Your Complete Guide to Mastering the Perfect Balance of Professional and Relaxed

Navigating the ambiguous world of business casual can feel overwhelming. Business casual means striking a balance between professionalism and comfort, allowing for versatile outfits like button-up shirts, chinos, blazers, and even dark jeans. You want to look professional enough to be taken seriously, but not so formal that you appear rigid or out of touch. Many people struggle with the business casual dress code, which differs from other dress codes by offering more flexibility while still requiring a polished appearance. We understand the daily struggle of wanting to make a good impression while expressing your personal style – and we’ve created the ultimate solution.

Why Choose Business Casual Outfits?

Business casual gives you significant advantages over both traditional formal wear and overly casual options. When considering business casual for men, these benefits become especially clear. Here’s what you gain:

 • Professional Flexibility – Command respect in any business setting without the constraints of a full suit
 • Personal Expression – Showcase your unique style while maintaining appropriate workplace boundaries
 • Enhanced Comfort – Enjoy increased mobility and comfort without sacrificing polish or professionalism
 • Versatile Wardrobe – Create dozens of distinct looks from just a few well-chosen pieces
 • Confidence Boost – Eliminate morning wardrobe anxiety with foolproof outfit formulas for any occasion

Building your Business Casual Outfits Step-by-Step

Follow these three simple steps to transform your approach to business casual and eliminate the guesswork from your daily routine.

Step 1: Build Your Foundation

Start with essential pieces that form the backbone of any business casual wardrobe. “Begin with quality basics like well-fitted dress shirts, tailored trousers, and versatile dress shoes—no fashion degree required.”

The foundation of any successful business casual wardrobe starts with investing in quality pieces that work across multiple settings. It is important to make sure to choose the correct clothing color palette that works for you. This includes:

 • 3-5 quality dress shirts in neutral colors (white, light blue, light grey)
 • 2-3 pairs of tailored trousers or business casual pants
 • 1-2 optional blazers for more formal settings
 • Button ups, which are a polished and versatile choice, offering a step above casual T-shirts and pairing well with chinos, blazers, or sweaters for a neat, professional look
 • Quality leather dress shoes (oxfords, loafers, or brogues)
 • Business casual shoes such as loafers, leather sneakers, or driver shoes, which strike a balance between professional and casual and complement a variety of outfits like chinos, polo shirts, or blazers
 • Versatile accessories like a quality watch and belt

A crisp white shirt paired with navy or grey tailored trousers creates the perfect blank canvas for business casual outfits. While a navy suit is a classic and more formal option, business casual basics allow for greater versatility and comfort in most office environments. From there, you can adapt and customize based on your workplace environment and personal preferences.

Step 2: Mix and Match

Learn the art of combining your foundation pieces to create numerous professional looks. “Our intuitive outfit formulas show you exactly how to pair items for maximum versatility and impact.”

The beauty of business casual lies in its ability to create dozens of distinct looks from relatively few pieces. Here are some foolproof formulas:

 • Classic Business Casual: Dress shirt + tailored trousers + leather shoes
 • Elevated Business Casual: Dress shirt + blazer + tailored trousers + leather dress shoes
 • Relaxed Business Casual: Polo shirt + chinos + leather shoes or minimalist sneakers

For relaxed business casual work attire in certain workplaces, you can wear sneakers as part of your business casual look, provided they are clean, minimalistic, and stylish. This option is increasingly common in modern office environments, but always ensure your sneakers maintain a polished appearance.

The key to mastering the mix-and-match approach is balancing more formal elements with more relaxed pieces. If you’re wearing jeans (which should be dark wash and well fitted), pair them with a tailored shirt and possibly a blazer to maintain professionalism.

Step 3: Adapt for Any Occasion

Customize your look based on specific workplace scenarios and seasonal changes. “Watch as wardrobe uncertainty transforms into confident style choices that perfectly match any business situation.”

