, or even colorful jeans. But choose one, well-dyed solid color.

Rich blue jeans can look extremely classy in the right ensemble. Light acid washing can look good, but use your judgment on acid wash style.

Dark jeans are perfect for this purpose since they offer endless styling options. You can pair them with most blazers or your favorite dress shirt in your wardrobe. If you are going for a dark-colored pair of jeans, combine it with a neutral or dark blazer. Doing this will help add contrast to your business casual outfit.

Rule #3: Quality Style and Fabric – Know Your Manufacturers

With a rise in poor-quality jeans in the market, shopping for business casual jeans can take time and effort. If you don’t get it right, you may end up with a cheap-looking outfit that can’t bring out your stunning professional side.

Know your jeans manufacturers. The quality of your fabric and the style of the jeans cut will define how business-casual your final look will be. Stick to manufacturers who are known for making very high-quality jeans that are up to the standards of your business casual office expectations of the dress. After all, casual Friday is really a chance to show off your slightly less somber attire, not an invitation to wear your weekend gardening gear.Manufacturers that make business casual jeans are Teleria from Italy, PT from Italy, and Alberto from Germany. Explore these and other brands. Find a brand with the right cut for your body and fabric that looks excellent next to a blazer.

Rule #4: Go Classy With Your Shirt and Jacket

Speaking of blazers, your choice of shirt truly matters when wearing jeans in a business casual outfit. In order to make sure your jeans are formal enough, you will want to lean toward formal and classy with your choice of shirt and jacket.

A crisp dress shirt is always a good choice when paired with jeans, add a sporty button-up shirt can add a dash of personality to a more casual business office. Depending on the office, you can tuck in your dress shirt or leave it loose for a devil-may-care.

A simple button-down collared shirt under the blazer can also give your outfit a ‘dressier’ look. A T-shirt can also replace a button-down shirt for a more relaxed feel.

  • In the summer, polos and knit shirts can be used to show how comfortable you are in more casual attire.
  • In the winter, a crisp dress shirt collar peeking over a formal knit sweater can be a very dashing urban look.
  • For outdoor activities, a vest can strike the perfect balance between action and business.

If you need to take it a step up while wearing jeans, add a blazer or suit jacket to make it clear that you may be casual, but you mean business. For a feminine but polished look, you can go with the classic blazer, blouse, and denim combo. It is easy to pull off since all three items are wardrobe essentials. Add sneakers or heels, depending on the occasion, to spice up the look.

Rule #5: Use Accessories to Upscale the Ensemble

Don’t forget the accessories. Your choice of belt, wallet chain, and other little accessories can perfectly upscale your ensemble when wearing jeans.

Choose a belt with subtle detail and a modest yet elegant buckle. The belt is a great opportunity to add a touch of formality to your casual jeans style.

Other formal accessories to add to your outfit include watches and necklaces in metallic or dark colors to balance the casual jeans. Men’s clothing accessories can be tricky – but briefcases, handbags, ties, belts, and leather shoes are also good options.

Rule #6: You Can Get Jeans Fitted for the Best Business Casual Look

Finally, did you know that you can get your jeans fitted? Custom-fitted pants are a staple of business attire. You need the pant to fall just right to provide the right lines of the ensemble and personal all-day comfort. You don’t have to find beautiful quality jeans that also fit perfectly off-the-rack. You can absolutely have the right business casual jeans fitted to you to make them perfect for your wardrobe and future casual Fridays. Here are some tips when having your jeans fitted:

  • Your business casual jeans should be comfortable enough to allow you to move around. Ensure that they are also relaxed when you are sitting down or standing up.
  • The denim should be moderately thick and stretchable to allow for these movements.
  • Ensure you wear the right size of jeans, and then tuck in your top. A straight-leg pair of jeans will do. Also, avoid skinny jeans since they are geared more toward casual settings.

Integrate Jeans With the Business Casual Look

If you are looking for the perfect fit and selection of business-casual-worthy jeans, you can find them at Family Britches. We not only have access to jeans manufacturers in Italy and Germany for the highest quality office jeans, we will also custom fit each pair to your exact measurements for cut and look you need to look your best at work on Casual Fridays. COVID-19 fueled the need for comfortable, fashionable yet professional men’s wear. Working from home is no excuse for being frumpy or unfashionable. Business casual clothes help you look professional and relaxed without having to try so hard. As the world becomes less formal, it’s crucial to have a versatile, minimalist wardrobe that fits all occasions. Here, we bring you the top 11 menswear trends for fall 2021.

Top Menswear Trends for Fall 2021

1. Textured or Non-Plain Button-Down Shirts

For this, we recommend the Caiden sport shirt, an all-cotton button-down collar sports shirt with tweener buttons.

2. Dress Shirts

Look for dress shirts from manufacturers like David Donahue and Hagen. They design their shirts to be worn with sport coats, suits, and fashionable business casual menswear.

3. Sweaters

We have a striped crew sweater, which is best worn with collared shirts. It’s all wool, and its neutral stripes make sure it can go with anything.

You can also get the Slub striped cotton crew neck sweater. It’s made in Italy and with its signature smart casual weave, you’re bound to make a lasting statement this fall.

Holebrook has a line of sweaters/outerwear from Sweden. Kinross Cashmere, Peter Millar, Stenstroms, Codice, and Gran Sasso will keep you warm and appropriately dressed for business or pleasure.

4. Vests

These days, vests are the new sports coats and have made a name for themselves in the realm of fashionable accessories. You can get some amazing statement pieces from Peter Millar, Waterville, Stenstroms, and Patrick Assaraf.

5. Custom Fit Clothes

Made-to-measure clothing is important to give you the best fit. It allows you to get the most comfortable clothing with the best fabrics that are custom-fit for you. Visiting a qualified designer gives you unlimited possibilities and you only need one visit for all your needs. Get yourself some custom-made blazers, dress shirts, and slacks to give you a comfortable, relaxed wardrobe that fits your style. You can never go wrong with custom-fit clothes in your wardrobe.

6. Dark-Colored Jeans

You can hardly go wrong with dark colors. Dark-colored stretchy jeans will keep you warm and comfortable this fall, and they’re appropriate for the office. These versatile jeans pair well with loafers.

7. Colored Socks

Socks are a must-have in your wardrobe, especially if you have dress shoes. You need some neutral-colored, cotton-blend socks to keep your feet comfortable. You can also choose wool instead of cotton blends for extra warmth and to have that all-around business casual look this fall.

8. Loafers

A good pair of loafers is one of the first steps to a smart-casual wardrobe. Loafers help round up your business casual look, especially with a pair of dress slacks, dark-colored jeans, dress shirts, and a sweater or sports coat.

9. Dress Slacks or Chinos

Casual slacks are a must-have in your wardrobe. They are versatile, convenient, and comfortable. Get yourself some casual pants by Brax, Meyer, and Ballin. Each brings in different fabrics and silhouettes, giving you that relaxed, put-together look. They are comfortable and a great fit.

10. Leather Belts

When it comes to belts, quality trumps price hands down. You’ll need the Plain to Moc Grain, a bison fine leather belt with a silver buckle. They also come with a gold buckle option, if you’re feeling extra fancy this fall. This specific belt is made in the USA.

11. Athletic Wear

You can get an amazing activewear line by Vuori, Faherty, and Patrick Assaraf. They design comfortable, washable, and eco-friendly clothing, suitable for your work from home program. While not many offices recommend the gym meets office kind of clothing, it certainly won’t hurt to have some in your closet, since most employers are slowly realizing the vanity behind judging an employee by their wardrobe.

In many cases, men’s athleisure that’s appropriate for work is clothing made from neutral-colored stretch fabric, like knit henley shirts, plain v-neck tees, woven or knit pants, seamless polo shirts, knit bomber jackets, and wool sneakers. One example in our catalog is the ultimate Tecno pants, designed for unlimited mobility and comfort. It has anti-crease properties and has full shape retention. It’s also appropriate for any occasion.

The point of this fashion choice is to feel comfortable, fashion-forward, neat, and focused. Layering is necessary this fall to avoid getting too sweaty or chilly.

The post Maintaining Business Casual Professionalism During the Hottest Days of Summer appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
The easy days of summer are here. Unfortunately, this can mean oppressive heat, high levels of humidity, and the sun’s relentless rays beating down on you during your work day. Dressing professionally during the summer can be a labyrinth of choices that leave you feeling underdressed or overdressed for practically every occasion. If the contradictory term “business casual” makes you wonder how to dress for work and survive the summer heat, help is coming. Learn what fabrics and styles from your summer wardrobe help you beat the heat and maintain your professional appearance.

Wearing Summer Layers

Layers can add professionalism to any attire and help you navigate the changing temperatures from steamy parking lots to air-conditioned offices or restaurants with ease. Yet, the wrong fabrics and styles can trap heat, making you sweaty and uncomfortable no matter where you are. Successful summer layering is about the right fabrics and colors to ward off heat and enable cooling.

When choosing layers, begin with breathable natural fabrics in light colors. Linen, bamboo, and lightweight cotton are ideal for summer. Opt for pieces that are unlined or half-lined to avoid trapping heat. You can get away with a looser fit than with winter layers since these materials eliminate bulk. However, it’s essential that clothing maintains a tailored look instead of appearing baggy or ill-fitting. For example, ensure pants fit properly at your waist and hips and avoid shirts that balloon out with extra fabric.

How to Wear Polos and T-Shirts

Trading your crisp button-up shirts for knits can be confusing. Yet, the right approach can keep you cool while maintaining your professional appearance. If your workplace doesn’t have an overly strict dress code, polo shirts (and sometimes t-shirts) are a great balance between comfort and professionalism. Choose polos in neutral colors that are well-fitted and have a neat collar. If t-shirts are an option, take a similar approach, choosing smooth fabrics, no graphics, and neutral colors that will provide an understated appearance.

Pair these more casual shirts with dressier items for a pulled-together appearance. This can include lightweight dress pants or dress jeans or trousers, a sports coat, and a belt. Tucked polo shirts lend a neater appearance, and loafers instead of sneakers can elevate the overall look.

Summer Business Colors

For many men, the go-to professional attire is black, charcoal, or navy. Yet, these dark colors are certain to absorb the sun’s rays, making you feel hotter the moment you step outside. Lighter colors reflect light, making them naturally cooler. When choosing light colors, search for shades that maintain your professional appearance and will be easy to mix and match. Summer neutrals typically include white, grey, olive, light blue, cream, tan, and beige.

Walking the Line Between Business Casual and Casual Fridays

When you’re accustomed to wearing suits and ties, summer wardrobe staples can leave you feeling underdressed. The secret to avoiding the casual Friday look on Monday morning is in the details. While t-shirts and polos may be an option, they’re not the same ones you wear on the weekends for a trip to the beach or a morning at the golf course. Choose fitted garments that look smooth and tailored. Avoid overly bright colors, logos, and graphics. Chinos are a widely accepted option for many office settings, but styles vary widely. Seek lightweight cotton or wool pants with minimal details. A straight cut, few visible pockets, and unobtrusive stitching details offer a professional look in any color.

Accessories can go a long way toward dressing up casual garments. Wear a belt and leather shoes with a tucked shirt to dress up casual pants. Similarly, a lightweight linen blazer atop a casual cotton shirt adds a layer of polish.

Keeping Single-Layer Ensembles Professional

While you can wear layers in summer, single-layer ensembles are an acceptable way to beat the summer heat. Choosing dressier garments can help you achieve the same polish as layered looks. A crisp long-sleeved button-front shirt pairs nicely with chinos or lightweight dress trousers for a professional appearance. Sleeves can be rolled to the elbow to keep cool outdoors. Your favorite polo can be an option here, too. When opting for casual separates, consider a singular color palate to keep the look subdued. Accessories like belts and shoes go a long way here, too, elevating a casual look to business wear.

Update Your Summer Wardrobe at Family Britches

As the winter chill slowly melts away, it’s a perfect time to spruce up your wardrobe for the new season. While it’s not quite warm enough to bring out loose shorts and sleeveless T-shirts, your winter wardrobe could be too warm for the changing weather. Incorporating a few lightweight and brightly colored accessories into your spring wardrobe is an invaluable way to refresh your style while injecting life into your closet. Welcome spring in style with our inspirations. But first, let’s look at the importance of accessorizing.

Benefits of Accessorizing Your Spring Wardrobe

Besides enhancing your look, accessorizing your spring wardrobe can offer a range of benefits.

  • Allows you to showcase your unique style and personality, making you stand out
  • Completes your look while adding interest and creating a cohesive ensemble
  • Easy to experiment with different styles and create multiple looks with the same accessories, which is cost-saving
  • A great way to refresh your wardrobe and keep up with the latest trends
  • Boosts your confidence and makes you feel good about yourself

Colorful, Lightweight Vests

Spring is the perfect season to experiment with brighter prints and colors. Swap out your dark winter vests with vibrant hues like sky blue, mint green, or coral to add a fresh touch to your outfit. A colorful vest adds visual interest to your outfit while keeping you warm on cooler spring days.

Choose lightweight fabrics like linen and hemp blends, ideal for layering with your favorite spring shirts or tops. For a casual yet stylish look, wear a colored vest over a white shirt and pair it with chinos or jeans. If you want a more formal ensemble, layer it over a dress shirt and pair it with tailored trousers.

Bright, Lightweight Sweaters

Put away the beautiful, cozy fleece, flannel, and cashmere sweaters, and look for smoother textured fabrics. Lightweight knits are great for layering over shirts or dresses, adding warmth without bulk. To add a vibrant touch to your wardrobe, look for cheerful colors like lavender, peach, or lemon yellow. You can pair them with jeans and sneakers for a casual weekend look or wear them with an official pair of trousers for a more polished ensemble.

Bold Shirts

Shirts are an easy way to add interest to your spring wardrobe and you can choose bold prints to make a statement. Floral prints are the most popular choice for spring, but you shouldn’t be afraid to try something new. Polka dotsbright stripes, and gingham are also great options for adding a vibrant touch to your outfit. Pair with neutral bottoms like khakis or navy trousers for a balanced look. Go for lightweight fabrics like silk and cotton to remain comfortable all day long.

Lightweight Blazers

A lightweight blazer is a must-have spring jacket and a perfect way to stay stylish and comfortable in the changing weather. For a chilly spring day, you can layer it with a knit and pair it with an official pair of trousers or jeans. A thinner cashmere knit works best as it’s not bulk on your sleeves or shoulders.

In a warmer day, pair your blazer with a crisp white t-shirt and dark jeans. If you want a more relaxed look, you can roll up the sleeves of the blazer. You can also opt for blazers with lightweight and breathable fabrics such as linen and cotton. Choose versatile colors like soft blues or light greys that can be easily paired with other spring wardrobe staples.

Add More Accessories!

Besides lightweight sweaters, vests, shirts, and blazers, adding more accessories such as necklaces and bracelets is key to completing your spring look. Consider wearing bold bracelets, or statement necklaces and belts to add a pop of color to a simple outfit.

You can add a lightweight scarf in a complementary pattern or color for a touch of elegance. Don’t forget to choose footwear that complements your spring outfit, like canvas sneakers or loafers in bright or neutral tones. Ankle boots are also the perfect option for the transition period.

The Bottom Line

Accessorizing your existing spring wardrobe with colorful vests, bright sweaters, bold shirts, and lightweight blazers is an easy and effective way to transition from winter to spring. These simple accents can add a fresh and vibrant touch to your wardrobe, helping you embrace the new season in style.

At Family Britches, we have a decent collection of spring outfits and accessories to help you stay stylish and comfortable in the changing weather. Sweaters are an invaluable wardrobe staple that comes in handy when the temperatures drop. Just like the other garments, they are classified into various types meant for different styles and looks. In this style guide, you will learn the difference between smart, casual, and business sweaters.

Business Sweater Styles

Anything you wear to work or formal meetings should be simple. Vivid patterns and bright colors belong to the ski slopes and not offices. You also want to avoid bulky weaves and go for thin pieces. Here are the best sweaters for business occasions.

Quarter-Zip Sweaters

Quarter-zip sweaters are among the most popular business wear for men. They come in cashmere, merino wools, patterns, and lighter-weight cotton. For an office-appropriate look, you can wear a quarter zip sweater with a bottom-down sports shirt or under a jacket. The pieces are fashionable, comfortable, and easy to style, making them a great go-to option in low temperatures.

V-Neck Sweaters

A V-neck sweater with a solid color is perfect when worn with a necktie. It makes a great transitional wardrobe piece when you do not want to leave the house without an extra layer. V-neck sweaters are mostly made of cashmere or merino wool and sometimes cotton for warmer weather.

When purchasing a V-neck sweater, be sure it fits well. It should hug your arms and torsos lightly without being too tight. You can layer it with a bright dress shirt and layer with a good coat.

Crew-Neck Sweaters

Also known as the basic wool pullovers, crew-neck sweaters have round, symmetrical necklines that are right against your neck. The knot of a necktie may show over a crew-neck sweater, but the tie and shirt color can look a bit constricted. We, therefore, recommend wearing them with open dress shirts or with thin turtlenecks.

Casual Sweater Styles

Casual sweaters are meant for informal occasions. Unless you are in a very relaxed working environment, you will want to avoid them in any professional setting.

Cardigans

You might be surprised to see this one here, but cardigans are casual sweaters. Although they look good when paired with dress shirts or dress slacks, they are not meant for professional settings. In case you are wondering, cardigans are sweaters that open completely in the front. Most of them are made of fine wool like cashmere.

The reason why cardigans are casual pieces lies in their construction. Any sweater that zips or buttons up is not formal. Usually, the visual clutter of the opening is slightly off workwear.

Ombre Crew Sweaters

Ombre sweaters are perfect casual pieces. They are often knit with decorative colors that result in an ombre finish. These types can be worn with chinos or denim. You can reserve them for casual Fridays in a laid-back workplace environment.

Sweater Vests

If you have a nice dress shirt, you can show it off with a sweater vest, especially in warm weather. A lightly patterned or solid-colored sweater vest brings a unique and eye-catching look than a basic V-neck or crew-neck pullover.

Sweater vests come in V-necks, making them standard for an office appearance. You can choose to rock them with a tie or without it. Adventurous men layer them with coats, but you should be careful with your choice of colors. You will require restrained colors to pull off that look.

Smart Sweater Styles

Smart clothing lies between casual and business wear. Here are the sweaters that you can rock to achieve the best look.

Argyll V-Neck Sweaters

Wearing an argyll sweater is a great way of adding color to an ensemble. They offer a nice sporty alternative to a plain sweater. While most people wear them casually, they fall under the smart wear category.

When wearing these sweaters, you want to be careful with colors. Ensure that there is color coordination, especially with the patterned argyll sweaters. If you are not careful, argyle can get loud, so sticking to solid colors is important.

Heavier Knit Sweaters

For the most part, a heavier knit sweater may look a little more casual. If you are in an office that is a little relaxed, though, you can consider a few options. A good Shetland crew neck or cable knit will not be too bulky to pull off indoors and can be dressed up for a smart appearance. As long as your underneath is sharp, you should look great.

Cable Knit V-Neck Sweaters

They display vertical patterns of crossing tables. They are thick and mostly worn during cold climates. You can suit up for the cooler weather by layering a cable-knit sweater between your shirt and coat.

It’s our firm belief that every man should have certain wardrobe staples in the closet.