Business casual offers exceptional flexibility to adapt to different situations:

 • Client Meetings: Opt for higher-end business casual with a blazer, dress shirt, tailored trousers, and leather shoes
 • Regular Office Days: Standard business casual with a dress shirt, chinos, and leather shoes makes for a polished look
 • Casual Fridays: A more relaxed approach with a polo shirt or casual button-up, dark wash jeans, and clean footwear strikes the perfect blend of casual while maintaining professionalism
 • Seasonal Adjustments: Layer with sweaters in winter, opt for lighter fabrics in summer, but always maintain the same level of put-together appearance

When building your business casual wardrobe, remember that a t shirt is generally not suitable for business casual settings, as it lacks the structure and formality needed for a polished, professional look. Business casual is not the same as casual attire for men—while relaxed attire may be acceptable in some workplaces, it should still be appropriate and polished, avoiding overly casual items like shorts or graphic tees.

What Makes the Business Casual Dress Code Different?

Business casual offers unique advantages that traditional formal wear simply can’t match. Men’s business casual is especially versatile, allowing for a relaxed yet professional appearance that suits a wide range of workplace environments.

 • Perfect Balance – Strikes the ideal middle ground between overly formal suits and too-casual weekend wear, finding the sweet spot that works across most professional settings
 • Seasonal Adaptability – Easily adjusts to weather changes while maintaining a consistent professional image through smart layering and fabric choices
 • Occasion-Appropriate Flexibility – Seamlessly transitions from formal meetings to casual Fridays with minor adjustments while balancing professionalism and comfort
 • Professional Versatility – Works across various industries and office settings while allowing employees to express personal style within appropriate boundaries. Men’s business casual attire continues to evolve, offering updated options like polo shirts, chinos, and different footwear choices to meet the needs of modern offices.

The fine line between business casual and smart casual can sometimes cause confusion. Business casual tends to lean more toward the professional side, while smart casual may incorporate more relaxed elements. When unsure, it’s preferable to be a bit overdressed rather than underdressed in business casual settings.

Essential Items for Business Casual Outfits

Building a versatile business casual wardrobe starts with a few essential pieces that can be mixed and matched for countless business casual outfits. Here’s what every professional man should have on hand:

 • Dress shirts: Invest in several high-quality dress shirts in solid colors like white, light blue, or subtle patterns. These are the foundation of any business casual outfit and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
 • Dress pants: Tailored dress pants in neutral colors such as navy, black, or gray are a must. They pair effortlessly with a variety of tops and help create a polished, office-appropriate look.
 • Business casual pants: Chinos or trousers in shades like light gray, beige, or navy add variety to your business casual wardrobe and work well for more relaxed office environments.
 • Blazers or sports coats: A tailored blazer or sports coat instantly elevates your business casual outfit, adding structure and sophistication without the need for a full suit.
 • Polo shirts: A few well-fitted polo shirts in solid colors or subtle patterns are perfect for warmer days or more laid-back business casual settings.
 • Leather dress shoes: High-quality leather dress shoes—think oxfords, loafers, or brogues in black or brown—are essential for completing your business casual look.
 • Belt: A simple leather belt in a matching tone keeps your outfit cohesive and adds a touch of polish.
 • Watch: A classic watch is a subtle way to add sophistication and show attention to detail.
 • Socks: Don’t overlook socks—choose high-quality pairs in neutral colors to complement your business casual outfits.

With these essentials, you’ll have the flexibility to create a wide range of business casual looks that are both stylish and professional.

Accessorizing a Business Casual Outfit

The right accessories can take your business casual outfit from basic to standout—without ever crossing the line into overdressed. Here’s how to accessorize with confidence:

 • Keep it simple: Less is more. Stick to one or two key accessories to maintain a clean, business casual look.
 • Add a pop of color: A pocket square or a patterned tie can inject personality into your business casual outfit, especially for a formal meeting or when you want to make a memorable impression.
 • Mix and match: Don’t be afraid to pair a leather belt with a metal watch or experiment with subtle patterns in your socks or pocket square. Just keep the overall look cohesive.
 • Consider the occasion: For important meetings, opt for more formal accessories like a tie or a classic pocket square. For everyday business casual, a sleek watch or understated belt is all you need.
 • Personalize your outfit: Accessories are a great way to express your personal style while still maintaining professionalism. Choose pieces that reflect your taste but don’t distract from your overall appearance.

Thoughtful accessorizing is the secret to a business casual outfit that feels uniquely yours while remaining office appropriate.

Seasonal Business Casual

Business casual attire isn’t one-size-fits-all—your business casual outfit should adapt with the seasons to keep you comfortable and stylish in any business casual setting.

 • Spring: Embrace lightweight fabrics and fresh colors. Pastel dress shirts, chinos in light gray or beige, and subtle patterns can add a touch of energy to your business casual wardrobe.
 • Summer: Stay cool with breathable fabrics like linen, cotton, or seersucker. Opt for light colors and short-sleeve polo shirts, and keep your business casual attire relaxed but still polished.
 • Fall: Transition to richer fabrics and earthy tones. Layer a tailored blazer over a dress shirt, and choose business casual pants in deeper shades like olive, burgundy, or charcoal for a sophisticated seasonal update.
 • Winter: Prioritize warmth with thicker fabrics such as wool or flannel. Darker colors and smart layering—think sweaters over dress shirts and under blazers—will keep your business casual outfit sharp and comfortable in colder months.

No matter the season, the key is to maintain a business casual look that’s both functional and professional for your workplace environment.

Do’s and Don’ts of Business Casual

Mastering business casual attire means knowing what works—and what to avoid. Here are some essential do’s and don’ts for any business casual setting:

Do:

 • Dress for the occasion: Always consider your industry, workplace, and the specific event when choosing a business casual outfit.
 • Keep it polished: Make sure your business casual attire is clean, ironed, and fits well for a put together appearance.
 • Add a personal touch: Use accessories and subtle patterns to showcase your personal style without sacrificing professionalism.

Don’t:

 • Overdo it: Avoid over-accessorizing or wearing too many bold patterns and bright colors, which can distract from your overall appearance.
 • Be too casual: Steer clear of t shirts, athletic sneakers, or ripped jeans—these don’t belong in a business casual setting.
 • Sacrifice professionalism: Even in a more relaxed office environment, your business casual outfit should always project respect and

Business Casual Outfits for Different Workplace Environments

Different settings may require different appropriateness. Adjusting business casual looks helps meet event expectations and prepares you for professional interactions. Outfits suitable for an office may be considered inappropriate for a formal conference.

Let’s look at specific recommendations for office settings, interviews, and work events.

Office Environment

A recommended outfit formula for men’s business casual includes:

 • Navy sports coat
 • White oxford shirt
 • Tan chinos
 • Brown oxford dress shoes

In a business casual outfit, pairing brown dress shoes with a brown belt enhances overall coordination and professionalism. Observing workplace attire norms is essential to ensure a professional appearance while fitting into the office environment.

In a more relaxed office workplace environment, you might find that casual Fridays allowing employees for a bit more flexibility, like well-fitted jeans paired with a crisp button-up shirt. However, always ensure that even in a relaxed setting, you’re maintaining professionalism and not sacrificing the polished business casual look.

Interviews

Selecting business casual attire for interviews should balance professionalism with approachability to make a strong impression. Opt for subtle patterns and traditional choices like a navy suit over a crisp white shirt.

This not only shows you mean business but also that you’re approachable and ready to fit into the company’s culture.

Work Events

Outfits for work events should reflect both the event’s formality and the organization’s culture to maintain a professional image. Consider wearing a statement shirt under a solid blazer for work events or conferences in business casual attire. This touch of flair can set you apart while still adhering to a professional dress code.

Building a Business Casual Wardrobe for Work

Building a business casual wardrobe for the workplace is all about investing in versatile, timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of looks. Essential items include:

 • Well-fitted shirts
 • Tailored trousers or chinos
 • Comfortable shoes
 • A lightweight blazer or jumper

The key to a versatile put together appearance is combining different colors and styles, aiming for a perfect blend rather than a single color outfit.