Perhaps it’s your first professional job and you need to dress up. Perhaps you’re undergoing a career change and with it a wardrobe change. Or, perhaps you haven’t updated your wardrobe in some time and it’s missing some key pieces.

Whatever your situation is, a few staple wardrobe items can give you the confidence to traverse any situation, from the boardroom to social occasions. Hold your head up and look good while you work – here are our professional wardrobe staples:

Get our quick checklist for styling your first day of work here

A tailored suit

We really can’t overstate the importance of a tailored suit. A good suit becomes the foundation of your wardrobe and helps you to convey that important, professional look. We suggest you choose a suit in either navy or grey for a classic color that will last over time and fashion trends.

Why go for a suit fitted by a tailor? Primarily because you can’t beat the quality and fit of the suit. By definition, a tailored suit is made to fit you, therefore you don’t have issues with length and fit that you do from a suit off the rack. Fit means flattering, and flattering means you’re creating a good impression.

A tailored suit also offers you quality materials which often aren’t the priority in off-the-rack suiting. Cost effective and fast tends to be the aim of the game for those, meaning you end up with something that doesn’t last the distance or simply isn’t as well-made. A custom tailor takes pride in every stitch, valuing quality and precision.

Lastly, a tailored suit is never out of fashion. If you choose a timeless style and color, your suit can last you a long time, making the investment worth the money.

A blazer

A blazer is an incredibly versatile piece of clothing. No, it is not worn as a substitute for a suit, but sits somewhere in between suit and business casual. A blazer is usually worn with complementary, but not matching trousers and can be dressed up with a tie, or down with an open collar.

Blazers are more formal than sports jackets and come in different styles, attributed to different countries of origin. The American-style blazer tends to be a two-button jacket with soft shoulders. It is usually in a classic color such as navy. The weave of the blazer is finer than that of a sport jacket tends to be.

The versatility of the blazer is why it belongs in a professional wardrobe. You can move seamlessly between different settings, particularly those that are slightly less formal. If you’ve chosen the classic navy color, this pairs well with grey trousers or even a quality denim for business casual.

Trousers

Besides the matching trousers for your tailored suit, you’re going to need at least a couple of pairs to coordinate with your blazer. It’s also worth giving thought to what you might wear for a business casual event.

A perfect pair of trousers tends to follow the shape of your body – wider at the waste and tapering down. There should be no excessive fabric or ballooning areas. Trousers should be fitted, but not so tight that you can’t move naturally. They should rest comfortably above your hips.

Consider the fabric of your trousers and the weather you will be wearing them in. Heavier fabrics tend to hang more smoothly, but they won’t be so comfortable if you’re in a warm climate. If you travel for work, it may be useful to have trousers in different weights.

In terms of business casual, khakis or even dark wash denim may be acceptable – the key is to know what goes at your workplace. Generally speaking, you will need trousers in a color different from your blazer for that business casual look.

Dress and sports shirts

We would recommend you have a selection of six dress shirts, as well as a couple of sports shirts in different colors and styles. Importantly, at least three or four of your dress shirts should be a good match for your tailored suit.

Your shirts are also worth having tailored, to help give you a sleek profile. A well-fitted shirt should allow two fingers in the collar when buttoned. The shoulder points should fit perfectly at your shoulder and not extend any farther. Of course, you need a little room to move too – at the chest and waist, you should be able to pinch out no more than one to three inches of fabric.

In terms of fabrics, consider quality that wears well throughout the day. Cheaper, off-the-rack shirts are often made from polyester that not only wrinkles, but doesn’t breathe very well. Natural fibers such as cotton tend to wear well and some blends look good too. If you’re worried about creases, try shirts that are crease-resistant.

You may have cause to wear sport shirts for casual occasions too. Look for something that still gives you a polished look, even if the situation is informal. Something like a sport shirt (as shown below) is a good option.Wardrobe staples

Dress shoes and belt

At least one quality pair of dress shoes are essential. There are many different styles to choose from, but one overall suggestion from us is to avoid any that are square-toed or pointy. These are dated looks that haven’t weathered well.

On the other hand, some classic styles are relatively timeless. The Oxford is one of these – a round-toed shoe named for their origins among students at Oxford University.

The Oxford with its closed lacing provides a slim silhouette and a minimalist look that is versatile enough to go from business to casual. There are a few different styles of Oxford, for which this article provides an excellent rundown. For business wear, dark brown or black tend to be your safest choices.

Loafers are another popular style, especially if you travel through airports for work, necessitating the removal of your shoes. The slip-on style has been acknowledged as acceptable business-wear since the 1960s.

As for a belt, choose something that is a good match for your shoes. It should complete your outfit, but not draw the eye.

Ties

There’s often a lot of confusion over ties and how to wear them well – one tip we have is to buy the ties last. They should be a good match for the expensive suiting you have in your wardrobe. It is a mistake to buy a tie just because you “like it,” then find yourself scrambling to match it to an outfit.

The right tie is about proportion. A man of an average size should choose a tie of three to three and a half inches in width. Men who are very tall may get away with a wider width, while men who are shorter may need a narrower width to be in proportion.

Have at least two ties in your wardrobe, chosen because their colors and patterns complement your suit and shirt ensemble.

Patterned dress socks

When we say “patterned socks,” we are not talking about novelty socks in loud patterns. Patterns might be formed by the knit style, or be a more subtle sort of pattern.

A “safe” rule to follow is to match your socks with your trousers. This way there is no contrast to draw attention to your socks. As you develop a sense of your own preferred style though, a pattern can add interest (without heading into the realms of “loud” or “tacky.”)

One thing to note with socks is the quality. Mass-produced socks that you pick up for just a few dollars at a chain store tend to be of much lower quality and won’t last long.

Better quality socks tend to have more time spent on their construction, including stronger seams and more hand-guided sewing. They’re also usually made of better fibers, such as fine knit wool socks. You’ll pay more for them, but they look better and last longer. Socks made in places like the UK, USA or Italy are often of better quality.

Final thoughts

With these wardrobe staples, you can effectively build a sort of “capsule wardrobe” that takes you from the office, to the airport, to a business casual occasion.

We recommend choosing quality clothing built to last over time, rather than “fast fashion” that is made cheaply and not constructed as well. You can end up going through several “off-the-rack” pieces in the same period of time that one quality, tailored suit from a specialty store that wants to get to know your preferences. All across the nation, the average workplace is becoming more casual. But that doesn’t always mean you can wear jeans and a t-shirt to your place of employment. Even if your office has embraced casual business wear, you still need to put effort into how you look.

Traditionally, men’s professional business attire was a fairly safe bet. You’d coordinate a two-piece suit, match it with a tie and dress shirt, and you’d be good to go. But these were the simpler days.

As the industry now embraces the more relaxed business casual dress code, finding appropriate attire has become more daunting than ever. The idea is to achieve a perfect balance – to dress appropriately without appearing too stiff … to be casual without being too casual.

If you find it all a little baffling, this article is for you. We shall go over all the fundamental do’s and don’ts you should consider as you make the transition to casual.

Business casual Do’s

If done right, men’s business casual clothing can be a stylish and highly versatile look. You can wear the same outfit for both formal and non-formal occasions, like a client meeting and then a dinner date right after. But the key here is “done right.”

A few tweaks you can make right off the bat include wearing the suit without the tie or blending your blazers with different colored pants.

Here are a few other do’s to get you started.

Do…Make sure your clothing fits properly

Whether your closet is full of premium men’s suits or you’re more of a button-down and casual men’s pants kind of guy, your clothing still needs to fit you as it should.

In 2016, a study found that American men over the age of 18 spent $85 per month on menswear, but even an expensive jacket can look cheap if you don’t tailor it to your proportions. Overly baggy shirts or too-short pants can completely ruin any positive impression you’re trying to make.

If you’re embracing casual business wear, you still need the fit to be impeccable.

Do…Look around at what people are wearing

Perhaps the most understated way of knowing what to wear is by simply looking around at what people are wearing in your office. This usually sets the tone and will tell you what is acceptable and what isn’t. Are most people in chinos and button-down shirts, or are the majority of guys wearing jeans and plain white tees?

If it’s all too random, you can ask someone in the company’s HR department for advice or higher-ups on what business casual clothing best represents the company’s brand or, better yet, what is totally unacceptable.

Do…Dress down your formal business attire

Rather than thinking of “business casual” as putting a jacket over your jeans and t-shirt, you need to find ways to make your professional clothes a bit less stuffy.

That means starting with a formal suit and dressing down from there. You can easily swap out dress pants for nicely tailored chinos or corduroy trousers. Usually, a collared button-down shirt is still considered to be casual business wear, but you can swap it out for a nice polo shirt in summer. A tweed jacket can be a welcome break from a more formal suit jacket.

But be careful not to abandon those more formal staples completely; you can easily mix and match them with other items to get longevity out of your wardrobe.

Do…Wear clean, wrinkle-free attire

This should be a no-brainer. Whether or not you’re in a business environment, It is vital that you keep your clothes clean and wrinkle-free. This shows that, even though you’re business casual, you still care about how you present yourself professionally.

Keep in mind that it only takes 1/10 of a second to create a first impression. You don’t want it to be a wrinkly one, do you?

Do…wear smart pants

While business casual means veering away from suits and dress pants, not just any casual pants will suffice. You want to go for smart pants. Think chino pants, a decent pair of khakis, or business casual jeans. You can also go for cotton pants, as long as they are well-pressed and clean.

Do…Stick to the classics

Select outfit combinations are a staple in the business casual community. This means they have been tried and proven suitable in almost every business environment. One good example is the smart pants with long-sleeved shirt combination. You can pair this with a jacket or a well-cut blazer and a pair of Oxfords.

The trick here is investing in quality pieces that complement your physique. Consider tailor-made fits for your shirts and trousers. A good tailor will advise on what design and fabric will suit you best.

Business casual don’ts

The danger of business casual clothing is that it’s easy to overdo the casual bit and dress down too much. The rule of thumb here is to lean more on the professional side whenever in doubt. It’s always better to overdress than underdress.

Here are some other key pieces you should avoid.

Don’t…Wear loud patterns or excessive accessories

Basically, you want to avoid anything too bold and bright or too showy. This can be an overly bright tie, branded shirt, or cargo pants with excess pockets. A simple pair of chinos will serve you better while still pulling off the casual look.

The more simple and neutral your clothes are, the more elegant your look appears. Colors like white, tan, black, and blue never go out of style.

On the same note, avoid being too casual with your accessories. Go for a leather messenger bag instead of a backpack. Or match your belt to your shoes. It’s the small details that bring your ensemble together.

Don’t…Wear sneakers to work

Some men see “casual” and automatically think that sneakers are fine. Contrary to popular belief, however, sneakers do not belong in a casual business environment. Regardless of how great your new ‘kicks’ look, you’d do better to save your athletic wear for the gym or weekends. Needless to say, the same applies to sandals or slip-on.

Loafers and oxfords, for example, are versatile and look just as good with a suit as they do with jeans and a polo shirt. That makes them a great investment. It’s best to have both black and brown options to cover your bases.

Choosing your footwear as a finishing touch can make your outfit look complete (or can completely derail your look, if chosen poorly).

Don’t…Wear mismatched clothing

As related to the previous entry, the worst thing you can wear to work is a mismatched outfit. Some obvious examples are a hoodie with dress pants or sneakers with anything official.

Of course, this is not to say that you shouldn’t mix things up. By all means … try that cardigan and collar-shirt combination, but do it in front of a mirror first. Even better, seek a second opinion.

Don’t…Be afraid to mix it up

While you should generally stay away from ensembles that look too casual, that doesn’t mean you have to restrict your style. A high-quality knit can be a great alternative or even a supplement to a button-down and jacket.

And although you shouldn’t look outlandish, you can also be a little freer with color and pattern options with a business casual look. Many top men’s clothing brands now cater to customers who want options that are slightly less formal, so it’s more common to see some deviation from the more boring basics.

Takeaway

The casual business style of dressing is rapidly becoming the new norm. To fit in, you have to quickly settle on a style that compliments you. A good place to start is dressing formally and then dressing it down bit by bit.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that “casual business wear” doesn’t mean you can wear whatever you want, in most cases. And ultimately, it’s better to be a bit overdressed than to look messy.

At the same time, you have to get the right fit. A bespoke, well-tailored outfit will almost instantly transform your everyday outfit into a statement piece.

By utilizing more formal wardrobe basics and mixing them with slightly more casual elements — and working with an experienced tailor to ensure everything fits properly — you’ll look professional in any situation. Contact us today for more professional insights and business casual clothes for men.

The post A Men’s Guide to Wearing Layers appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
Welcome to class, gentlemen. Today, we will explore the art of layering. Notwithstanding the weather, layering plays a central role in helping you stay comfortable, feel great, and look even more stunning. It can also allow you to explore your creative side with various looks, adding a touch of complexity to your signature style.

This comprehensive guide covers how to master the art of layering clothes for men. Read on to find out more.

What Is Layering?

Layering is a styling technique that encompasses adding different clothing pieces to your ensembles for functional and aesthetic purposes. And just like ensuring you attain the perfect fit for your clothes, mastering the art of wearing layers is a secret weapon in every fashionable man’s arsenal.

Generally, layering is an all-season look. It transcends naturally to fall and spring – with changing temperatures making it easy to have clothing items you can remove or add throughout the day. And with the right pieces, you can achieve a layered look year-round.

The Rules of Layering

Remember that the secret to successful layering is not going on a shopping haul buying as many clothing items as you can – it is making the best of what you already own (assuming you already have the essentials) to create a unique look at no cost.

A layered look can be achieved using everyday clothing items such as sweaters, jackets, shirts, and scarves. And like all things fashion, there are some rules to follow when it comes to layering. You can view these rules as best practices.

1. Each Clothing Item Should Be Something You Can Wear on Its Own

One of the fundamentals of layering! If you feel uncomfortable wearing a layer on its own, then it won’t work perfectly when layering. And if you are like most people, you most likely have a space in your wardrobe for clothing items you can only wear under sweaters. But what if the temperatures rise unexpectedly or someone spills a drink on you, and you must take off your sweater?

Any visible layer should be something you could put on as the only layer in the specific part of the body with just your coat/jacket. If the clothing does not fit you well or is flimsy or tacky, it should not have any place in your outfit.

2. Stick to One or Two Bold Colors

Eager to make a statement? Stay away from many bold colors. While you can play around with multiple colors, the secret is accentuating your subtle tones with one or two “poppers”. For example, if you’ve got bright red trousers, do not wear a lemon yellow shirt and a hot pink scarf.

You can never go wrong with this formula: light inside, dark outside. Simply put, put on lighter colors close to your body and have darker colors in the outer layers.

3. Outer Hems Should Always Be Longer Than Inner Hems

As a rule of thumb, the hem of your outer layers of clothing should always conceal the hem of your inner clothing pieces. And while you may have spotted Gen Zs walking around with their shirt tails poking out from underneath their sweater, it’s never a great look. In fact, you shouldn’t be attempting such a look unless you are very positive you want to.

4. Do Not Go Beyond Three Layers

Three is the magic number when it comes to successful layering. Anything more than this is overkill and can easily give you a bulky look. Always keep in mind that two is a great choice, three layers are the sweet spot, and four is overkill.

5. Layering With Textures

When it comes to achieving the perfect layered look, textures are key. A thoughtfully-textured outfit can transform your look from basic to sophisticated effortlessly. The secret to looking put together with different textures is to mix fabrics with different finishes and weights to create a unique and stylish outfit.

6. Work Your Outfit From Thin to Thick

Generally, you should wear lighter fabrics like a t-shirt or a thin turtleneck close to your body and build your look with thicker items as you work outwards. Your base layer should be soft and comfortable because it is in direct contact with your skin, and all other clothing items will be packed on top of it.

This guideline, however, is rather obvious and often goes without saying. For example, you would never put on a heavy woolen sweater over a cotton dress shirt.

Layering Ideas

It is common knowledge that layering applies to the top half of your body. Also, most layering combinations consist of a bottom, middle and top layer, and an outer layer when the temperatures are extremely low. To achieve the perfect layered look, it’s important to have several layering essentials, for example:

  • Shirts – popular selections include a Henley shirt, flannel shirt, oxford shirt, and denim shirt.
  • Sweaters and vests – go for a cardigan sweater, v-neck sweater, hooded sweatshirt or a dark-colored vest.
  • Jackets and overcoats – popular selections include a leather jacket, raincoat, top coat, blazer, or field jacket.

Layering is a great way to add style to any outfit. And by selecting the right pieces, you can design an ensemble that’s unique and appealing. Whether you are layering knits, jackets, or shirts, pay attention to the overall goal you are trying to achieve.

There is no better way of showing support for your local, favorite, or school football team than attending their games. More so, dressing comfortably and stylishly while attending football games displays your team spirit. It enhances your overall experience and makes a positive impression on those around you. Continue reading for tips on achieving the right balance of smart-casual style and practicality when attending football games.

Layer Up With a Stylish Sweater, Hoodie, or Jacket

An essential factor determining the ideal outfit for a particular game day is the prevailing weather. When outdoors, the weather is, in most cases, unpredictable, and thus, it is always essential to dress in layers. This allows you to adjust your outfit according to the temperature.

A classic option for men includes a stylish bomber jacket or a versatile Gregor outdoor windproof sweater. However, your fashionable jacket should complement your overall look. In addition, ensure that the colors of your jacket match your team’s colors or remain neutral if you are not supporting any of the team playing.

Rock on Your Team’s Gear

You can’t go wrong with wearing your team’s gear. Wearing a sports team-inspired jersey or T-shirt makes you look sharp and helps you connect with fellow fans. A pair of trim-fit chinos with a classic team jersey or stretch Oxford shirt in a team’s color is perfect for guys yearning for a mature and professional look.

Complete the look by rocking comfortable, stylish sneakers, athletic shoes, or Chelsea boots. Having comfy sneakers is crucial, as you will be on your feet walking and cheering throughout the game.

Accessories

Don’t forget to carry sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun rays while adding a cool touch to your outfit. Other essential accessories that you should have on a sunny day include a baseball cap with your team’s logo or hat to avoid the sun’s glare and sunscreen to protect your skin.

To add a personal touch to your outfit, you can wear a stylish wristwatch, a necklace with your team’s emblem, and your team’s wristband. A stylish, lightweight scarf with your team’s colors or logo, a pair of gloves, and a warm knit beanie is ideal for keeping you warm during cold weather. You can easily remove them when the temperature rises.

Stay Comfy With Casual Jeans, Shorts, or Joggers

Comfortable joggers, shorts, plain V-neck tees, knit henley shirts, seamless polos, and wool sneakers are gaining popularity as men’s athleisure for vegging out yet still looking stylish. Wearing breathable and comfortable garments allows you to move freely or easily stand up and sit back down to cheer. Ladies can opt for loungewear and athleisure clothing. This includes yoga pants, joggers, or legging with a hoodie or joggers and a turtleneck.

Crossbody Bag or Backpack

It is essential to have a sleek backpack or crossbody bag to carry your items or accessories. Besides providing secure storage for essentials, a crossbody bag or backpack keeps your hands free when cheering. However, it is vital to carry a sizeable bag as some stadiums have set strict policies regarding bag sizes and styles.

Count on Flannel Shirts to Save the Day

When deciding what to wear to capture the right sharp but casual profile when attending a football match, you can’t lose with a long sleeve flannel shirt. Flannel shirts are versatile wardrobe staples for both men and women as they are comfy, cute, and cozy. Although flannel shirts are considered boring, they are numerous ways to raise the intrigue of these tops to make them classic and trendy.

Women can get classic in flannel by layering them over a pair of high-waisted jeans with a fitted crop top. Another option is to rock on white high-waisted pants or shorts and an off-the-shoulder top, then tie the flannel around the waist. Finally, a flannel shirt is an excellent layering piece. They can be worn as a light overshirt on hot days. It can also be worn over a T-shirt for cold weather protection.

In addition, this type of sweater has experienced a sudden comeback among stylish gentlemen in the modern age. Read on to learn more about turtleneck sweaters, including how they should fit, style, and find the right men’s turtleneck.

What Is a Turtleneck?

A turtleneck is a sweater with a high collar folded over itself, creating a double layer at the neck. Wearers can dress these sweaters in various ways, from sleek classic ways to casual or street-style affairs. In the past, turtleneck sweaters created slim fits to the wearer’s body and were designed to have a ribbed knit on the folded neck portion.

While the name derives from the visual resemblance to a turtle’s skin folds on the neck, turtleneck is often used interchangeably or confused with other sweaters. For example, Mock Neck, Polo Neck, Roll Neck, Skivvy, and Zip Neck are some typical sweaters that resemble turtlenecks. However, these sweaters differ slightly from turtlenecks since others have long, looser, zipped, or high tubular necks.

Types of Turtlenecks for Men

Different types of turtlenecks exist to make them simple to wear and style, whether looking for classic or oversized turtleneck sweaters.

Classic Turtleneck

These include the first turtleneck designs that came about in the early 40s and 50s. Classic turtlenecks are relatively tight-fitting throughout the body and in the neckline. Besides, the neck is slim and thin, and as the original type of turtleneck, these sweaters offer a simple yet elegant fashion. Today, you can wear a classic turtleneck with seasonal fashion styles, from pants to shores and everything in between.

Cable Knit Turtleneck

A cable knit turtleneck is designed from cable-knit sweaters with a knitted pattern but is thicker than the classic turtleneck style. Cable knit turtlenecks are suitable when dressing a turtleneck with more casual outfits like corduroys or jeans. You can also include a fashionable blazer or coast over it for a perfect fit.

Oversized Turtleneck Sweater

These are up-and-coming men’s turtleneck fashion trends, ideal during colder days with a heavier jacket over them. It is a perfect fit when looking for casual wear to the office rather than to a fancy dinner with friends, a lover, or coworkers.

Zip Turtleneck

Like a quarter zip, zip turtlenecks feature a small zipper running from the chest area to the top of the neck. Again, this turtleneck does not bend over or fold but extends to the top of the neck area, similar to the classic turtleneck. However, when wearing this type of turtleneck, you need to wear a more tight-fitting shirt or an undershirt underneath.

Cowl Neck Sweater

Cowl neck sweaters are closer to a sweater than a turtleneck, but the style resembles turtlenecks. It is a great alternative to turtlenecks with a looser neck and usually falls over toward the front. You can include a cowl neck sweater in your wardrobe as it is part of the turtleneck fashion industry. Due to its looser neck, you might consider warmer coats or jackets when it becomes chilly.

Choosing the Right Men’s Turtleneck

With several types and fit options for turtlenecks, it is essential to consider various factors when finding a comfortable, stylish, and well-fitting turtleneck. Here are some things to consider;

Color

The colors you choose for your turtleneck should include seasonal fashion. For instance, white and off-white are ideal turtleneck colors for winter, contrasting the dark colors of the distinctive wintertime outfit. For summer, consider lighter colors, such as off-white, tans, beige, blues, and gray. Darker tans, oranges, deep yellow, navy, and browns are perfect for fall.

Fit

Turtlenecks are designed to be tighter on the body to complement the neckline that sits tight around the neck for warmth. However, when it comes to fit, it is a personal preference for what makes you feel comfortable. It also depends on the style of each turtleneck, such as cowl neck sweaters that are looser on the neck.

Turtlenecks also come in different weight classes, where some have thicker materials while others have thinner, layered materials. With turtlenecks, thinner materialled-turtlenecks, you will find them the tightest compared to thicker materialled-turtlenecks.

Layering

You can wear turtlenecks as undershirts or a shirt underneath, especially with a larger sweater turtleneck. Nonetheless, it is recommended to wear turtlenecks as undershirts since they are tight-fitting and provide adequate warmth.

How to Style a Turtleneck Sweater

Turtlenecks are unique in menswear and can be dressed easier than most garments. Here are some exciting ways to wear turtlenecks with style.

Turtlenecks With Suits

Turtlenecks are ideal when wearing a suit as it makes the style appear softer. For instance, you can combine a gray turtleneck with a navy suit to achieve a different look than wearing a white shirt and a tie. However, avoid combinations like a turtleneck with stripped suites and a jacket.

Turtlenecks for Evening Wear

Turtlenecks combine best with a tuxedo or dinner jacket, especially when you get a perfect blend of colors. Besides a black tie that creates a sturdier level of formality, a turtleneck presents a more appealing dress code for evening wear.

Wearing Turtleneck Casually

A thinner knit under layering apparel like a denim shirt or an overshirt is a great option to dress a turtleneck sweater. Finishing the dress code with a pair of jeans and boots creates flawless casual wear. You can also enhance a casual turtle sweater with flannel trousers or corduroy and a pea coat.

Bottom Line

Choosing comfortable, stylish, and well-fitting turtlenecks for men is crucial for your overall fashion regardless of the season. Considering the color, type of turtleneck, layering, fit, and style options are crucial to get you started. What do you wear when an occasion calls for you to wear a bit less than a suit, but a lot more than casual attire?

An unconstructed (or unstructured) jacket or blazer is one answer to this question that will see men through from the workplace to a weekend gathering.

We’d go as far as to say an unconstructed jacket is a wardrobe essential, especially for the versatility it can provide. Here we’re looking at this wonderful jacket and how to wear it:

Free download: How to choose an unconstructed jacket

What is an unconstructed jacket?

An unconstructed jacket can be described like a shirt jacket or blazer. It retains the shape and hallmarks of more formal dress, but does not have shoulder pads, canvas or possibly even an inter-lining. (Some versions have no lining, or just a partial lining to allow for pockets).

Some other common features of the unconstructed jacket might include patch pockets, exposed seams and working cuffs.

The unconstructed jacket is often more like a medium or heavy-weight shirt, however it is cut like a jacket with vents, lapels and pockets. The goal is to be lighter in weight and have an artful casualness and elegance. The shape is more soft and loose, but this type of construction needs to be well-tailored and accessorized.

You will find unconstructed jackets in different wools, knits, linens or blended combinations. In fact, they have become a popular staple for men’s wardrobes.

When to wear an unconstructed jacket

As we mentioned, one thing we love about this jacket is its versatility; that said, let’s start with when NOT to wear it. The answer is quite simple – in any workplace or on any occasion when the dress code is formal, an unconstructed jacket is not appropriate. It doesn’t have the padding, lining and stiffer lines that are expected in formal situations.

However, the unconstructed jacket has gained acceptance in many workplaces where the dress code leans more toward business casual. Think spring or summer wear – these jackets are lightweight and very breathable.

If you’re someone who travels a lot, an unconstructed jacket may be your new best find. The breathability means they are very comfortable and the unconstructed nature makes them easy to fold or tuck away. If you choose a jacket made from wool or a wool blend, the natural stretch of the wool helps any creases to drop out. (It’s often as easy as hanging your jacket in a steamy bathroom).

In fact, the unconstructed jacket usually requires less care than a tailored suit jacket. It will often stand for being rolled into a suitcase, meaning you don’t have to travel with bulky garment bags.

When else is a great time to wear your unconstructed jacket? After work! You’ll see people sporting this jacket at weekend events or social gatherings in the evenings. It allows you to feel comfortable in both the business and leisure environments because you won’t be over or under-dressed. In fact, you can still coordinate a slick ensemble that wouldn’t be out of place in settings where a higher standard of dress is expected.

Fitting your unconstructed jacket

While the unconstructed jacket doesn’t have the tighter formality of your tailored suit jacket, it’s still important to get the fit right. In any outfit, the key to looking sharp is how it fits. A sack could look good on a person if it is tailored to fit!

With this in mind, if you’re purchasing an unconstructed jacket off the rack, it’s important to buy the right size. It should fit you close to your body, yet leave enough room for layering. For example, on a cold day, you might wear it on top of a fitted Merino cardigan over the top of a t-shirt for a stylish casual look.

Of course, the best option of all is to have your unconstructed jacket tailored to fit you. This is something we can help you with here at Family Britches!

How to coordinate an unconstructed jacket

The best thing about an unconstructed jacket is its versatility for different sorts of outfits. You could compare it to chinos – it’s not out of place in a more formal setting, nor is it overdone if you’re meeting someone for coffee at the weekend.

We find that the newer silhouettes in trousers and shirts compliment this type of jacket well. For example, our Canali Kei Model Unlined Sport Coat ensemble will look sharp in any business casual setting. Add interest to your outfit by choosing a shirt with a modern pattern.

unconstructed jacket

The above example features a slack in tropical wool, but you might also go with your regular dress trousers or some of the new stretch blends of trouser.

Your unconstructed jacket can be worn in a casual setting with shorts. For example, think about a weekend at the yacht club, pairing your jacket with chino shorts and a button-down shirt.

As another casualwear example, pair your unconstructed jacket with an upscale pair of jeans, a plain white t-shirt and some dress sneakers, boots or dress shoes. This is the sort of outfit that will look stylish for your weekend social outings.

While you can wear your jacket in less formal business settings, the look tends to be better without a tie. With this in mind, newer, trimmer fit shirts in performance fabrics, no-iron patterns or solids, linens and geometric patterns can coordinate well.

If you’re really unsure about how formally to dress for a situation, your unconstructed jacket is a great choice. In most cases, you won’t be over or under-dressed if you pair it with some tailored chinos and a button-down shirt. If you know the dress code is more on the casual side, something like a polo shirt can look sharp under your jacket.

In any situation, the unconstructed jacket can be the perfect replacement for a sweater, completing an outfit for the office or social events.

Final thoughts

The unconstructed jacket is a personal go-to for many on our team. The special thing about it is its versatility across a range of dress codes and situations. If you’re going from your business casual workplace to an event, this is the jacket that will see you through both.

Dress it up or down, roll it into your suitcase for travel and pair it with your jeans at the weekend. We recommend you get a good unconstructed jacket for your wardrobe – consider it an investment piece that will see you through many stylish ensembles.

You do not need to put away your dresses during fall and winter. Instead, you can layer dresses with clothing and shoes to elevate your outfit while keeping warm. Transform your summer dress into a fall and winter outfit by layering it with inner clothes, outer clothes, and accessories.

Let’s explore ways to use the three layering techniques with summer dresses for fall and winter.

Adding Inner Layers Under the Dress

One of the best ways to layer the dress is to find items you can wear under it to make the dress a statement piece, such as:

  • Turtle necks
  • Blouses and shirts
  • Tights, socks, pants, onesies

Turtle Necks to Layer With Dresses

A creative way to layer a dress is to wear a classical turtle neck under a dress. To keep warm, you can wear woolen or cashmere turtle necks. You can avoid bulkiness and shapelessness by maintaining a simple fall and winter theme by sticking to neutral colors such as black, white, grey, brown, or beige.

An important fashion tip to consider is balancing out the dress and turtle neck textures, fabrics, complementary colors, patterns, and prints to create a more distinct layering effect. To avoid bulkiness and shapelessness, ensure that you use a properly fitted long-sleeved turtle neck over a thicker or loose dress to create a slim and toned silhouette.

Blouses and Shirts

Another styling tip is wearing blouses or shirts under a dress. You can wear silk or cotton blouses, especially strappy dresses or short-sleeved V-neck dresses. They help to keep you warm while elevating your look from casual summer to formal fall outfits.

Apart from blouses, button-down shirts and T-shirts can offer an additional creative flair to layering fall outfits. To keep warm and avoid shapelessness, you should layer fitted cotton, cashmere, silk, or knit shirts and T-shirts underneath dresses. You can also avoid bulkiness by maintaining a monochrome outfit or wearing sheer blouses, shirts, or T-shirts.

Tights, Socks, Pants, Onesies

Fall is the best time to layer dresses with tights and socks before the temperatures become too cold and frosty in winter. If you want to stay simple, you can wear black, brown, or beige tights and socks under your dress to keep you warm while adding a flair of elegance to your look. However, you can also create a romantic and edgy look by wearing lace. Alternatively, showcase your playful and youthful side by incorporating fun monograms and patterns.

Add additional layers, such as cotton pants and onesies, under your dress when the weather becomes cold and frosty. You have to option of going simple in neutral colors such as black, brown, or beige or spicing up the look with complementary prints and patterns.

To avoid bulkiness and shapelessness, you should wear tight or fitted tights, socks, pants, and onesies. You should also wear tights, socks, pants, and onesies created from thin yet warm fabric such as cotton, nylon, leather, suede, and polyester spandex.

Adding Outer Layers Over the Dress

Another major tip for styling dresses for fall and winter is adding overcoats that keep you warm and elegant. You can add overcoats such as;

  • Jackets
  • Sweaters
  • Coats

If you want an edgy yet elegant look while staying warm, you can throw on long outercoats such as leather jackets, wool sweaters, fur coats, or gabardine trench coats. However, when the temperature is cool, you can throw on outercoats that are cropped or created from light cotton, plastic, and PVC.

To avoid bulkiness and shapeless, you can stick to fitted tailored outercoats. You should also avoid clashing prints and patterns and stick to neutral colors such as black, brown, and beige or maintain a monochromatic look.

Use Accessories to Layer With Dresses

If appropriately used, accessories can help you avoid bulkiness and shapelessness by creating a slim and toned silhouette. Accessories include:

  • Belts
  • Scarves
  • Shoes
  • Jewelry
  • Bags

Place a belt over a jacket, sweater, blazer, or coat to give an illusion of an hourglass figure. When styling scarves, you should avoid having both ends hanging down. Instead, have one end shorter or wrapped around with only one end hanging to create a slimmer silhouette.

You can create an edgy and elegant look with thigh-high boots, ankle boots, and high heels, or go casual in sneakers and lace-up combat boots. Avoid bulkiness and shapelessness by sticking to shoes in neutral colors such as white, black, grey, brown, and beige. However, you can add flair and fun by wearing satin, suede, or PVC shoes.

When it comes to jewelry, avoid bulky horizontal pieces such as Cuban chains and chokers. Instead, go for simple necklaces with long strands. You may also need to keep it simple and only wear one statement bracelet or watch that complements your necklaces instead lots of jewelry pieces.

Bags can also elevate your outfit and enhance your slim and toned silhouette. An important tip is avoiding shoulder bags with long straps; instead, opt for bags such as totes and clutches because they follow the slim silhouette.

Winter is an interesting time for business casual. Most business casual ensembles default to a moderate temperature. Light dress shirts, knits, and slacks work well most of the year, but what about when you need to keep warm? The best way to achieve a comfortably warm and professionally laid-back look is with winter layering.

Winter business casual is all about knowing how to combine your layers. A smart-looking winter ensemble can improve your stature and also come apart easily if the day warms up. The key is to know how to combine your layers and to avoid ill-fitting pieces that throw off your professional look.

The Essential Elements of Men’s Winter Layering for Business Casual

  • Undershirt
  • Dress Shirt or Turtleneck
  • Tie or No Tie
  • Sweater or Vest
  • Blazer or Sport Jacket
  • Formal Flannel
  • Winter Slacks
  • Winter Suits
  • Gloves and Scarf
  • Winter Dress Shoes &Socks

The way you build your winter wardrobe should depend on the weather and your working conditions. Are you bundling up to tour outdoor properties or preparing to shrug off your overcoat in a well-heated office? Know the level of formality and number of layers you want to incorporate. And in the winter, never skip the undershirt or good socks.

Crisp Dress Shirt and Sweater

The single most popular business casual winter look for men is the dress shirt and sweater combination. A crisp dress shirt – open or closed collar – with or without a tie – looks great underneath a sharp-looking knit or even fleece sweater. Tight weave and rich color are important. Focus on lighter colors for the shirt and dark autumn and winter colors for the sweater.

If you wear a tie, color-coordinate with the sweater. Decide whether to tuck your cuffs back around the sweater sleeves for an added layered style. Wear warmer slacks or suit pants that match or compliment the sweater.

Try Winter Layering With a Turtleneck and Jacket or Vest

Turtlenecks are a great way to look sleek and stay warm at the same time. A light-colored turtle neck with a looser fit will make you seem softer and more friendly, while a dark closely fitted turtle neck can create an air of mystery.

A turtle neck under a sports jacket can make you look like a business casual artist, and turtlenecks pair well with fitted slacks that follow the line of your legs rather than a straight cut.

A turtle neck or well-fitted knit can also look excellent with a vest. A sweater or fleece vest will create a more approachable look while a solid or pattern vest in nylon, corduroy or wool adds a greater layer of formality to your winter look.

Winter Wool Suit

There’s no greater classic than the wool suit. Both two and three-piece wool suits are designed to keep you warm during a cold business season. Three-piece suits including a vest are especially stylish for keeping warm, and the vest can be used for alternate outfits that are slightly less formal but still efficiently insulate your core.

Winter suits are best in grays and blues. Pinstripes are elegant but bold patterns are more often reserved for warmer seasons. Instead, focus your desire for color on tie designs, which are often festive around the holidays.

Overcoat and Scarf

If you need to transition from freezing outdoors to mild indoor temperatures, consider the appeal of an overcoat and scarf. A friendly classic, the overcoat, and scarf allow you to quickly bundle up to duck between buildings or out to lunch but shed to a more all-seasons business casual outfit beneath the coat.

In colder climates, many businessmen combine a winter suit or sport-jacket outfit with an overcoat in addition. This double-jacket approach is quite normal in the Northeast and Europe.

Sweater and Sport Jacket

Another great way to use a warm winter sports jacket is over a business casual sweater or knit. A good sweater can look great in the office as part of your business casual attire. Make it more formal and warmer outdoors with the addition of a stylish sports jacket that flatters the shape of you and the sweater.

Business Casual Accessories

Hats, scarves, socks, and winter shoes are also essential to be both stylish and warm in the winter. Business casual style demands black or brown men’s shoes in a formal style. Pick up some ankle-height boots or padded loafers – depending on your expected terrain – along with a heavier type of sock to keep your feet warm.

As for hats and scarves, here is where the local style should be your guide. Scarves, like ties, can be formal and practical or they can be the one item in your business casual style that is colorful and entertaining.

]]>
The term “business casual” sounds like you’re going to have no trouble finding something to wear. It sounds easy, but if you’re in a new job or you’re unfamiliar with the term, it can be a bit stressful.

What are they talking about? Is it business, or is it casual? Can I wear my weekend attire to the office?

This dress code is a frequent source of confusion for workers who worry about going too far in either direction. No one enjoys standing out for the wrong reasons! So, what does this instruction usually mean? Let’s dig in:

Avoid business casual faux pas – download our checklist here

The truth about business casual

The definition of business casual is generally taken to mean “dress professionally, but more relaxed attire than traditional business wear is okay.” In truth, that doesn’t really shed a lot of light on it, and definitions of business casual tend to vary from business to business.