Proper fit is crucial; always ensure shirts are tucked in for a polished look, as leaving them untucked can appear disheveled. Avoid overly casual options like sneakers and distressed jeans, and opt for smart dress shoes instead.

Here are the specific elements that make up a stellar business casual wardrobe.

Dress Shirts

Dress shirts are the cornerstone of any business casual wardrobe. Crisp, well-fitted button-up shirts form the foundation of a polished look. The fit of a button-up should be perfect, hugging the shoulders and tapering at the waist without being too tight or too loose. Initial colors to consider include white and light blue, which are both versatile and professional.

Solid colors and subtle patterns, such as checks or stripes, are also recommended for button ups. More professional colors for business casual attire include:

 • Navy
 • White
 • Black
 • Grey
 • Light blue
 • Lavender
 • Pink

For spring and summer, lighter colors and pastels like soft blues, stone, and sage are suitable. Incorporating patterns and colors is acceptable, but balance is key to avoid overwhelming combinations.

Polo Shirts

A well-fitted and structured polo shirt can be a great addition to your business casual wardrobe. Choose fitted polos in neutral colors like navy, grey, or black to maintain professionalism while offering comfort. Avoid bright colors and bold patterns to maintain a subtle and refined look.

For polos, premium double knit jersey fabrics are recommended. They provide a good balance of comfort and style. When wearing a belt, tucking in your polo shirt can earn you extra style points.

Pairing a polo with tailored trousers or chinos creates a relaxed yet polished look perfect for business casual settings.

Blazers and Sports Coats

Blazers and sports coats are essential for elevating outfits in business casual settings. Adding a blazer can transform a simple business casual outfit into a polished and professional look. Layering with a charcoal blazer or sports coat enhances overall style. Recommended colors for blazers in business casual settings include:

 • Beige
 • Light blue
 • Light grey
 • White
 • Coral
 • Army green.

Linen blazers are particularly recommended for meetings, offering a smart yet casual appearance. A well-fitted blazer should contour to the shoulders and taper slightly at the waist. Using a pocket square can provide a stylish contrast to a blazer, adding an element of flair.

A well-fitted blazer enhances the silhouette for big and tall men. It adds polish without adding bulk.

Chinos and Dress Pants

Chinos and khakis are widely accepted as suitable for business casual attire. Trousers, chinos, and immaculate denim qualify as acceptable pants in business casual settings. Chinos are favored for their tailored yet relaxed fit, making them ideal for business casual.

Pants should remain less formal but still tailored to fit the business casual standard. Consider the following tips:

 • Choose well-fitted khakis in neutral tones.
 • Steer clear of casual details for a polished look.
 • Suitable colors for chinos or dress slacks include navy, beige, or grey.

Avoid loose-fit pants as they tend to look too casual; seek slim or tailored fits.

Footwear

Footwear is a crucial component of men’s business casual attire. Recommended footwear includes:

 • Dress shoes
 • Loafers
 • Minimalist sneakers
 • Leather chukka boots, which are rugged yet office-appropriate
 • Leather dress shoes, a classic choice for maintaining professionalism.

Colors like medium brown and minimal white are ideal for business casual shoes. Footwear should be clean, stylish, and not sports-oriented to fit business casual standards. Avoid sneakers or sandals unless explicitly permitted by office policy. Solid color leather shoes with minimal embellishment are ideal for a polished look.

Seasonal Business Casual Work Attire

Adjusting your business casual attire with the seasons ensures comfort and style throughout the year. Seasonal adjustments are necessary to stay comfortable and stylish, whether it’s the heat of summer or the chill of winter.

Here are specific tips for spring/summer and fall/winter.

Spring/Summer

Lightweight fabrics are essential for staying cool and comfortable during the warmer months of spring and summer. Delicate fabrics such as cotton and linen are perfect for staying cool. Linen, in particular, is a lightweight and breathable fabric that keeps you cool, making it ideal for summer attire.