In some businesses, business casual basically seems to mean “you don’t have to wear your tie,” while in some Silicon Valley companies, jeans paired with a dress shirt have become ubiquitous.

There is no standard definition of business casual for every workplace, so it’s important to do your homework first, especially if this is your first time dealing with it in your current job. No one enjoys feeling like they’re overdressed, but there’s nothing worse than being underdressed for the occasion. This isn’t a day at the beach – it is probably a mistake to pull out your weekend athleisure wear!

“Business casual” is often one of the most confusing instructions in the workplace
Share on X

Define business casual in your workplace

If you’re an employee wondering what to wear for your first business casual day, try asking around about the dress code. If you can’t get a clear answer, we’d err more on the side of business rather than casual attire. Dressing on the conservative side can get you through under the radar, but it’s difficult to dress up an outfit that is too casual in the first place!

If you happen to be a manager or owner reading this, it’s up to you to define what business casual means for your business and ensure that employees know. This is something that can cause unnecessary angst, and you definitely have better things for staff to be focusing energy on. Your new employees should be arriving on their first day both confident and comfortable!

It doesn’t hurt to have some specifics stated in the employee manual, or even in email communication. No one likes the feeling of having to guess!

Do’s and don’ts of business casual

The first and most obvious “don’t” is to avoid showing up to work in something that might be worn to the beach. Shorts are generally a no-no, as are t-shirts or polo shirts unless otherwise specified. Footwear should still be professional, such as a pair of loafers or oxfords that can easily go with an outfit dressed up or down. This is a critical mistake that many people make, forgetting to consider footwear or thinking that they can get away with sneakers. In a professional setting, sneakers are usually out.

Do keep your clothing simple. Find neutral-toned clothes that you can mix and match, such as plain dress shirts to be worn without a tie. Depending on the office code, you may want to avoid accessories, patterns or colors that can be distracting. In more formal “business casual” offices, you can opt for your suit, sans tie. The Eton Shirt in a plain fabric, or the Canali double-faced wool sport coat are great options for a casual Friday showing. Try pairing the sport coat with jeans or cords if these are acceptable as part of the office dress code.

Business casual

The Eton shirt

Business casual

Do “dress for the job you want.” This means avoiding getting sloppy at all, even if it is casual Friday. Wear clothing that is clean, ironed and impeccably presented. This means no holes or loose threads. You should also ensure that the clothes fit you well. Today is not the day to wear clothing that is too loose or too tight, or generally ill-fitting. Consider visiting your tailor for a business casual look that keeps you on the professional side. Clothes that fit well are worth the good impression they create.

Pay attention to your fabric choices too. Distressed or frayed fabrics, or cheap-looking, shiny synthetic fabrics should be avoided. You may be able to include some nice, wrinkle-free wools or lightweight, breathable blends. Crease-resistant shirts are also a good option.

Do dress for style rather than trends. Style tends to mean elegant clothing in a cut and fabric that is made to outlast any fashion trend. These sorts of pieces are versatile, and you will often find yourself mixing and matching them for years. On the other hand, clothing that looks good on a model as part of a seasonal trend doesn’t necessarily translate well to the office.

Do maintain consistency with your regular standard of dress. If your style is professional and conservative every other day, it’s not the best idea to show up looking unrecognizably casual. If your company is one where jeans are acceptable for casual wear, make sure you’re wearing your best jeans. A pair with a very dark wash and no embellishments or tearing is usually a safe bet.

If you’re in the position where you’re not sure of the business casual standard, do wear layers. If you err on the side of formal dress but have the ability to remove layers, then you can dress your outfit down if need be. For example, if you’re wearing a dress shirt, cardigan sweater and sports coat, the coat and sweater can easily be taken off.

When it comes to accessories, remember the “less is more” adage. Keep them tasteful and unobtrusive as a general rule. Of course, this is one that also very much depends on the culture of the particular workplace. In some offices, more individual flair is encouraged.

Business casual

If jeans are permitted, go for a dark wash such as these Alberto slim fit jeans.

Tips for achieving a business casual look

One way to think about business casual is to think of it as dressing down your more formal attire. That doesn’t automatically mean putting a coat over a pair of jeans – think of the whole outfit from start to finish.

For example, will you swap out your dress pants? What will you substitute them for? Consider how your regular formal wear might look with chinos or corduroy trousers. Your collared shirt is usually a safe bet, although you may want to go for a plain fabric.

Ditch the tie and think about your coat. Will you keep your regular sports coat or blazer, or will you switch it for a knit or cardigan? As an alternative, you might consider a tweed blazer for a less formal look.

Finish your outfit off with a nice pair of leather loafers and basic accessories such as a leather-strapped watch and belt, and you now have an ensemble that will take you from the office to an after-work function in town.

Final thoughts

The term “business casual” can be a minefield for the uninitiated in your company. In fact, if you hire people and have told them that Fridays are business casual without providing them with any guidelines, we virtually guarantee they’ve Googled to find what you mean!

And if you’re the person in the shoes of the newbie trying to figure out what to wear, it’s always better to err on the safe side first. Go for a more conservative look until you’ve established the ways of the workplace.

Business casual always errs more toward professional dress than casual. With a few well-considered pieces though, you can mix and match your outfit to suit any occasion.

Gone are the days when suits and ties were the only outfits acceptable in official workplaces. Most companies and organizations now accept a business casual outfit. Also, you can wear the outfit when attending different events, and all eyes will be on you. But you must style and accessorize the dress code appropriately for a unique, stylish look.

Accessorizing the outfits can be challenging with many different business casual outfits like blazers, khaki pants, bottom-up shirts, collared shirts, sweaters, sweater vests, and more available. Although there are no established guidelines on how to accessorize outfits, some styles seem to work. Keep reading to learn more.

Belts for Business Casual Outfit for Men

Most business casual dress codes for workplaces or events involve wearing perfectly fitting trousers. However, a few men will go for trousers with side adjusters or suspenders, while many will consider wearing a belt. You can look good without a belt, but wearing it will enhance your look.

leather belt will work well with khakis, dress slacks, chinos, and suit pants. You need to choose a color that complements the other outfits or directly contrasts them for a unique look. A black leather belt with a simple silver buckle will work well with almost any slack.

If you are wearing black, grey, or other dark-colored dress pants, it is advisable to wear a black belt. If wearing brown khakis or chinos, you will look best in a brown leather belt. Designers also advise stylish men to match belts with the color of their shoes. For instance, when wearing brown leather shoes, you should wear a brown belt to look fantastic.

You can as well choose to wear a casual fabric belt. However, the belt should complement your shirt or tie, but it should not be too bright. Designers advise men not to wear fabric belts when going to official workplaces to look more casual.

The best thing you can do when choosing a belt is to consider the color of your shoes. Your belt should match your shoes. Also, remember to invest in high-quality belts that will last for years.

Socks

Selecting socks for a business casual dressing code seems easy, but it is not if you want to look stylish. The primary way to look good is to match your socks with your outfit. However, you don’t have to match the colors for a business casual look.

You need to wear socks with patterns and more colors for a more relaxed and unique look. For instance, you can wear a two-toned shadow-stripped pair of socks with your outfit. The color should directly contrast or complement other hues in your other outfits.

Besides, you can go for brightly colored and patterned socks for a more casual look. The socks will be suitable for men going to informal events like award ceremonies. Novelty socks with funny patterns will be ideal for informal corporate events, weddings, end-of-year parties, exhibitions, and such events.

Most importantly, consider the materials used, quality, durability of the construction, and size when buying your socks. You will want socks that will perfectly fit you, keep your feet warm, and last long.

Are Ties & Bow Ties Business Casual?

Although ties and bowties are mostly considered for accessorizing official outfits, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear them with business casual outfits. A tie or bow tie will enhance your look depending on the event you will be attending. Ensuring that your tie or bowtie matches your trousers or jacket is advisable for a more organized appearance.

Bowties are suitable for grand occasions like weddings, corporate ceremonies, or parties. If you are dressing for an important evening event, a black tuxedo, white shirt, and a black bowtie will do the trick.

A necktie will work with button-up shirts and pants. You can wear a sweater or sweater vest over the shirt on cold days. The neckties should match the pair of trousers and the sweater for a nice look.

For instance, you should wear a navy plaid necktie when wearing stone-grey wool pants, a light blue dress shirt, and a dark navy sweater. When wearing navy-blue chino pants and a blue denim shirt, wearing a blue cotton knit tie will give you a unique business casual appearance.

Accessorize Your Business Casual Outfit

Accessories are a gentleman’s chance to enhance his outfit with some color or coordinate the pieces in a unique manner to fit a personal style. Therefore, it is advisable to keep color combinations and consider the event you will be attending when accessorizing your business casual outfits. Remember to invest in high-quality accessories ranging from belts to ties.

At Family Britches, you can find quality leather belts, socks, and much more. We also offer quality business casual outfits for men. Visit our stores or site to view and buy quality accessories and outfits for men. You can also contact us today for more information.

On the list of potential men’s style icons, who springs to mind for you?

Is it the classics; James Dean, David Bowie, Marlon Brando… or, do you think of more recent icons such as Idris Elba, Zayn Malik or David Beckham?

Most people lean toward one or two favorites because those people have a style that speaks to them. While many manage to somehow look “effortless”, the truth is that quite a bit of effort goes into choosing what they wear in the first place. (And of course, most of these guys have or had the benefit of a personal stylist!).

Here are some popular men’s style icons and our suggestions for getting the look:

Free download: Lessons from stylish men

#1. James Dean: Casual-cool

James Dean’s casual-cool and simple, elegant style represented rebellion for youth of the 1950s. He managed to look effortlessly stylish both on and off-screen and was immortalized for that style due to his untimely death at just 24 years-old.

There are a few, specific clothing items that are always associated with Dean, for example, the black, chunky-knit turtleneck sweater. He sat for an iconic photoshoot with Roy Schatt which was known as “The Torn Sweater.” These images endure today.

What would James Dean pair with that turtleneck? Another classic he wore is blue jeans. We’re not talking about the super-skinny styles often seen today, but more of a classic straight leg in a navy denim. From our catalog, see the Alberto Washed Denim Slim Fit jeans, pictured below.

men's style

Of course, James Dean is also synonymous with the classic white t-shirt. This can also be paired with those jeans for a very simple, yet stylish look. Depending on your body type, a slimmer fit can be a very flattering style, achieving a smooth silhouette. For a true James Dean look, wear with black combat boots or Converse high-tops, like what he wore in Rebel Without a Cause. For a look that will work for many “business casual” offices, wear with your dress shoes.

In terms of outerwear, the bomber jacket worn in Rebel Without a Cause is probably his most infamous. A couple of years ago the jacket (yes, it’s actually red) passed in at auction when it didn’t meet the desired reserve.

This all adds up to a simple, yet casually cool ensemble. In terms of accessories, Dean kept them to a minimum. He could sometimes be seen off-set in a pair of round, tortoiseshell glasses or sunglasses in a classic style.

To get the look, go for classic, clean-cut, tailored items. These pieces should easily mix and match and not look scruffy when put together. The majority of his clothing was quite plain, but the emphasis really was on good fit. This is what really takes an outfit to that “effortless” look.

#2. Idris Elba: Neutral classics

Idris Elba has been acting for at least 25 years, but over the last decade or so has been regularly featured among the most stylish men. One of his style strengths is that he has developed a true sense of style, rather than following the fleeting fashion trends.

If you look at his wardrobe for both casual or formal wear, he has something of a formula for sticking with flattering neutral colors. He also tends to opt for classic, well-fitted styles that will probably still be just as stylish a decade from now.

Elba’s outfits tend to be within a palette of black, grey, white and navy. He wears fitted t-shirts as well as henley shirts, with well-structured outerwear over the top. His trousers or jeans of choice tend to be slim-fitting. He adds interest to his outfits by wearing accessories such as flat caps, or shoes with patterns on them.

Whether out casually or at an event, Elba is often pictured with one item in-particular – a very good coat. It’s a fashion “secret” that many stylish people operate by – if you wear a nice, well-fitted coat, people often don’t notice what else you’re wearing! We would always suggest that you get your coat tailored for the best possible fit. An example from our collection is the Canali Sport Coat, pictured below.

Owning a good, tailored coat is a “secret” of stylish men

#3. Daniel Craig: Suave sophistication

While James Bond is known to be a sophisticated kind of guy, the sixth actor to play him, Daniel Craig has become known as a style sophisticate in his own right.

Of course, suits have to come immediately to mind. Daniel Craig knows how to pull off a stylish red carpet suit without going overboard. He tends to favor well-fitted greys or blacks, sometimes in solid colors and sometimes with a classic pinstripe (see the grey suit he wore to the Spectre premiere, pictured below. Note: the bottom button is undone as it should be!).

Craig tends to keep accessories to a minimum. You might see a well-placed pocket square or a tasteful watch, but he doesn’t add a lot of extra embellishments to a classic suit. His color schemes are simple and smart – like Idris Elba, he largely favors a neutral palette. Get the look from us with a Canali suit and custom tailoring.

When he’s not wearing suits, Daniel Craig is often seen out and about in a pair of relaxed jeans, a fitted t-shirt and an excellent jacket a-la James Dean. He often wears flat caps and is seen in many pictures wearing the same versatile pair of brown dress shoes. Craig has also been known to pull off cardigans well, keeping a masculine aesthetic and managing to avoid looking dowdy. Once again, the key to this is good fit.

#4. Rami Malek: Tailored with flair

Rami Malek has become well-known over the last few years, taking some iconic roles and winning the best actor Oscar for Bohemian Rhapsody in 2019. His look tends to be well-tailored, yet leaves room for individual flair with interesting patterns and statement pieces.

“Polished” is a good description of his predominant look offscreen, but you’ll see him throw in a velvet jacket or a shirt with a bold pattern. He tends to mix and match, sometimes going for bold separates while other times taking a more minimalist look in all-black or dark greys. Below you can see a small sampling of what we mean, taken from a Google image search.

Men’s style

You can get this look by teaming classically tailored trousers and jackets with a well-fitted, bold shirt. Malek is even known to pull off the “air tie” while still looking sharp at formal events.

Another leaf out of Malek’s book is to experiment with textures (without going overboard). For example, teaming a pair of dark grey wool trousers with a silk shirt. He pulls this look off by opting out of any accessories, including a belt.

Lastly, look at separates. This means having an outfit of trousers, jacket, dress shoes and a base layer. A great way to pull this off is to have three of those items providing a backdrop for a standout piece. For example, you might team a tailored, patterned jacket with black shirt, trousers and shoes.

Final thoughts

The men’s style icons we’ve shown here represent a range of style preferences, but they tend to have one thing in common – a focus on good fit.

This characteristic is really what can take any outfit from ordinary to fashion forward. If there’s one thing we would say to men who want to make an effort, it’s to pay attention to fit. Even if you can’t get everything tailored to fit you and color coordination, make good choices with the things you do buy. There is often a tendency for men to buy clothing that is too big.

Take inspiration from these style icons, but experiment to find your own sense of style.

The post Decoding Dress Codes: A Guide to Formal Attire appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
From attending black-tie formal occasions to building the right business-casual wardrobe, you want to look your best. The dress code for any situation is built into the very core of the event. What you wear to a wedding, an opera, or a business meeting will display your mastery of the occasion with style and aplomb. Of course, most people don’t grow up automatically knowing the nuances of formal attire.

If you’re wondering about the subtle differences between black-tie events, formal events, and business casual attire, we are here to help. All you need are a few pointers to help you choose the right suit, dress, or ensemble to make a graceful entrance and look elegantly dressed for any occasion.

This is your guide to formal attire, from black-tie to business casual, including high-end fashion choices for men and women.

Black-Tie Formal Attire

Black-tie events are exceedingly formal. They tend to involve a dress code of tuxedos and long, elegant gowns.

Tuxedos

Gentlemen will wear a tuxedo, featuring a black jacket, vest, and trousers, a pressed white tuxedo dress shirt, and a black bow tie. White-tie events are rare and even more formal, involving a white bow tie and sometimes white tuxedo jackets, pants, and vests.

Not all tuxedos are identical. Most tuxedos have a notch label, but you may notice that some have double-breasted. Your collar may be a traditional notched collar, a peak lapel, or a shawl-style collar.

The accessories worn with a tuxedo can mark your style and make you stand out. These include your choice of shirt, tie, socks, shoes, and cufflinks. Consider the event’s theme and the date when selecting color variations.

Gowns and Women’s Tuxes

Ladies will wear formal gowns at black-tie events, but a women’s tuxedo may also be appropriate, depending on the event and the lady. Gowns tend to be full-length and feature matte or satin fabrics rather than sparkle and flash. Women’s accessories are more noticeable, including a wide range of flattering jewelry, gloves, shoes, shawls or wraps, and handbags to match the occasion.

Footwear

Both men and women should wear polished shoes appropriate for the occasion.

Formal Event Attire

Most formal events call for dark-colored suits, but ladies may explore a wide range of dresses in styles determined by the season and occasion.

Dark Suits

At this level of formality, gentlemen will select a dark suit, but the color depends on their personality and the event theme. Black, charcoal, and navy blue are all traditional colors. Gentlemen can also match their suit color to the event’s theme or the dress color their date will wear.

Lighter-colored suits are more festive and casual and more suitable for daytime events.

Suit vests are optional and dress shirts, while often white, can also be a pale color that compliments the color of the suit. Gentlemen can be more creative with their choice of tie and socks but should wear formal shoes.

Dresses, Ensembles, and Pantsuits

In a formal event, women are invited to wear gowns, dresses, skirt ensembles, or pantsuits. The available styles vary widely, but fabrics should be smooth and pressed.

The length of your dress can be determined by the occasion and the time of day. Cocktail parties and afternoon events can welcome shorter, knee-length skirts, while late-night events are more likely to feature full-length gowns. Ensembles of blouses and skirts are acceptable if they are suitably formal in combination, or a lady can choose a formal pantsuit in a similar style to the gentlemen.

Formal footwear also features a wider range for ladies and may include open-toed shoes of suitable elegance.

Business Casual Attire

Navigating business casual offers the most options, but may also be more challenging. Business-causal has similar rules for men and women regarding color, fabric, and the ensembles that can be put together.

Shirts and Sport Coats

Starting with the shirt, business casual attire can include a wide range of fabrics, provided they are tightly woven and well-pressed. Knits, polos, henleys, dress shirts, and modest blouses are appropriate. You can also make a business-causal look slightly more formal with a structured or unstructured sports coat, a vest, or a formal sweater.

Business Casual Pants

The right pants for business-casual attire include trousers, slacks, and (sometimes) nice blue jeans.

  • Trousers – Trousers are formal pants that one might wear with a suit. They are often wool or a wool blend with a quarter top pocket and a crease down the center seam of the leg.
  • Slacks – Casual slacks tend to be cotton, linen, or a nice synthetic blend. They are more relaxed but with a formal cut and style, often with a quarter-top pocket.
  • Jeans – High-quality blue jeans are sometimes acceptable. Favor darker blues that are undamaged (no holes or wear) and all one color.
  • Skirts – Ladies can combine a blouse or business casual shirt with a nice skirt from knee to ankle length. Pencil and A-line skirts are best, but maxi skirts may be appropriate in some work environments.

Dresses

Ladies may wear a dress in a business-casual setting, provided the dress is suitably business-like. Pressed fabrics and smooth, professional lines are still appropriate, avoiding more casual or festive styles like sundresses, cocktail dresses, or sequins.

Footwear

Your footwear should match the style of your clothes. The color of your shoes should match the color of your belt. Leather and solid synthetic shoes are usually appropriate, but some workplaces allow high-end boots or canvas sneakers. Your socks, however, can be entirely original and reflect your style.

The Formal Styles That Look Best on You

Finding an outfit that suits the occasion’s formality is important, but you should also seek out garments that make you look your best. Coordinate colors that flatter your complexion and garment styles tailored to your body’s natural shape. Everyone can look good in formal and business-casual attire with the right styles and a little custom tailoring.

You can find everything you need to build the perfect business-casual and formal wardrobe with made-to-measure tailored garments at Family Britches.

]]>
Men are now wearing functional but stylish vests for business, casual, and recreational occasions in all seasons of the year. Knowing what function you want the vest to provide, the right style to wear, and how to pair it with other pieces of clothing will make an investment in vests worthwhile.

There are stylish-looking vests that can be as versatile as all-season vests. There are also more suited for colder winter or wet weather like rain or snow. Examples of the vests that we’ll be talking about include the following:

  • Quilted vests
  • Baffle vests
  • Lightweight vests
  • Corduroy vests
  • Quilted fleece vests
  • Plaid wool vests

Let’s look at how you can wear each vest in what season and how to style it into your ensemble for the occasion you’d like to wear it.

All-Seasons Vest

The best all-season vest for men has to be versatile enough to be worn with a short sleeve shirt and shorts on cool summer nights or layered with other clothing when the seasons change from cooler to colder weather.

reversible quilted vest is the best example of a vest you can wear for any season. It has knit fabric on one side, while the reversible side is made of a nylon and spandex blend.

It is moisture-wicking and breathable enough for cool summer nights. However, it can also be layered over any style of a long-sleeve shirt while being layered under blazers, jackets, and coats, depending on the season and occasion you wear it. When encountering wet and cold weather in the winter and spring, the outer layer of the nylon and spandex blend material will protect against inclement weather.

Spring

As the season is turning from colder to cooler weather, but with more rain, you will need a lightweight or baffle, water-resistant, and windproof vest. To protect yourself from the elements in the spring, you will more likely wear a nylon quilted vest or a baffle vest layered under a light jacket, windbreaker, or a cotton and nylon blend overshirt.

For a business-casual look approach, you can layer a dress shirt or collared shirt under a lightweight quilted vest. Add a tie if the occasion calls for one. For a more casual look, layer cotton long-sleeve shirts or sweatshirts under them.

Summer

A lightweight, breathable vest is best for those cool summer nights when carrying a jacket is not an option. Layering it over a T-shirt and wearing shorts makes you comfortable while enjoying summer night activities. However, wearing it without a shirt is not a recommended style look.

Autumn

The fall season is much like spring, except there’s usually less rain. This means waterproofing is not as essential in this season. However, cooler weather will prevail. A quilted vest with a warm fleece interior might be the best choice for this season.

Layer this vest over a collared long-sleeve, flannel, or sweatshirt for added warmth. You can also layer the vest under a blazer if you’re going for a business casual approach.

Winter

Quilted fleece vests, plaid wool vests, and corduroy vests will keep you warm in the winter. The mid-weight quilted fleece vest has three layers for texture and warmth but is not bulky. You can still layer over and under the vest while still looking stylish.

You can choose from quilted plaid wool and corduroy vests instead of the quilted fleece vest. Also, you can layer these warm vests over sweaters for a business casual look or over flannel or sweatshirts for weekend outdoor activities. If you need protection from the snow, layer a water-repellent quilted, puffer, or parka coat over the top.

Functional and Stylish Vests for All Seasons

Vests are not seasonal and can be worn for all types of occasions and events in any season of the year. From the warmest vests to the lightweight ones, which also have moisture-wicking and breathability properties, you can wear vests comfortably in all seasons of the year. In addition, vests are versatile for business, casual, or recreational events because of their ability to be layered with all kinds of styles and looks.

Here at Family Britches, we can help tailor a look that is unique to you. If you’re still not sure how a vest can fit into your wardrobe, we offer personal and virtual stylist services to help you look your best. So contact us for a style that’s uniquely yours.

The post A Complete Guide to Stylish Menswear for Beach Vacations appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
Visiting the beach for men used to be as simple as old flip-flops, a stained tee-shirt, and baggy shorts before stylists upgraded to resort wears. Nowadays, even though vacation may be a time to relax and recharge, preparing for it may get you frazzled. You still want to hit the sand and soak up in the sun in style. Packing a vacation outfit does not have to be a stressful task. Check out our guide for menswear for beach vacations.

Choose Versatile Outfits

It is essential to pick outfits that can work well for you at the beach and in the evening. Whether you will be enjoying a resort or a day trip in your car, you may not get the chance to change to more formal wear.

Tailored shorts in comfort fabrics and colors paired with tee shirts is a good idea for a more casual look for daytime. A windbreaker or sweatshirt paired with lightweight cotton and linen pants will do for formal events. Long-sleeved linen shirts could be rolled up during the day and rolled down in the evening.

Men’s primary concern when rocking the beach will be what they have on the bottom. A nice pair of trunks with more street style than a bare swim trunk will be a good choice. When you tire of the sun and want to grab lunch at the bar, pair it with a shirt, and you are good to go.

To remain stylish, you will need a good choice for the top. Neutral and pastel trunks are easier to match with striped or printed tops. A breezy lightweight bottom-down with suitable material can be used as an open jacket when the weather gets chilly. Throw it on with a shirt or a tank top, preferably of plain color.

A long-sleeved rash guard will be a good pair for your swim trunk. Apart from protecting your skin from surf rash and sun rays, it is stylish, more so if it got a hoodie. You can rock it off the beach too.

A short-sleeved bottom-up can be unbuttoned when you are out on the beach and buttoned when getting a break from the sun. Match your palm-printed trunk swims with short sleeve cotton knits in solids or patterns for a more beach look.

Consider Fast-Drying Material for Menswear for Beach Vacations

Apart from carrying your towel to the beach to keep yourself dry, you need to consider a breathable type of material for your beach wear. Comfortable and fast-drying footwear, fast-drying fabrics, and silky materials are easy to breathe in and suitable for going within and out of water.

It is uncomfortable to stay with wet and heavily soaked swimwear even after leaving the water. As much as you want to wear your best trunk, make sure it is made of a fast-drying fabric.

Go for Bright Colors

Usually, light color is said to reflect heat. You will need a crisp white shirt to prevent hyperthermia when under the sun for long hours.

Brighter colors also have the magic they create when hit by sunlight. A yellow or orange color trunk will dazzle and look pleasant under the sun. Beach colors such as beige and sky blue would be a great choice.

Have Control of a Classic Look for Menswear for Beach Vacations

As a man of style, you want to try some old yet still fashionable outfits. Consider neutral colors like pearl white and pebble grey to be safe. Personal stylist services by Family Britches may come through for you if you need to look good but do not know how to do it.

Print shirts with long and short sleeves can be worn tucked in or out for a simple and stylish classic. Leather loafers will complete the look and help you navigate the dune without struggle. You can easily slip them off to take a stroll by the beach once you leave the party.

Know Your Body Type

Getting the right cut and fit makes even the most casual outfit look great on you. If you are slightly built, consider swimwear with slimmer legs and horizontally striped trunks. They can help you look more masculine. And avoid vertical stripes if you do not want to look slimmer. If you have chunky thighs or wider hips, go for board shorts in solid colors. Avoid speedos and briefs as a tall man, they give you a boyish look.

Take Care of Your Skin Tone

When you show a lot of skin, consider if your outfit goes with your skin tone. Pale skin will look great with muted shades of pink, blue and green. While rich khakis, rusts, and oranges go well with olive skin. For darker skin tones, neon bright will give you the glow you need.

Do you work remotely?

If so, not having to go into an office every day can lead to certain wardrobe habits (or freedoms – depending on how you want to look at it!). It’s easy to end up with a casual wear wardrobe when you don’t have to dress to impress every day.

However, what happens if you need to go into an office, meet with a client or represent the company at an event? For a lot of remote-based workers, this will trigger a certain amount of anxiety over what they’re going to wear.

Then there’s another potential hazard of remote work – the video meeting. You might think no one will notice your shorts if you’re dressed professionally on top, but what if you need to get up to fetch something during the meeting?

Every closet should contain a few well-made pieces that will be acceptable to wear when you need to make an impression. Here are a few tips for putting together a professional closet for the home-based professional:

Why dress up when you work from home? Download key tips here

Choosing the right cuts and fabrics

One thing we hear often is concern from people who want to make sure they get some longevity from their clothing. After all, if you don’t have to wear your professional pieces very often, you want to make sure that they aren’t dated or in poor condition.

A good strategy to follow is to choose clothing made from good quality fabrics and in more “timeless” cuts and patterns. That seasonal pattern in a bold color? Not a great idea if you don’t want to date your clothing when you wear it next year.

Part of the problem in recent years has been “fast, cheap fashion,” clothes that are made with a priority of quick production, rather than being built to last. If you don’t want your clothing to look worn within a short period, you need to look for better-quality construction and fabrics, and yes, you will usually pay more for them.

What makes for better quality? Here are some quick tips:

  • Check the label for the fabric type. Cotton, wool, silk or linen are all extracted from plants or animals rather than man-made. There are a lot of synthetic choices out there, and some will add a certain quality when blended with the natural fabric (for example, stretch), however not all are created equally. For example, natural fibres usually improve with wear and laundering, whereas blends might stretch or shrink at different rates, altering the appearance of the garment.
  • Touch the fabric. You’re looking for smooth, soft and substantial fabric rather than rough or overly thin. An exception to this is the density of the knit – a fabric can be thin and lightweight, but still have tightly-packed threads. Hold the fabric up to the light to inspect the density of the weave.
  • For knits, you could try stretching the fabric just a little, in an inconspicuous spot. It should bounce back to its original shape – if it doesn’t, it won’t when you wear it either.
  • Look at the seams. Stitches should be even and closely spaced, while the seam should sit flat to the fabric.
  • Overall construction should be sturdy. For example, no fraying button holes. Dress shirts should have interfacing to create a stiff collar and cuffs, as should the waistband on dress pants.
  • Get your clothes tailor-made, or fitted by a tailor. Professional clothes should always fit you well.

For a reliable “just in case” professional wardrobe, remote workers should aim for a few classics

Remote wardrobe must-haves

If you’re based remotely, what you really need is a good “just in case” closet. This should consist of a few key pieces that will be appropriate for different situations, rather than a full professional wardrobe that someone who works in an office will need.

The basic remote professional wardrobe should have:

  1. A good quality blazer. This can be worn with seasonally appropriate trousers and a dress shirt, with or without a tie. Look for a tailored blazer in a good-quality fabric and timeless cut. (For example, look at the cut of this Canali blazer in crease-resistant wool). Get a classic color, such as black, charcoal, grey or navy.
  2. A deconstructed sport coat. What is this exactly? Deconstructed coats have no canvas layer or lining, whereas blazers with full construction have three layers. They have a softer shape and are very versatile for more “business casual” situations. Wear them with jeans and business casual accessories, or with dress trousers for more formal occasions. As an example, take a look at the casual sport coat ensemble below.

Sport coat multi-layer ensemble with zip hooded sweatshirt

  3. Trousers. These should be in an updated fit (nothing baggy – you’re not in an 80’s movie!). Your trousers should also be in a seasonally appropriate fabric. In temperate climates you might get away with keeping one pair, but if you have large seasonal differences, you may want two pairs – one lighter and one heavier weight.
  4. At least two dress shirts. You can wear these with a tie for formal wear, or without if the situation is more business casual. These can be worn untucked with your jeans, or tucked in to formal trousers. In either case, shirts should be well-fitted and made from a crease-resistant fabric.
  5. A tie – something that will go well with your shirt and trousers.
  6. A nice outerwear piece. For example, you could consider a vest in the fall, or any other type of outerwear that is more appropriate for a professional setting than a weekend coat. A nice, knit sweater can also finish an outfit well – take a look at the Peru Unlimited Alpaca Wool sweater as an example.

How to keep your professional clothes looking good

You don’t always wear your professional clothes as a remote-based worker, so it’s important to take some steps to preserve the clothes when you aren’t wearing them.

Here are a few things you can do:

  • Pay attention to the laundering tag! Many people are in the habit of throwing clothes into a regular wash cycle then tossing them in the dryer – a lot of clothes should never be put in the dryer.
  • Launder washer-safe dark clothing inside out. This helps to preserve the dark shade.
  • Extend the time between washes if possible. Outerwear doesn’t usually need washing after every wear, and washing is tough on clothes.
  • Get suits, blazers or sport coats dry cleaned as needed.
  • Brush off any particles that may be on your clothing. Hang it on a good-quality wooden hanger.
  • Use a cloth cover. These allow air to circulate even if your clothing is stored.

It’s worth dressing up when you work from home – here’s why

Final thoughts

Even if you work remotely most of the time, you don’t want to be caught short when the need to be dressed professionally arises! It’s important to keep a few essential pieces that will take you from a meeting to an event.

Look for good quality cuts, construction and fabric over cheap, “fast fashion,” especially if you want to make the right impression when you do step out. Better quality clothing may cost you more, but it will also last you longer, especially if you have opted for classic styling.

Just a few key pieces in your wardrobe mean that you don’t need to worry about meetings (or those video calls!)

The post Forget Fast Fashion: How to Build a Wardrobe That Lasts appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
In the world of fashion. There are two approaches to building a wardrobe. You can chase the latest trends, tossing out clothes when they are “out of season,” or slowly and thoughtfully building a wardrobe of timeless styles that will make you look good for years.

Building a wardrobe that lasts is all about forgetting fast fashion. You can pick up a few pieces from the latest designer releases. Your choices should be based on what they add to your overall wardrobe instead of mindlessly following trends and throwing them away just as quickly.

Leaving Behind Fast Fashion

Fast Fashion is the idea that you should always wear the latest and abandon styles just as quickly. It is the idea that you should never wear the same dress to two different parties, or be seen in a print that was popular last year. Fortunately, most people mature past fast fashion as they mature gracefully into adulthood. Fast fashion may be fine for teenagers who are growing so quickly that they phase through clothing anyway. However, the value of a more timeless and lasting wardrobe comes with maturity.

Sustainability Concerns

In addition to the inconvenience and expense of fast fashion, it’s also important to remember that throwing away out-of-season clothes is wasteful. In a time when sustainability is a paramount priority, finding clothes that last is far more important than wearing only the runway latest.

Building a Timelessly Flattering Wardrobe

The best strategy for any adult looking to build an elegant yet functional wardrobe is to plan for the long term. You are looking not for the latest trends, but for timeless styles where every piece flatters your shape and complexion. Also, you can combine pieces in different ways to create unique outfits that all reflect your style.

Timeless wardrobe selection involves more conservative choices, such as button-down shirts and knit sweaters that combine well with other layers. Women benefit from a few skirts and blouses that can make any outfit a little more dressy. Also, the dresses that never go out of style. Men and women benefit from form-flattering trousers for a business-casual look and a few pairs of nice jeans for well-dressed adventures.

Dress shirts are a staple for men and make nice business-casual overshirts for women. But you should also keep a few nice-quality T-shirts and polos for casual events where you still want to look your best.

Custom Tailored Clothing That Lasts for Years

Another important consideration is the quality of each piece you add to your wardrobe. High-quality fabrics, design, and construction of each piece of clothing will make a difference in how well it holds up over the years. You may wear a shirt of tightly woven fabric and well-constructed seams a few times a year for a decade or more. On the other hand, a tissue-thin event t-shirt may fall apart after just a few wearings.

Even lightweight women’s clothing can last when you consider the quality.

There are three ways to ensure your clothing is well-built and will become a long-term part of your wardrobe. The first is to avoid fast-fashion pieces where the manufacturers know you will throw away the piece in a season or two. These tend to have lighter stitching and are often made of the flimsiest material that will support the style.

The second method is to touch and examine clothing bought off the rack. Your hands can often tell you more than your eyes in terms of the quality of fabric and seams.

The third is to have your clothing put together by a custom tailor known for their quality work.

Building a Wardrobe One Piece or Outfit at a Time

Building a wardrobe that is built to last is not assembled in a single shopping trip or fashion season. It comes together over time and is usually most successful with trained sales associates. They can help you select options that are best suited to your needs, body type, and coloring. You may discover the perfect-fitting polo and buy five of them in different colors to populate casual outfits for years. Or you may have one formal outfit custom-tailored. Once that outfit joins your wardrobe, you can pull it out when you’re ready to impress at future formal occasions. You can also mix the pieces to enhance other formal ensembles.

Men often discover the perfect brand and size for daily dress shirts and slacks. Women often select one timeless and flattering piece from each fashion season and combine it with many different outfits in the future. This has been a hot trend for a short time and an elegant addition to their wardrobe for years.

The key is to learn how to identify quality, what looks and feels best on you, and assemble your wardrobe based on those values. In a few years, you will have a comprehensive wardrobe of timeless and flattering clothing. This will represent your style and look good compared to any fast fashion trend.

5 Ways to Style a Blazer Sweater

When it comes to dressing for work or a special event, the blazer sweater is a great way to look sharp and stylish. Unlike the traditional blazer, it can provide a more casual and comfortable look, while still maintaining the professional and sophisticated style. Here are 5 great ways to style your new blazer sweater:

1. Start With a Classic

One of the most popular and timeless looks is pairing it with a white dress shirt and trousers. This look is simple, yet still polished and professional.

2. Add Texture

Layer it over a plain tee and jeans for an easy look that’s comfortable and stylish. To add texture, opt for a pair of corduroy trousers or a textured shirt instead of a traditional dress shirt.

3. Go Bold

For an unexpected twist, pair it with bright colors and patterns such as a striped shirt or colorful pants. Doing so will instantly add a fun and modern vibe to your look.

4. Bring In Some Color

A blazer sweater can also be used as a layering piece for adding a pop of color to an outfit. Try throwing on a patterned scarf in an eye-catching hue or donning a brightly colored knit hat.

5. Dress It Up

If you want to take your look up a notch, you can pair your blazer sweater with dressier items such as slacks, a dress shirt, and loafers. Adding some accessories like a pocket square or tie can elevate the look even more.

No matter what style you’re going for, with these tips you’ll be sure to look great in your new blazer sweater! Check out Family Britches for a great selection of blazer sweaters in different colors and styles.

Mix and Match – Creating Endless Possibilities With a Blazer Sweater

With a blazer sweater, you can mix and match different elements to create unique and fashionable outfits. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

  1. Try pairing it with distressed jeans and a graphic tee for a casual weekend look. Finish off with a pair of sneakers or sandals for added comfort.
  2. For an effortless business casual ensemble, style it with dress pants, a crisp white shirt, and loafers. Add a patterned scarf for a pop of color.
  3. Need something cute and comfy for a day out? A blazer sweater looks great with a pleated skirt and a basic tank top. Accessorize with a pair of ankle boots and a statement necklace.
  4. Make a bold statement by layering it over a jumpsuit or romper. Add a belt to give it a more polished look. Complete the outfit with your favorite pair of heels.
  5. If you’re looking for something special for an evening event, try wearing it with a bodycon dress or skater dress. Accessorize with a pair of pumps, an elegant necklace, and a clutch purse.