Choosing light colors like pastels or soft blues enhances the freshness of spring attires. Lightweight chinos or airy trousers contribute to comfort and style in warmer weather. In spring and summer, a mix of breathable fabrics and light colors helps maintain a fresh and comfortable look. Short-sleeve shirts and unlined blazers are practical choices for warmer weather.

Fall/Winter

Layering with materials like knit and flannel enhances warmth during colder months. When layering for cold weather in business casual attire, consider fit, texture, and color balance among pieces. Darker colors such as burgundy and charcoal are ideal for creating a seasonal aesthetic.

Structured outerwear like coats or jackets preserves warmth while maintaining a polished look. In colder weather, incorporating layers such as cardigans and sweaters enhances both warmth and style.

For winter, materials like wool and flannel are recommended for their insulation properties. Opting for boots and structured outerwear can keep you warm while maintaining a sophisticated appearance.

Accessorizing Men’s Business Casual Outfits

Accessories can help adjust the formality of an outfit within the business casual spectrum. They are crucial for enhancing an outfit’s overall appeal and can reflect personal style. Keeping accessories minimal, such as limiting jewelry, is recommended for a business casual look. In work events, opting for unique accessories can help you stand out while still adhering to a professional appearance.

Smart accessories enhance the look of business casual outfits without overpowering them. Let’s delve into specific accessories like watches, belts, and pocket squares.

Watches

Stylish minimal designs are recommended for wristwatches in business casual settings. Minimalist wristwatches with leather or metal straps in neutral tones are ideal choices for a business casual outfit.

A good wristwatch is essential in completing a business casual look, as it enhances both style and professionalism.

Belts

Belts should complement the color and style of shoes for a cohesive look. Whether paired with dress shoes, loafers, or even minimalist sneakers, a belt that matches your footwear can tie your entire outfit together seamlessly.

Pocket Squares

Pocket squares add a touch of personality and sophistication, enhancing the overall appearance of a blazer or sports coat. When incorporating a pocket square, consider the material, color, and pattern to ensure it complements your blazer and personal style.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Business casual is less formal than traditional office wear but remains more polished than casual styles. One of the most common mistakes is misjudging the context of an event and dressing either too formally or too casually. Henleys and t-shirts are too casual for business casual attire. Always match your outfit to the setting to maintain professionalism.

Another frequent error is wearing items that are too casual, such as shorts or loose-fit pants. It’s crucial to avoid casual backpacks, gaudy jewelry, and novelty cufflinks, which can detract from a professional look. Grooming, neat tailoring, and confidence all contribute to a polished business casual look. Remember, maintaining a professional image requires attention to detail and understanding the event’s context.

Grooming and Maintenance

Grooming enhances professionalism and shows attention to detail. Key grooming practices include regular haircuts, beard trims, clean nails, simple skincare, and subtle cologne. Wearing wrinkled clothing can appear sloppy; always ensure clothes are pressed and wrinkle-free. Keep footwear immaculately clean to maintain an overall polished appearance and polished look.

Maintain clothing and appearance by:

 • Keeping clothing clean, wrinkle-free, and well-fitted.
 • Balancing professionalism in business casual attire to convey professionalism while allowing personal expression.
 • Ensuring a well-groomed appearance to complement your attire and complete your polished look.

Summary

Mastering business casual work attire for men involves understanding the balance between professionalism and comfort. From building a versatile wardrobe with essential pieces like dress shirts, chinos, and blazers to adjusting your attire seasonally and accessorizing thoughtfully, each element plays a crucial role. Avoid common mistakes by paying attention to grooming and maintaining a polished appearance. By following these guidelines, you’ll confidently navigate any business casual setting, making a lasting impression with your style and professionalism.

The easy days of summer are here. Unfortunately, this can mean oppressive heat, high levels of humidity, and the sun’s relentless rays beating down on you during your work day. Dressing professionally during the summer can be a labyrinth of choices that leave you feeling underdressed or overdressed for practically every occasion. If the contradictory term “business casual” makes you wonder how to dress for work and survive the summer heat, help is coming. Learn what fabrics and styles from your summer wardrobe help you beat the heat and maintain your professional appearance.

Wearing Summer Layers

Layers can add professionalism to any attire and help you navigate the changing temperatures from steamy parking lots to air-conditioned offices or restaurants with ease. Yet, the wrong fabrics and styles can trap heat, making you sweaty and uncomfortable no matter where you are. Successful summer layering is about the right fabrics and colors to ward off heat and enable cooling.

When choosing layers, begin with breathable natural fabrics in light colors. Linen, bamboo, and lightweight cotton are ideal for summer. Opt for pieces that are unlined or half-lined to avoid trapping heat. You can get away with a looser fit than with winter layers since these materials eliminate bulk. However, it’s essential that clothing maintains a tailored look instead of appearing baggy or ill-fitting. For example, ensure pants fit properly at your waist and hips and avoid shirts that balloon out with extra fabric.

How to Wear Polos and T-Shirts

Trading your crisp button-up shirts for knits can be confusing. Yet, the right approach can keep you cool while maintaining your professional appearance. If your workplace doesn’t have an overly strict dress code, polo shirts (and sometimes t-shirts) are a great balance between comfort and professionalism. Choose polos in neutral colors that are well-fitted and have a neat collar. If t-shirts are an option, take a similar approach, choosing smooth fabrics, no graphics, and neutral colors that will provide an understated appearance.

Pair these more casual shirts with dressier items for a pulled-together appearance. This can include lightweight dress pants or dress jeans or trousers, a sports coat, and a belt. Tucked polo shirts lend a neater appearance, and loafers instead of sneakers can elevate the overall look.

Summer Business Colors

For many men, the go-to professional attire is black, charcoal, or navy. Yet, these dark colors are certain to absorb the sun’s rays, making you feel hotter the moment you step outside. Lighter colors reflect light, making them naturally cooler. When choosing light colors, search for shades that maintain your professional appearance and will be easy to mix and match. Summer neutrals typically include white, grey, olive, light blue, cream, tan, and beige.

Walking the Line Between Business Casual and Casual Fridays

When you’re accustomed to wearing suits and ties, summer wardrobe staples can leave you feeling underdressed. The secret to avoiding the casual Friday look on Monday morning is in the details. While t-shirts and polos may be an option, they’re not the same ones you wear on the weekends for a trip to the beach or a morning at the golf course. Choose fitted garments that look smooth and tailored. Avoid overly bright colors, logos, and graphics. Chinos are a widely accepted option for many office settings, but styles vary widely. Seek lightweight cotton or wool pants with minimal details. A straight cut, few visible pockets, and unobtrusive stitching details offer a professional look in any color.

Accessories can go a long way toward dressing up casual garments. Wear a belt and leather shoes with a tucked shirt to dress up casual pants. Similarly, a lightweight linen blazer atop a casual cotton shirt adds a layer of polish.

Keeping Single-Layer Ensembles Professional

While you can wear layers in summer, single-layer ensembles are an acceptable way to beat the summer heat. Choosing dressier garments can help you achieve the same polish as layered looks. A crisp long-sleeved button-front shirt pairs nicely with chinos or lightweight dress trousers for a professional appearance. Sleeves can be rolled to the elbow to keep cool outdoors. Your favorite polo can be an option here, too. When opting for casual separates, consider a singular color palate to keep the look subdued. Accessories like belts and shoes go a long way here, too, elevating a casual look to business wear.

Why are sweaters a vital aspect of any man’s wardrobe? Sweaters are the perfect interface between a casual and formal style. The versatility of sweaters allows you to pair them with blazers and slacks or denim and a t-shirt. But sweaters come in different shapes and sizes. This article focuses on the different sweater neck styles for men and provides a guide on how to choose them. Keep reading to find out more!

Crew Neck Sweaters

These are among the most commonly rocked sweater styles by men. They are also one of the simplest. Crew neck sweaters have a round neckline with a thin band of ribbing that slightly increases their thickness. The crew neck was first made to strengthen the shoulder pads of football players and keep them from rubbing against their skin.