Why are sweaters a vital aspect of any man’s wardrobe? Sweaters are the perfect interface between a casual and formal style. The versatility of sweaters allows you to pair them with blazers and slacks or denim and a t-shirt. But sweaters come in different shapes and sizes. This article focuses on the different sweater neck styles for men and provides a guide on how to choose them. Keep reading to find out more!

Crew Neck Sweaters

These are among the most commonly rocked sweater styles by men. They are also one of the simplest. Crew neck sweaters have a round neckline with a thin band of ribbing that slightly increases their thickness. The crew neck was first made to strengthen the shoulder pads of football players and keep them from rubbing against their skin.

Crew neck sweaters are good-looking, and you can pair them with different clothing. But, they are not ideal for pairing with neckties.

Quarter Zip Sweater Neck Styles

The truth is that everyone loves versatility, especially when it comes to the clothes we wear. Well, the thick fabric of quarter zip sweaters makes them ideal for cool, chilly days and a must-have all year round. You can choose to rock these pullovers with your best dress pants when hitting the golf course or opt for a totally casual look. Regardless, you need at least a one-quarter zip pullover in your wardrobe.

Quarter zips also have a durable and high-performance fabric that makes them the right choice to pair with any outfit. Their comfy nature makes them wearable on any occasion, be it in the office, golf course, or everywhere in between.

V-Neck Sweaters

V-neck sweaters provide the obvious answer to the setbacks of the crew neck sweaters. This is because their neckline usually has a V-shaped design at the front. The advantage of this V-shape design is that it leaves room to enable you to wear a tie.

These are your ideal type of sweaters if you love a casual look that allows room for neckties and collared shirts.

Turtleneck Sweaters

Turtleneck sweaters offer a classic style with a tall collar that usually folds on itself. You can also leave the collar unfolded and doubled over, making it form a thick band around the neck.

Turtlenecks are perfect for cold weather because of their thick nature. They also make an ideal dressed-down replacement for the typical collars that tend to face downwards, as mostly seen on dress shirts.

The doubling over on turtleneck sweaters adds bulk. This makes them suitable layering items. It is easy to confuse turtlenecks with roll necks. But you can tell them apart by their fit and fold.

Roll-Neck Sweaters

These types of sweaters usually resemble turtlenecks that are baggier. A roll-neck sweater would partially cover your face when fully stretched upwards. But it has a broader opening and an unfastened knit, creating room for a loose-fitting roll around the lower neck.

A good and comfortable fit would be a narrow roll neck with a broad opening. This is because it is easy to layer.

Notch Neck Sweaters

The notch neck closely resembles the V-neck. It has a simple round opening all-round but has a minor V-shaped cutout in front, just below your chin. The notch neck offers a more casual style made to add some visibility to the standard pullover sweater.

Their design allows more muscular men to flash their well-built upper chests. You will mostly see this design on the lightest and tightest knit sweaters. The most common are brighter ones, which younger men prefer to rock with trendy outfits.

Cowl Sweater Neck Styles

Cowl necks are usually at the extreme end of baggy necks. The tube of fabric around the sweater’s neck opening is broad and soft. This means that you don’t need to fold it but rather slump it down into a pile of unfastened cloth.

Cowl neck sweaters allow for a baggy, rumpled, and relaxed look. They are perfect for cold weather, giving you a very warm feeling for the upper body. Cowl necks are malleable, allowing you to shift and flop the pile around, spread, and bundle.

Shawl Neck Sweaters

Shawl neck sweaters have a wide collar around their necks that is usually turned over. It is narrow at the front around the chest area, a feature mostly witnessed on cardigans or half-zip sweaters.

Shawl necks exhibit the traits of a suit but retain the softness of a sweater. They are a beneficial top layer ideal to put on in casual scenarios. Shawl necks also allow you to wear a tie, while denim can tone them down into basic indoor wear.

Polo Collar Sweaters

Most people associate “polo sweaters” with pullovers designed by Ralph Lauren. Even so, there are some light-knit sweaters with a turndown collar known as polo collar sweaters. They come with a one-to-three button placket that is similar to that of a polo shirt.

Polo collar sweaters are usually lightweight. This makes them ideal for the summer weather, particularly on the tennis court. You can also layer them under heavier sweater styles during cold months.

Business attire encompasses many different elements. As we return to our offices, you may be wondering which work outfits are best to wear now that the pandemic has changed much of the workplace dress code.

First and foremost, check your company’s policies and review your closet options. You may still be on Zoom calls but maximizing your appearance in the office is more important than ever. Below is a primer on what you should have available in the proper styles and fits.

At Least Two Suits for Work Outfits

Suits might seem like an outdated office style, but they’re still relevant in many occupations today. If you’re the type that attends executive meetings and handles formal matters, a canvas front with hand tailoring will help you pull off a formal business look.

Pick two high-quality suits for different office occasions. One should have a solid plain color like blue or gray, and the other can be slightly panache for a more diverse look.Lastly, decide whether you want the suits ready-made or custom-tailored to your body specifications.

Vest and Sweaters

Vests and sweaters are the complete men’s ensembles in less formal settings. In terms of functionality, they both keep you warm and, style-wise, help break the monotony of the everyday business traditional look.

There are different types of men’s sweaters, but the gold standard remains cashmere crew sweaters. These types are light but warm and can be worn on almost any occasion, especially the solid, neutral colors.

Even so, don’t be afraid to have a variety of sweaters at your disposal. Some other good options to have are:

  • Men’s cardigan
  • Turtleneck sweaters
  • Polo sweaters

Casual Business Attire

Most people became used to wearing comfortable clothes during the pandemic, and it’s now a growing culture in the workplace. “It’s the evolution of business casual,” says Loretta Choy, the Chief Merchandise Officer at Stitch Fix, a personal shopping and styling service.

Companies have modernized workplace dress code policies to ensure workers are comfortable performing at their best. Some of the fashionable business comfort outfits today include:

  • Jeans coordinated with long-sleeved sports shirts
  • Cotton slacks paired with neutral sweaters
  • Vests and unconstructed jackets
  • Short-sleeved knits layered below sweaters
  • Loafers, Oxfords, or any other comfortable shoe

Seasonally Appropriate Outfits for Work Outfits

The trick to excellent office dressing is not to be overly creative with your outfits. In addition, being aware of the different seasons in the workplace can help avoid too much judgment for your dressing style from bosses and colleagues. In this regard, have the following in mind:

  • Coordinate shirt and tie: Pair solid shirts with a tie that has a background hint of the same color. Avoid pairing solid-colored shirts with solid-colored ties. Also, know when to wear shirts with ties and when not to.
  • Collar style is distinctive: There are about 19 collar types, each with distinctive qualities. Knowing the kind you want is instrumental in determining the shirts you’ll wear to work on different occasions.
  • Incorporate sport coat options: Your outfit shouldn’t be too formal or deviate too much to the casual side. Sportcoats bring a sense of both professionalism and comfort at the same time. They also come in many patterns and colors and are durable.
  • Complement the style of the coats and any accessories: If you wear jeans, cotton on blends, or wool to work, pair it with a coat and matching accessories for a complete look. If you go for a sports coat, ensure that the trousers fit the overall style. Wearing pull-on pants will not cut it for most outfits.

Mix and Match Color Patterns

Color is an essential component in almost every office. Besides reflecting the brand presence and creating a sense of connection, color is a form of personal expression in the workplace.

Today, organizations are more lenient on what colors one can wear to work. However, avoid head-to-toe colors that may cause too much distraction. Instead, pop of color here and there in your outfit. Muted combinations are more appropriate for a staid office environment.

For example, you can pair a neutral suit with a bright-colored tie or get some colorful shoes to wear with more casual outfits.

Look Like the Best Version of Yourself With Our Work Outfits

Today, offices are less conservative about dress codes, so you shouldn’t be afraid to try out new styles. However, try to lean on the side of caution, especially if your organization’s culture doesn’t allow too much casual dressing. It’s better to look clean and professional than creative and rugged.

With a great suit comes confidence and respect both from the man in the mirror and the people you meet. However, even the finest suits in the market will not be good if they fail to fit you well. Whether slim, chunky, short, or tall, the secret is knowing how to dress your body type. Once you know your body shape, you can easily choose the perfect suit. We have outlined different types of men’s bodies and given tips on the styles that look best for each frame.

The Perfect Suit for a Rectangle

If your shoulders, waist, and hips are in one like, you have a rectangular body shape. Men with this body type tend to be tall, thin with long arms and legs. The goal is to make your shoulders appear wider and slightly beef you up without resorting to protein shakes.

This calls for identifying the model and manufacturer that suits you best. At Family Britches, we accommodate your wishes with our custom clothing made to your measurements. Here is what you need:

  • Wear suits and jackets that have more padding on the shoulders
  • Select a fitted appearance with tapered sides and back for your waist to appear narrow.
  • Go for single-breasted suits to draw the eye upward. The double-breasted suits will define the rectangle more since they draw the eye outward.
  • Add layers for more bulk.
  • You can wear a vest or a sweater over a shirt,
  • Wear dress shirts with bold colors and prints.
  • Avoid horizontal stripes as they emphasize your width, just like double-breasted suits.

Triangle Shape

Men with triangular body shapes have narrow shoulders and larger waists and hips. If you have this shape, you should go for suits that decrease the effect of a disproportionately larger lower half. We have designs for men who need to look good but don’t know exactly how to do it. If this is your body type, here is what you need for the perfect suit:

  • Broaden your shoulders by choosing suit coats and jackets that are more structured.
  • Go for fitted single-breasted suits to draw the eye upward and have room around the waist.
  • Choose dark-colored suits with subtle prints like pinstripes or small checks.
  • Avoid belts with fancy buckles, as they will make your lower half more noticeable.
  • Wear pants with slightly tapered legs. Skinny or fitted slacks make your midsection appear larger.
  • Make striped shirts your friend. Horizontal ones widen your chest area, while vertical ones make you look taller.
  • Avoid tightly knit sweaters and shirts. They cling to the broad part of your body, drawing unwanted attention.

The Inverted Triangle

Do you have broad shoulders and chest, a long torso, and a smaller waist and hips? Well, you have an inverted triangle body shape. Your muscles look great, but you have trouble getting clothes to fit. You can achieve a perfect fit with the help of our old master tailors. Here is what you need:

  • Avoid wearing structured jackets and suit coats. You have broad shoulders that do not need padding. The double-breasted jackets are perfect for you, as they broaden your torso, making it appear more proportional to your shoulders.
  • Wear skinny ties and narrow lapels to draw less attention to the chest and shoulders
  • Go for fitted suits but be sure they provide a room to move comfortably and spread your wings.
  • Select pants with straight legs to balance your physique. Skinny pants tend to highlight the disproportion between your lower half and the shoulders.
  • Choose horizontal stripes to match your wide shoulders and broaden your torso.

The Perfect Suit for an Oval

You can easily spot a man with an oval body shape. Their midsection is broader than the shoulders and hips. Most of them have disproportionately slim short arms and legs. You need not worry if you are having a hard time finding clothes to fit in. We have models designed for your comfort. What you need:

  • Wear structured jackets and suit coats to broaden your shoulders.
  • Slightly tapered single-breasted suits are a perfect choice for you as they make you appear taller and less hefty.
  • Go for solid dark fabrics or colors with vertical stripes or small patterns. Horizontal stripes are not for you.
  • Wear slightly fitted pants but not tight, enough to drape well on your waist.
  • Choose dress shirts with a wide color spread to accommodate a large tie knot.
  • Avoid bulky sweaters and oversized clothing as they make you look bigger. You can wear casual shirts outside the pants as long as they cover the back and the belly without being tight or long.

The Trapezoid

Men with trapezoid shapes have proportional body parts. They have broad shoulders, trimmed waist, and narrow hips. The good news is that you can wear almost any style if this is your body type.

  • Play around with patterns, styles, and cuts. Flaunt your athletic body in a suit that is fitted and slim.
  • You can handle bold patterns and colors that other body shapes cannot, but ensure you stick to dark pants to keep your body proportional.
  • Emphasize your chest with horizontal stripes and elongate your frame with vertical stripes.

The transition from summer to cooler fall and winter weather must be coupled with various outfit changes. Generally, fall fashions are the most crucial this time of the year, making it a veritable fashion playground to combine different pieces from various seasons into your wardrobe. Fashion might not work for everyone, but do not worry since the simplest fashion outfit idea is incorporating most of the summer’s greatest hits into your fall collection.

Fall is usually associated with warm colors, colder temperatures, and an entirely confusing wardrobe. You might often go too hot in warm and heavy coats or too cold in short sleeves. Therefore, it is wise to invest in solid fall outfits rather than sweating in your winter clothes or freezing in summer clothes during fall.

Family Britches focuses on the consumer experience by bringing a personal touch through individual consultations and custom-made outfits. During this fall, we aim to offer our clients the best professional outfits that can work both for in-person and on-video jobs. Read on to have a fashion idea of what we have in store for you this season.

In-Person Office Outfit Ideas for Fall Fashions

In-person work means you will be out there experiencing the weather as it comes. Therefore, there is a need to take note of certain factors, such as the unpredictable fall weather dynamics. Family Britches factors this out, and the outfit ideas highlighted below are a mixture of professional thoughts from our experienced personnel.

1. Layering Is Vital

Fall usually has a combination of cool and warm weather. Cooler weather implies wearing coats, jackets, and sweaters, while warmer weather requires wearing thin layers. For clients to tackle the weather dynamics during fall, layering will be ideal since it makes it easy to beat the unpredictable fall weather.

You can consider wearing several thin layers rather than one thick coat. Doing this will enhance your manly looks rather than making you look like a bundle. A more stylish approach can be taken for your layering strategy by focusing on a maximum of three layers. Some of the pieces that can be used to layer your office look include:

  • Work shirts and button-down shirts for both men and females
  • Dress shirts for females
  • Vests and waistcoats for females
  • Long-sleeve t-shirts
  • Sweaters and cardigans
  • Henleys
  • Scarves

2. Textured Fabrics

Textured fabrics are also a good idea for Fall in-office outfits. They will help in keeping your look exciting and easy on the eyes. Solid colors always look perfect on textured fabrics, specifically for corduroy, tweed, and woolen knits, to give a nice and autumnal feel. This fashion look is a bonus since most textured fabrics will keep you warm on cool days without having to throw on an overcoat.

3. Opt for Woolen Slacks Over Cotton

This fall’s significant challenge might be how to warm your legs while going to the office. However, the ideal way to keep your lower body comfortable and warm during this season is to consider wool slacks. These slacks hold heat, and their stouter weaves act as sweaters for your legs. They also have a range of muted dark colors and textured weaves, making them the perfect natural fall outfit for an office look.

Remote Work Outfit Ideas for Fall Fashions

Working from home calls for a trendy and comfy outfit look. Some of the ideas to incorporate during this fall that will look perfect on you while working on the video are as follows:

4. Breaking the Heavy-Duty Underclothes

A pair of light, breathable wool slacks, over insulated long johns, can work well this fall. Such pants can keep you warm at home from the outer wool layer and the insulating underlayer.

5. Consider Warm Earthy Fall Color Palettes

During fall, leaves will change colors, and it is only wise for your wardrobe to change colors. The fall season brings a touch of muted and solid colors. You can consider dark shades of green, orange, or any simple solid color scheme. Vary the colors while wearing three to four color pieces that overlap to establish a significant pattern.

6. Knitwear

For the knitwear, ensure they are well-fitting and not baggy; thin and smooth knits are also ideal for layering. Since you will be working on the video, you do not want to feel so official since you are at home. Therefore a lightweight sweater can give a more casual-official look. A thick cardigan will be the best choice for colder temperatures. Some men’s knitwear options include sweaters, mock button necks, sweater vests, and half-zip mock necks.

What Might Work Both for In-Person and Remote Work

Given the variety of options for in-person and on-video work outfits, some of the outfits that can work well for both situations include; the knitwear option, the warm earthy color palette option, layering, and the textured fabric option.

Staying fashionable in extreme weather is always hard, especially when it is cold. The need for warmer and heavier clothing takes precedence during the colder months. It is crucial to have a little outfit inspiration for such seasons. In this article, we have provided essential tips on how men can dress for cold weather without sacrificing style. Keep reading to learn more.

Invest in the Best Quality Fabrics for Cold Weather

Fabrics are a huge game-changer for keeping warm during the cold seasons. While some men forego quality for affordability, it is crucial to get the best quality fabrics. There is a good reason why cashmere sweaters are more expensive compared to other blends. Invest in at least one or two quality knits and woolen sweaters that are able to keep you warm by trapping heat. Heavy knit sweaters are stylish and are great when layering.

Cotton is also the backbone of the clothing industry and makes the majority of apparel. Men’s cotton flannel shirts are great for cold seasons as they are able to trap some heat. Not only are they relatively soft and easy to clean, but also inexpensive and durable.

Wear Insulated Jackets

Wondering what insulated jackets are? Well, these are coats filled with insulating materials to keep you warm during cold temperatures. They can be worn as an outer layer or underneath a waterproof jacket when it’s raining. There are three broad varieties of insulated jackets, synthetic insulation, down insulation, or a combination of the two. All these are stylish and able to trap enough heat.

Note that insulated jackets are not a replacement for waterproof jackets unless specified. Heavy rain may compromise the insulating properties, which makes them ideal for dry or a little damp cold weather.

Cover Your Head, Neck, and Hands in Cold Weather

While most men often ignore this, protecting your head, neck and hands is essential. Failure to cover them makes us feel cold all over the body. Here is what you need to wear to cover these parts.

The Head

You can use a watch cap to protect your head from cold. For instance, you can choose one from knit fabrics in neutral colors like black or grey.

The Neck

Wearing a scarf is a great way to protect yourself from the cold while staying stylish. Scarves come in different sizes and lengths. You can tie them around your neck in various styles based on your preferences.

The Hands

The obvious choice for keeping your hands warm is wearing gloves. While most men’s gloves are made of leather alone, they are not practical in the cold. We recommend investing in gloves with in-built insulation and longer cover up to the wrist area.

Learn the Art of Layering for Cold Weather

Learning the basics of layering is very important to anyone passionate about style and fashion. Appropriate layering from an aesthetic standpoint involves blending different warm fabrics into a seamless and stylish look. The following guidelines will help you achieve this.

Each Layer Should Be Something You Can Wear on Its Own

If you feel uncomfortable wearing a specific piece in your ensemble alone, it will be inappropriate when layering. The exceptions here could be the undergarments, but anything visible should be worn on a standalone basis or with a jacket.

Ensure the Outer Hems Are Longer Than the Inner Ones

When your outer hems fail to cover the inner ones, you risk looking confused. Imagine your dress shirt sticking out from your under-sweater. It does not seem right! Always wear your attire appropriately for an outstanding look.

Scale Your Patterns Progressively

Pattern scaling is among the best ways to layer. You can start with the small patterns to large ones, e.g., wearing a micro-checkered shirt and then a solid sweater or overcoat.

Limit Your Ensemble to at Most Two Colors

When you choose to dress boldly, avoid too many colors. The secret is to accentuate your subtle or neutral tones with at most two louder colors. This gives you a professional look for any occasion.

The post Men’s Athleisure For Work appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
The American workplace has become increasingly more casual in recent years, particularly as many of us have now made the transition to working from home. Although a suit and tie were once expected in professional settings, an emphasis on stylish comfort has led to an increased interest in men’s athleisure for work.

Numerous companies no longer require employees to wear a stuffy button-down shirt and suit jacket to work. Instead, men’s athleisure for work has been embraced even by CEOs and high-level executives. This is a culmination of business-casual-meets-gym-wear — and it’s taken many workplaces by storm.

What is Men’s Athleisure For Work?

Although not every office environment is keen on the athleisure movement, many employers have come to the realization that judging their staff by their wardrobe may be a little too elitist to align with their true values. Besides, wearing a suit and tie doesn’t necessarily mean business goals will be achieved. The productivity and innovation displayed by those who wear men’s athleisure for work may rival — or even outpace — their peers who stick to more traditional workplace attire.

So what exactly falls under the category of men’s athleisure for work? Keep in mind that it’s probably still not appropriate to wear a grubby t-shirt and gym shorts to the office. But you can wear comfortable, breathable garments that can easily take you from your desk to your workout.

In many cases, men’s athleisure for work might include knit henley shirts, plain v-neck tees, woven or knit pants, seamless polos, knit bomber jackets, and wool sneakers. Most of these pieces will be made out of neutral-colored stretch fabrics that are easy to move in but that provide a put-together appearance. The key is to feel comfortable without looking like you just rolled out of bed. Layers are also helpful, especially if you spend your days in a cubicle (or working from home on your couch) but plan on going for a run after you clock out for the day. Be aware that your colors should still compliment and coordinate.

One of the appealing things about men’s athleisure for work is that you won’t be distracted by constricting fabrics. Tailored suits certainly have their place, but they can make it difficult to focus on your daily tasks. Who can stay productive when they’re too warm and uncomfortable? Athleisure items can make sure nothing holds you back from achieving your goals — all while allowing you to still look your best. To see more of our selection of men’s athleisure for work, take a look at our product inventory or contact us directly.

If you’re heading outdoors for any sort of activity, the last thing you want is for your wardrobe to be ill-prepared.

In fact, wardrobe choice can have more at-stake here, depending on how you look at it. The clothing you wear outdoors can be the difference between comfortable or cold, even life or death.

We live in a time where the knowledge of what to wear is often missing. Where our ancestors might have commonly understood, “weekend warriors” are often learning as they go, which is less than ideal if you’re too hot or too cold in the meantime!

No one wants to be that person who is unprepared, so here’s what you should know about dressing for the outdoors, whether you’re heading on an adventure, or simply getting from A to B during your day.

Free download: 8 tips for staying comfortable outdoors

Dressing for the weather

Not to state the obvious, but it’s always about being prepared for the weather conditions and being comfortable in them. If you’re a hiker, walking to your office, or even enjoying a bicycle trail near home, your clothing can make the difference between overheating or heading toward potential hypothermia.

The bottom line of dressing for the weather is choosing clothing to keep cool while it’s hot, and warm when it’s cold. Wearing layers is a key secret to achieving this in any kind of weather.

Layers mean that you adjust to temperature changes simply by adding or removing a layer. For convenience, mobility and versatility, it tends to be easier if you choose layers that will be easy to carry in a backpack or similar. There are several lightweight options that can pack a punch in terms of warmth.

Base layer clothing

The job of a base layer should be to keep you warm enough by wicking moisture away from your body. If you’re exerting yourself, you can work up a sweat even during cool temperatures, and sweat conducts heat away from your body. Different types of base layers will work for different weather conditions, for example:

  • Cold weather. Depending on the level of cold, midweight polypropylene or merino wool tops make for excellent base layers. Both will wick moisture and merino has the added bonus of not being prone to odor.
If it’s very cold, you might try a lightweight top underneath, with a midweight layered over the top for maximum wicking and warmth. It all depends on your own level of exertion and comfort. Some people might opt for short sleeves instead of long, for example.
Note also that if it’s particularly cold, you may need long underwear under your pants in either wool or polypropylene too.
  • Warm weather. You might be out in hot weather, in which case a short sleeve, synthetic fiber t-shirt and polyester briefs can be good as moisture wicking base layers.
Essentially, any shirt can become a base layer in warm weather, so look for something with moisture wicking. You might also look for UPF rated base layers to provide extra sun protection.

Mid layer clothing

The job of the mid layer is to provide warmth (more so than the base layer). Its function is to insulate you from the cold and continue to wick moisture away. (Of course, you may not need this layer at all in warm conditions, but it’s good to have in your pack).

A good example of a mid layer is the classic fleece. It is still breathable so that you don’t overheat and will continue to wick moisture. A jacket with synthetic insulation such as soft shell may also do the trick.

Outer layer clothing

The outer layer is there to protect you from the elements. In wet or snowy conditions it should keep you dry, while acting as a windbreaker to prevent the chill from getting through on windy days.

Of course, outer layer clothing depends upon the weather. If it’s not raining or you don’t expect wet weather, then you can wear something more breathable as an outer shell (for example, soft shell or a ventilated wind shell).

Many shell layers these days are not insulated, which actually allows for a great deal of versatility. For example, you can wear them over the top of insulated layers in the winter to stay warm and dry, or put it over the top of your tech t-shirt in the spring to ward off showers.

It’s also important to know the difference between “waterproof” and “water resistant.” All waterproof and water resistant layers have been treated on the outside to help prevent the garment from absorbing water, but waterproof layers have been coated on the inside and have sealed seams to ensure you stay dry. If you’re expecting heavier rain, you need to go for waterproof.

Suggestions for outdoor clothing

Here are a few suggestions of outdoor clothing from our catalogue:

Gimos water-resistant coat

The Gimos water-resistant coat is an excellent all-rounder for inclement weather. You can wear it for your outdoor adventures, but the stylish design is equally at home over the top of your suit during wet weather.

The coat features a removable wind barrier at the chest for extra protection.

Dressing for the outdoors

Women’s “Save the Duck” vests

We have three different styles of Save the Duck vests for women including longer, shorter or hooded styles.

These are an excellent outer layer choice for breezy spring or fall days, or even on milder winter days. Save the Duck provides the warmth of down but uses a synthetic alternative.

Relwen Knit Jacquard Snap CPO

This compact, densely woven, super lightweight shell fabric is durable and soft. It will pack easily into a backpack, be light to carry, but provide warmth when you need it, even on very cold days.

The welded diamond cells of this knit are filled with polyfill to provide insulation. Reinforced woven taslan facing at placket, cuffs, collar, hem and chest pocket make it a durable choice, ideal whether you’re involved in something highly physical, or just taking a stroll.

Dressing for the outdoors

Relwen Pack Light Shell

When you need something lightweight and waterproof, this is the outer layer shell for you. The construction maintains breathability in the heat and warmth when the weather cools.

The jacket features vent panels under the arms and at the back along with a light mesh lining to provide ample airflow. It has elastic cinches around the waist that will mold to your lower layers.

Importantly, you’re not sacrificing style! This is a well-made jacket that looks good.

Dressing for the outdoors

Relwen Shag Fleece Jacket

This shag fleece jacket with hood is the ideal mid-layer on very cold days, or outer layer during less-cold days. The exterior is a sherpa knit pile with an interior of smooth bonded fleece.

The high throat collar is a great feature for zipping against the cold and the hood is designed to contour around the face for maximum comfort. This is the perfect, versatile layer.

]]>
While black remains a perennial favorite in high-end fashion, the 2023 Spring/Summer runways showcased a refreshing shift toward a more subtle and sophisticated color palette. This year, high-end fashion embraces a sense of muted luxury, designing classic pieces in colors that ooze effortless elegance. Some of the standout hues that will redefine your wardrobe this spring include:

Sage Green

Although a more muted interpretation of the popular green trend, sage, aka celadon, laurel, or pistachio green, offers a calming and versatile alternative. This color works beautifully in suits, jackets, and even casual separates, making it a perfect choice for work and leisure. Why not add depth to your business casual look with a pistachio green linen blazer paired with a crisp white button-down shirt?

Orange-Peel Tones

Soft orange and peach hues add a touch of warmth and playfulness to your wardrobe. Imagine a luxurious leather jacket in a rich orange shade or a flowing dress in a delicate apricot hue. For men, a dusty rose linen shirt offers a sophisticated take on the orange-peel color palette. This slightly cooler shade pairs awesomely with the warmth of the orange tones for a touch of elegance without losing the playful spirit of the trend.

Sunbeam Yellow

This season’s pale yellow outdoes trends and acts as the new neutral. Its subtle adaptability makes it a worthy investment that seamlessly transitions between cream and beige depending on the light. Pair a crisp pale yellow dress shirt with navy chinos for a daytime look, then swap the pants for charcoal trousers for a polished evening ensemble.

For men who are new to wearing yellow, stick to neutral colors such as blues, greens, grays, rusts, and browns. Such hues complement the brightness of yellow without being too overpowering. For casual outfits, experiment with vibrant shades of yellow, which look great when paired with cooler colors due to their contrasting effect.

Skylight/Pale Blue

For a breath of fresh air, this universally flattering color graces the runways in all its glory. Get a fashion-forward look by pairing sky blue with unexpected colors, like pink, muted yellow, red, and gold. You can never go wrong in pairing colors of the ocean, such as blue and green regardless of the shades. As an autumn color, beige goes perfectly well with any tints and shades of blue.

Chocolate Brown

Even though the focus leans towards subtle sophistication, there’s still room for bolder choices. A 90s revival with staying power, this rich tone adds depth and richness to your wardrobe. Consider a pair of designer brown boots or a brown suit. Chocolate brown exudes a sense of sophistication that brings out a touch of nostalgia to contemporary fashion.

Cheerful Cherry Red

Dopamine dressing is still a thing! Red takes center stage as the color du jour, replacing the pinks of previous seasons. Opt for a statement red coat with a stirrup black legging or a show-stopping red dress with matching accessories, perfect for spring/summer soirées. For a “tough look,” consider a distressed bomber jacket with a red crewneck layered underneath.

Steel Gray and Snow White

While some might argue that gray and white are not trends, their enduring presence on the runways cannot be ignored. The key lies in exploring different textures and adding layers to these classic colors for a fresh, modern look. Layer a crisp, white linen shirt under a chunky, steel gray knit sweater to achieve a casually chic look.

Take it a step further by adding a soft-white blazer, ending up with a touch of timeless polish that surpasses trends. All-gray ensembles redefine understated elegance and offer a modern twist on classic sophistication. Incorporate textural variations, like pairing a charcoal cashmere sweater with slim-fit wool trousers in a lighter shade of gray.

Mirror Silver

Once relegated to the backburner, silver is making a triumphant return. From statement trousers to sleek bags, this metallic shade adds a touch of contemporary cool to any outfit. Men can incorporate this bold trend, subtly yet stylishly, with a pair of slim-fit silver chinos. It will instantly elevate a classic navy blazer and white button-down combo without overwhelming the outfit.

The post How to Build a High Fashion Business Casual Spring Look appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
As the weather warms up, we’re able to plan our outfits with less of an eye toward the practical. With the advent of the high-fashion business casual spring/summer collections, we have even more inspiration to draw on and options to choose from. If you’re looking to keep your wardrobe current, versatile options like high-quality jeans for men and colorful blouses for women are a great place to start.

Sophisticated Choices for Men

With more employees returning to the office, men need closets filled with appropriate and stylish options. High-fashion business casual outfits reign supreme as fewer professions require suits. And building a business casual wardrobe starts with the right slacks and jeans in various colors. Some of the hottest ensembles this year have been anchored by jeans. Look for washed denim and jeans with interesting fabrics, pocket placement, and color choices. Teleria and Alberto offer excellent selections.

Of course, jeans shouldn’t be your only pant choice. Formal office meetings, events, and social gatherings demand a dressier class of casual pants. A few pairs of slacks and trousers are perfect to pair with a sports shirt, lightweight sweater, vest, and sports coat. Look to Peter Millar & Codice, among other designers, for comfortable and fashionable sweater options. Waterville offers some sharp vest options as well.

Take the time to review your wardrobe and see what items you need to create a range of comfortable options that impress. Make sure you have enough sports shirts, especially a few solid options. Solid colors are excellent when the vibe is a bit more conservative or formal. Striped twill, small check, and dot shirts can also be great options. Also, for a little added flair, consider bold-colored stripes or interesting geometric patterns.

In cooler weather, envelop your sports shirt in a trendy vest or accent it in a sweater. A nice ribbed-tipped full-zip or double-knit zip cardigan can complement your outfit perfectly. You could also select a lightweight textured wool coat or cashmere blazer. Well suited for the warmer season, these fine fabrics can give your outfit the extra pizzazz it needs.

Chic Styles for Women

It’s not only time for men to review, toss, and upgrade their closets. Women should also indulge in a bit of spring closet cleaning and pepper their wardrobes with high-fashion business casual (and formal) fits that are comfortable, cute, and easy to maintain. Many top-flight looks have been effectively translated into perfect fits for the office this spring and summer.

Women’s everyday workwear can also combine casualty with high fashion. Faherty offers a raft of appropriately stylish choices perfect for the season. Not only are their blouses and dresses chic, but they are also comfortable, soft, and washable.

Adding a dash of color to your outfit’s neutral base can have a great effect. A colorful Rag & Bone blouse is the perfect touch of elegance for Spring. A Kinross cardigan or crew offers color yet is lightweight, breathable, and comfortable. And for brisker days, a Porto or Floral print scarf may offer the panache your outfit needs to sign. These light layers are just what you need for stirring looks that are versatile and inspired.

Patterns can also be great to play with. Solid colors are great, but ensure you play it safe. Patterns can provide a touch of daring and help you stand out. They may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but geometric designs, checks, stripes, and other shapes can help you project boldness and confidence when you need it most.

Whether you play up patterns or keep it simple with solids, consider your ensemble’s fit. Many people chase trends over how an outfit fits, feels, and highlights their natural physique. Your outfit shouldn’t be stylish yet uncomfortable. There are way too many great garments out there. In a world that’s become increasingly less formal in recent years, it’s now essential for professionals of all ages to have a more versatile wardrobe to suit virtually every occasion. As such, business casual clothes for men play an important role in helping you look put-together without trying too hard.

Whether you’re seeking options that will take you from the office to the local bar or you need some garments that you can wear to family gatherings, client meetings, and the occasional dinner date, you’ll want to focus on finding business casual clothes for men that show off your sense of style and ability to coordinate colors and fabrications.

What Are Business Casual Clothes For Men?

The concept of “business casual” might seem rather vague to some people, especially those who are accustomed to formal professional attire. There isn’t a strict definition for what encompasses business casual, but most people generally agree that it’s a less buttoned-up alternative to suit jackets and ties.

Apparel that falls under this category has been deemed appropriate enough for both work and social occasions, but it’s neither distressed nor sloppy. Some great examples of business casual clothes for men include textured or patterned button-down shirts (worn without a tie), sweaters and sweater vests (often layered over collared shirts), knit turtlenecks and cardigans, dress slacks or chinos, dark jeans, tailored blazers, colorful socks, loafers, lace-up or dress shoes, and leather belts.

If you’re being told to wear business casual clothes for men, there are also a few things you’ll want to avoid. In general, you should not wear t-shirts or loud patterned shirts, light-colored or torn jeans, hooded sweatshirts, sandals, baggy-fitted clothing, or sneakers. These might be appropriate for a casual Saturday around the house or at the park, but they aren’t considered business casual. When you’re having trouble determining whether a piece might fall under the category of business casual clothes for men, ask yourself whether it might be frowned upon to wear it to the office and then out to a dinner date. If you’d feel self-conscious or worry about what others might say about your wardrobe, chances are that it’s either too formal or too casual.

Although business casual clothes for men can be quite comfortable, the emphasis here is to look sharp without being too stiff. These items should be well-tailored and made of high-quality materials that will last for years to come. To see more of our selection of business casual clothes for men, get in touch with us or peruse our inventory online.

Being well-dressed for any weather or occasion is about more than just the style of clothing you are wearing.

Have you ever dressed in an outfit to look good for an occasion, only to find yourself too hot or too cold? Perhaps the fabric stuck or didn’t seem to breathe very well. Fabric choice can play a big role in how comfortable you feel and how neat your appearance is.

If you live in an area that experiences the fluctuations of the seasons, then you’re going to need a mix of clothing in different fabrics to dress for the weather. In any case, it’s a good idea to understand which fabrics hold up better under different conditions.

Here is our guide to fabric choices for the seasons:

Free download: A quick guide to fabrics

Summer fabrics: Some do’s and don’ts

When you’re heading into warmer weather, it’s time to think about fabrics that will keep you cool and comfortable. The “hot and bothered” look is never a good one in a professional setting! You don’t want to be sweating or risking that your choice of clothing contributes to body odor.

The best summer fabrics are breathable, here are some to consider:

Linen

Linen garments have been popular in Europe for years, but have been slow to catch on here in the U.S. Many people here have avoided it due to its tendency to crease and wrinkle, but the fabric’s properties make it one of the most comfortable to wear in hot weather. In fact, while at first, linen fibers are stiff and wrinkle easily, they become smoother with handling and use.

Linen is a loosely woven fabric that is laboriously made from the flax plant. It is known to be one of the strongest natural fibers in the world. In fact, US currency among others uses a blend of linen and cotton for more robust bank notes.

The linen fibers are thicker than cotton and longer, which contributes to its strength. You can expect a well-made linen garment to last a long time. In terms of comfort, linen has strong moisture-wicking properties and dries a lot faster than cotton does. It also has a natural ability to prevent bacterial growth, which helps when you don’t want to end up with body odor on shirts.

Linen is also known for being a comfortable option for those with skin allergies or conditions. The properties of the fibers can make it a good option for all seasons, keeping you cool in summer and layered for warmth in winter.

Cotton

Cotton is another natural fiber that allows air to circulate when you wear it. Here in the U.S., cotton is a very popular choice for warm weather clothing. The fibers aren’t as strong as linen, although strength is achieved by spinning multiple fibers into the yarn.

Good-quality lightweight cottons will also help to absorb moisture and keep you cool. In fact, cotton absorbs around 25% of its weight in water. This means it can become heavy and wet if exposed to a lot of moisture.

In terms of handling, cotton is usually soft and smooth from when you purchase it. Cotton does have a tendency to wrinkle, so many people choose to wear a blend with polyester, especially for travel.

Chambray and Seersucker

Chambray is often confused with denim, but it is actually a more lightweight cotton fabric with a plain weave. It has a finish like linen with a mottled texture.

Chambray shirts tend to be a basic item that transcends the seasons. The plain weave helps it to stay cool in the heat and it absorbs moisture well.

Seersucker is another fabric from the cotton family and is known for being thin and lightweight. You’ll often find boating attire or summer dresses made from this fabric, usually in striped or checkered patterns.

Fabrics to avoid in hot weather

If we were to sum up the fabrics to avoid when you need to feel cool, it would be any fabric that repels moisture. You want summer fabrics to absorb moisture, otherwise areas of dampness are more likely to show on what you’re wearing.

This puts synthetic fabrics among the worst choices for summer wear. Most of them do not absorb moisture at all, meaning you can end up bathing in sweat. Fabrics to avoid include:

  • Nylon – This fabric repels water and will tend to trap heat and sweat against your skin.
  • Acrylic – The fabric will feel hot and abrasive against your skin.
  • Rayon – This synthetic will repel water also.
  • Polyester – While this is often used in travel-wear, a high percentage of polyester means that it too will repel rather than absorb moisture.
  • Faux leather or vinyl – You’ll end up feeling like you’ve been wrapped in plastic wrap…
  • Denim – While made from cotton, the sturdy, heavy weave makes it smothering to wear in the heat.

Winter fabrics: Some do’s and don’ts

The advice for winter fabrics very much depends on where you are wearing the clothes and how cold it is. If you’re heading up into the mountains on a ski trip, you need to pay particular attention to fabrics that will not only keep you warm, but dry at the same time. If you’re in the office, you still want something breathable.

Here are some fabrics to look at:

Cotton

Yes, cotton is a good, breathable choice for all seasons. In the colder weather look for thicker weaves for some extra warmth. Of course, you’re probably layering a blazer or jacket over the top anyway.

However, if you’re heading somewhere cold for outdoor activities, cotton is a poor fabric choice. In fact, wearing it can lead to hypothermia under the right conditions. Cotton is hydrophilic, which means that it won’t wick moisture away from your skin. It absorbs the moisture and can end up feeling wet and cold.

Wet cotton may wick heat away from your body up to 25 times faster than when the fabric is dry. If say, you’re wearing a cotton undershirt up on the mountain and sweating with exertion, it will quickly soak up the sweat and have you feeling as cold as though you fell into some water.

Leather or Faux leather

This is a fabric choice which can carry you through spring and fall as well. Leather tends to get better with age and form to your body shape, making it a flattering choice. It is tough and versatile, with a history as a popular choice for body armor.

Leather is good as a wind-breaker against the biting chill and is naturally water-resistant. Water will get through wool or denim much faster than leather.

Fabric choices

Wool

Wool is a natural fiber that is very breathable, but also retains a lot of warmth. It wicks moisture away from your skin, trapping it to keep you warm.

Wool creates a natural insulation due to the air pockets among its properties. Even if wool gets wet, you will stay warm due to its natural water resistance. The fabric is also known for being odor-resistant – outdoor trekkers may wear the same piece of clothing for several days without it smelling.

A good-quality wool garment can last you for years. It is easy to care for and retains its shape if looked after well. There are different types of wool to look out for, with Merino being one of the finest knits. You’ll find wool garment choices from casual to formal-wear.

Final thoughts

Your fabric choice for the season should have you looking good and feeling comfortable. Remember a couple of general rules:

  • In hot weather, you want fabric that absorbs moisture
  • In cold weather (particularly when outdoors), you want moisture-wicking fabric.

Some of the natural fibers such as wool will take you through all seasons, but fabrics like cotton and linen should be avoided in situations such as ski trips. Remember that the synthetics tend to be less breathable and uncomfortable in summer, but may work just fine in winter.

The post How to Style a Shacket: Winter Guide appeared first on Family Britches.

It’s shacket season again! A time we all love. What is a shacket, you wonder. Simply put, it is a “shirt jacket.” Join the two words, and you get a shacket. Brilliant, right? It’s thicker than your average shirt but lighter than a coat, making it easy to layer with other clothing items, notwithstanding the weather.

Shackets come in a variety of fabrics, shapes, and sizes, making them the most versatile way to upgrade your style. If you want a fresh new addition to your winter casual wear, a shacket is an easy way to revamp your look. Ahead, we share tips to help you style your shackets for winter.

How to Style a Shacket

If you want to jump in on the trend but are stumped on how you could add it to your wardrobe, here are easy ways to style your shacket:

Pair With a Simple T-Shirt and Your Favorite Jeans

We all love the classic plain white tee and blue jeans. Unsurprisingly, this tried and true combo pairs magnificently with a shacket. To achieve the perfect look, go for a shorter shacket, preferably one that reaches your upper thigh. Also, complete the look with some comfortable sneakers or some cute boots.

Style With Leggings

Because shackets are longer, they pair perfectly with leggings. This no-fail look elevates your fashion, making you look put together yet comfortable. Leather leggings are a wardrobe staple for the winter season, adding some dimension to your typical shacket outfit. You can go for Chelsea boots or sneakers with a fitting tee for a more laid-back look or a heeled boot and your favorite bodysuit to make you look classy.

Style With a Crop Top

Crop tops don’t need to be forgotten once the temperatures drop. If putting together an outfit with a crop top as the centerpiece feels outside your alley, let us help you. Layering is key if you want to rock a crop top comfortably in the colder months. You can layer on your shacket to keep warm and pair it with a midi skirt to get more coverage.

Add a Bold Color

Thanks to Coco Chanel, nothing says chic and elegant more than rocking an all-black outfit. This is considered the epitome of class and high-end fashion. However, you could throw in some fun by adding bold colors to the mix. Spice up any neutral outfit by adding on a bright-colored shacket. This is a sure way to make a statement while still giving a laid-back vibe.

Style With Sweatpants

The popularity of sweatpants means you can rock them just about anywhere – if you style them correctly. Take your favorite sweatsuit and style it with a mid-length shacket, sneakers, or lug boots. You can add more style to this look by throwing in a hat.

Style With a Sweater and Ripped Jeans

The sweater and jeans outfit is a classic. It is a safe everyday look you can easily put together even on the laziest of days. However, if you are dressing for the chilly weather and want to throw on something warm, you could layer your outfit with a matching shacket for a sleek look and a cozy vibe.

Style With Trousers and Flats

The best thing about this look is you can wear it to the office and after-work drinks. Pairing a shacket with your favorite trousers and cute ballet flats makes you feel polished and trendy. To stand out better, make your inside layer monochrome and use a shacket to add a pop of color to your outfit.

Team It With a Turtleneck

When winter rolls around, the focus is to stay warm. The cold season often involves some staples that never run out of fashion. A great example is the turtleneck, which provides extra warmth because its fabric covers the neck area.

While the winter staple is perfect to wear on its own, it also pairs perfectly with a shacket. This is a magnificent way to put together a layered look, as the top of your turtleneck will peek out from beneath the shacket. You can play around with color here to create a more sophisticated look.

Style With a Cute Winter Hat

Another magnificent shacket styling tip is teaming it with your go-to winter hat. Popular hats for this look include bobble hats and knitted beanies, which keep you warm and add that extra layer of detail you’ve been yearning for.

How to Accessorize Your Shacket

Winter accessories are ideal for elevating your style and providing that extra layer of warmth. Here are some of our favorite accessories to go with your shacket:

  • Scarves
  • belts
  • Hats
  • Gloves
  • Socks

Select a fabric that is warm, soft, comfortable, and, not to forget, stylish. Top recommendations include cashmere, faux fur, and faux shearling.

The post 7 Best Fabrics for Your Summer Wear appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
Summer’s warm temperatures and extended daylight hours make it a great season for outdoor activities like picnics, camping, hiking, and biking. However, to hit the outdoors with style, you need one crucial thing—light, moisture, and wicking clothes. The clothes pull sweat away from your body to keep you comfortable during summer’s warm temperatures. Since not every light cloth is comfortable, Family Britches has suggested top summer fabrics that won’t pick up sweat stains so you can make the right decision.

1. Linen

Linen is one of the best fabrics for summer. The fabric’s natural fibers have an open structure that allows air to flow through easily. This breathability allows heat and sweat to escape, keeping you cool and comfortable.

Apart from the enhanced breathability, linen fibers are excellent at preventing dirt and stains. With summer wear made from linen, you will worry less about visible stains from sweat, food, or outdoor elements.

2. Cotton

Like linen, cotton stands out among the best fabrics for summer for one reason- exceptional breathability. Cotton fibers have a network of tiny gaps that cool you down by allowing air to circulate freely into and out of your body.

Besides breathability, cotton draws moisture away from the skin, helping regulate body temperature and prevent the sticky sensation from sweating. The sweat absorbed by cotton evaporates away quickly, minimizing the appearance of stain marks.

3. Silk

Silk has plenty of pores that allow heat and moisture to escape from the skin during summer’s warm weather. The lightweight nature provides a comfortable and airy feel against the skin, further keeping you cool and comfortable.

Unlike cotton and linen, silk’s dense and smooth fibers may not absorb sweat effectively and can show sweat stains. For this reason, go for those lined with moisture-wicking fabrics when looking for the right silk garments.

You should also pick darker colors like blue, black, charcoal, and dark brown to conceal sweat marks.

4. Chambray

Chambray fabric resembles denim in appearance but is lighter and more breathable. It is commonly used to make casual and stylish summer attire, such as shirts, dresses, shorts, and lightweight jackets.

Although chambray resembles denim in appearance, it is highly breathable. Its simple weave lets air move through easily, keeping you cool in hot weather. Chambray’s cotton composition and woven texture absorb moisture, and its darker colors conceal those unsightly sweat stains.

5. Jersey

The jersey fabric for summer attire is made from a combination of cotton and other fabrics, like polyester. Just like many summer fabrics, the jersey boasts excellent breathability since its knit construction has tiny loops and spaces.

Besides the excellent breathability, the jersey fabric is light and stretchy, enhancing your comfort further.

6. Merino Wool

Wool, especially merino wool, is not a preserve for making warm clothing for winter. Rather, the fabric is also ideal for making various types of summer wear, some of which include T-shirts, lightweight sweaters, and tank tops.

As a summer fabric, merino wool’s fibers allow air to circulate in and out of the skin keeping you cool. Moreover, merino wool draws moisture from your skin and lets it evaporate without leaving sweat marks.

With this natural moisture-wicking capability, summer attire made from merino wool will keep you dry in the warm climate.

7. Chiffon

Chiffon is another great fabric for making various types of summer wear, including blouses, dresses, and scarves. Typically, the chiffon material stands out for its lightweight which gives a comfortable and airy feel.

Besides the lightweight, Chiffon is loosely woven to create small gaps that allow air to circulate freely through the fabric. For this reason, wearing chiffon summer clothes will keep you cool in summer’s hot and humid conditions.

Apart from breathability, chiffon can absorb a good amount of sweat to keep you dry. On the downside, light-colored chiffon outfits might show sweat stains. Given that, it matters to buy dark-colored chiffon clothes so sweat stains won’t be visible.

Building up a wardrobe for the first time — or overhauling an established one — generally happens in waves. Each season brings a new selection of clothing items. The scarves and heavier outerwear take a backseat to lighter, airier items. Depending on the locale and personal style, some lighter colors might match the turn towards warmer months as well.

Transitioning between seasons can be tricky. It’s never as simple as keeping all the same indoor wear and taking that outdoors with you. Seasonal changes are a great time to expand, taking your menswear options to the next level. Here are some key tips for how to make the next big refresh to your style as the summer months draw closer.

WHICH CLOTHING ITEMS SHOULD BE STORED AS WINTER TURNS TO SPRING?

There’s no better time to organize your wardrobe than during the transitional seasons. This spring, set aside time to go through all of the clothes and accessories that won’t be appropriate for the upcoming sunlight, heat, and humidity.

You’ll want to clean, fold, and store winter clothing items like:

  • Wool sweaters
  • Fleece vests
  • Nylon jackets
  • Tweed topcoats
  • Gloves
  • Scarves
  • Wool socks

WHICH WINTER ITEMS CAN BE INCORPORATED INTO YOUR SUMMER WARDROBE?

Summer months aren’t always just sweltering heat. You’ll want to keep light raincoats, track jackets, and light vests around. Items that can be easily folded and taken along in a backpack or suitcase just in case of a rainy day or cooler-than-expected evening are great.

An airy knit blazer is the perfect item to wear year-round, so keep these on hangers. If this business casual style is part of your look, there’s no reason to leave it behind in the winter months. Consider adding new knit blazers in brighter, lighter colors to expand your wardrobe options in the summer.

And, of course, you’d be best served by some high-quality cotton blend socks. Breathable materials are crucial for making it through a long summer day.

THREE SIMPLE TIPS TO FOLLOW WHEN TRANSITIONING TO SUMMER FASHION

Everybody’s different, but most of us can rely on these three simple, crucial tips for updating our wardrobes for the summer:

1. LIGHTEN UP YOUR COLORS

Color choices do not apply universally. Everybody has a different aesthetic and looks best by applying their personal color theories when coordinating outfits. Getting advice from a menswear professional is a great way to figure out which colors look great on you.

But in a more general sense, you’ll be looking at lighter colors. Whites, lavenders, pinks, light blues, yellows, all colors that reflect light rather than absorb it. It’s great for comfort, and it provides a fantastic opportunity to show off a new side of your personal style.

2. BREATHABLE, LIGHTWEIGHT FABRICS ARE A MUST

Going with the lighter colors, you’ll also want to lean on different materials for the most part. This doesn’t mean ditching materials like wool altogether, though! Thinner, tropical wool is perfect for summer. Lighter linens are perfectly appropriate.

Summer tweed looks heavy, but has higher cotton content that makes it much more breathable than one might assume. And speaking of cotton, chambray is a great alternative to denim for the hottest summer days.

3. ROTATE IN MORE LOW-PROFILE FOOTWEAR

You’re going to wear more short-sleeved shirts and shorts over pants. Consider applying the same logic to your footwear. Low-profile sneakers instead of high-tops. Espadrilles look great and are incredibly comfortable. And yes, you can bring out the loafers that served you so well in the winter. They’ll look great even with a pair of all-day shorts.

ASK A FASHION EXPERT FOR ADVICE ON UPDATING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE FOR SUMMER

Building your winter wardrobe was all about layers. You had plenty of options, all looking great as you switched from indoor to outdoor modes. But the summer is a different situation altogether. You’ll spend most of your day in a single outfit, and each piece of clothing has to count. In the summer, there is a such thing as being overdressed.

So how can you pin down what your refreshed, seasonal aesthetic is going to be? Consider reaching out to the menswear professionals at Family Britches. We can help you decide which clothing items match your existing wardrobe. We can give you advice on color matching.

You can visit our physical location in Chappaqua, NY, where one of our clothing professionals will be happy to pass along some advice. Or, you can simply reach out to us directly. We would be delighted to help you build — or refresh — an enduring summer wardrobe.

The post Transitioning Your Wardrobe From Summer to Fall appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
Whether we like it or not, summer is drawing to a close. September is here, and every day we will start to see the temperatures dip lower as the leaves begin to fall. While many people associate spring with being the season of change, autumn is just as dramatic a tool for bringing about many shifts in the world around you. The heating units need to be serviced, you have to think about whether you need new winter tires soon, school is back in session, and your wardrobe is going to need some serious change.

Formal and casual menswear basics need to be switched out as the seasons change. Partially for practical reasons, as you’ll start wearing long sleeves and sweaters again, but also for style purposes. There are certain colors and fabrics that, when worn straight from summer to fall, are inappropriate. To avoid passé outfits that get you looks when you walk down the street, we have compiled some of our best tips on how to keep your wardrobe in season and ready to go.

Of course, it goes without saying that these are just our tips on how to optimize your wardrobe for autumn. You should always wear whatever you are most comfortable in, whether it is in season or not! If you take away any advice from this article, it should be that the comfort and practicality of your clothes are always the most important factors when picking out an outfit.

Keep It Cool Toned

Summer is for your brighter colors, and as the weather warms up, we ditch the men’s casual trousers for athleisure and shorts. Now that Fall is approaching, we have to revamp our closet yet again.

Every year, fall tends to bring cooler tones to the runways and the streets. Loud colors are ditched for grays, blacks, and other more muted tones. This year, it seems the aesthetic is tipping more towards Victorian libraries. You can expect to see more maroons and browns, which were colors we already saw dominating the scene last autumn, too.

Nudes and tans are also very trendy for this upcoming season. Instead of opting for a classic white or even pink button-up, try to add wine reds and relaxed yellows to your work shirt collection. Work trousers can probably stay steady, as black, navy and darker khakis are commonplace for business casual attire every season.

For more casual menswear, vests are becoming a staple of the Fall scene through the past few years. Casual clothing can allow you to break away a bit more from the traditional mold of fall colors, however, to stay in style, you will still want to keep the tones cool and muted. Dark blues and greens can help you stand out a bit more while still keeping it on-trend.

Thick Fabrics for Cooler Temperatures

As summer is hot, Fall is cool. Mesh, thin cotton, and athletic types of materials can be base layers, while the heavier fabrics are ones that will keep you warm and cozy.

In the pants department, try trading out your lighter weight jeans for other casual menswear basics, like khaki or even corduroy. Those fabric choices will allow you to blend the brown tones mentioned earlier with fall fabric staples and can be worn both in the office and outside. If you are sticking to jeans, darker washes, selvidge and even black denim can see you through from Fall even into winter. Knitted materials are commonplace for sweaters, and heavy cotton can be rocked as sweatshirts or long sleeves.

Flannel is perhaps the biggest autumn staple of all. This fabric comes in a variety of colors, for those who want to blend in or stand out, and have truly made itself a must-have piece in anyone’s closet. Flannel is incredibly versatile, too, and can function as everything from casual menswear to business casual clothes.

Blend It All Together

When you are going from summer to fall, a lot of your wardrobe will be heading into storage. However, not every piece from the hotter temperatures needs to be put away just yet. Keep your thin cotton shirts and other tops like that in your closet for layering. Cardigans and flannels always look best with a complimentary piece underneath them, and you get the added benefit of not needing to replace your entire wardrobe. This is beneficial for your wallet, as a 2016 study showed that men over 18 typically spent $10 more per month than women on clothes. By reusing pieces from the last season, you can help reduce that number.

As we mentioned before, these are simply our top tips for dressing in the fall. If you want to carve your own path, you are more than welcome to follow a different beat!

During the pandemic, millions of Americans made the switch to remote work. But even prior to 2020, telecommuting was becoming more popular than ever. Working from home can be a great way to stay productive while keeping employees safe.

But while you might not have to go into the office every day, you’ll still want to look and feel put-together. Not only will that ensure you’re perceived as a true professional during your Zoom conference calls, but you’ll also have more energy and possess the focus you need to stay on top of your responsibilities.

It might be tempting to stay in your pajamas all day, but science says that the clothes you wear can have a big impact on how others see you — and how you see yourself. At a time when mental health has never been more important, maintaining a work from home wardrobe can ease the effects of social isolation and allow you to reap the benefits of keeping up with your routine.

What Do You Need in Your Work From Home Wardrobe?

You might know that having (and using) a work from home wardrobe can be beneficial for both job performance and overall state of mind. But what are some must-haves for your work from home wardrobe? Whether you’re new to this way of working or your closet could use a refresh, there are some staples that will serve you well.

Of course, comfort is key. But that doesn’t mean you have to live in yoga pants or oversized sweatshirts. Business casual can be a good guideline to follow, as it’s professional without being stuffy or restrictive. Knit, stretchy fabrics are also great choices because they allow for movement without wrinkling. Woven pants, stretchy denim, knit tops, cardigans, soft sweaters, and v-neck tees are great options for employees of all genders. For women, flowy dresses, high-quality leggings, pullovers, and even fitted blazers are great options. And for men, henley tops, short-sleeved button-downs, polos, chinos, loafers, and “shackets” (overshirts that combine shirts and jackets into one) and soft constructed unlined jackets are popular choices.

While the normal office rules may not apply, you’ll still want to look polished without feeling restricted. Adding a few versatile basics to your work from home wardrobe can ensure you impress your boss and co-workers without sacrificing your comfort.