Crew neck sweaters are good-looking, and you can pair them with different clothing. But, they are not ideal for pairing with neckties.

Quarter Zip Sweater Neck Styles

The truth is that everyone loves versatility, especially when it comes to the clothes we wear. Well, the thick fabric of quarter zip sweaters makes them ideal for cool, chilly days and a must-have all year round. You can choose to rock these pullovers with your best dress pants when hitting the golf course or opt for a totally casual look. Regardless, you need at least a one-quarter zip pullover in your wardrobe.

Quarter zips also have a durable and high-performance fabric that makes them the right choice to pair with any outfit. Their comfy nature makes them wearable on any occasion, be it in the office, golf course, or everywhere in between.

V-Neck Sweaters

V-neck sweaters provide the obvious answer to the setbacks of the crew neck sweaters. This is because their neckline usually has a V-shaped design at the front. The advantage of this V-shape design is that it leaves room to enable you to wear a tie.

These are your ideal type of sweaters if you love a casual look that allows room for neckties and collared shirts.

Turtleneck Sweaters

Turtleneck sweaters offer a classic style with a tall collar that usually folds on itself. You can also leave the collar unfolded and doubled over, making it form a thick band around the neck.

Turtlenecks are perfect for cold weather because of their thick nature. They also make an ideal dressed-down replacement for the typical collars that tend to face downwards, as mostly seen on dress shirts.

The doubling over on turtleneck sweaters adds bulk. This makes them suitable layering items. It is easy to confuse turtlenecks with roll necks. But you can tell them apart by their fit and fold.

Roll-Neck Sweaters

These types of sweaters usually resemble turtlenecks that are baggier. A roll-neck sweater would partially cover your face when fully stretched upwards. But it has a broader opening and an unfastened knit, creating room for a loose-fitting roll around the lower neck.

A good and comfortable fit would be a narrow roll neck with a broad opening. This is because it is easy to layer.

Notch Neck Sweaters

The notch neck closely resembles the V-neck. It has a simple round opening all-round but has a minor V-shaped cutout in front, just below your chin. The notch neck offers a more casual style made to add some visibility to the standard pullover sweater.

Their design allows more muscular men to flash their well-built upper chests. You will mostly see this design on the lightest and tightest knit sweaters. The most common are brighter ones, which younger men prefer to rock with trendy outfits.

Cowl Sweater Neck Styles

Cowl necks are usually at the extreme end of baggy necks. The tube of fabric around the sweater’s neck opening is broad and soft. This means that you don’t need to fold it but rather slump it down into a pile of unfastened cloth.

Cowl neck sweaters allow for a baggy, rumpled, and relaxed look. They are perfect for cold weather, giving you a very warm feeling for the upper body. Cowl necks are malleable, allowing you to shift and flop the pile around, spread, and bundle.

Shawl Neck Sweaters

Shawl neck sweaters have a wide collar around their necks that is usually turned over. It is narrow at the front around the chest area, a feature mostly witnessed on cardigans or half-zip sweaters.

Shawl necks exhibit the traits of a suit but retain the softness of a sweater. They are a beneficial top layer ideal to put on in casual scenarios. Shawl necks also allow you to wear a tie, while denim can tone them down into basic indoor wear.

Polo Collar Sweaters

Most people associate “polo sweaters” with pullovers designed by Ralph Lauren. Even so, there are some light-knit sweaters with a turndown collar known as polo collar sweaters. They come with a one-to-three button placket that is similar to that of a polo shirt.

Polo collar sweaters are usually lightweight. This makes them ideal for the summer weather, particularly on the tennis court. You can also layer them under heavier sweater styles during cold months.

Business Casual Jeans Men Can Wear to Work

Brief History of Business Casual

The concept of business casual emerged in the 1990s as a response to the traditional formal dress code of the corporate world. The idea of dressing less formally at work was originally popularized by companies in the Silicon Valley tech industry, such as Apple, which allowed employees to wear jeans to work. Over time, the trend was solidified by Google in marketing their Dockers brand, and has since spread to many other industries.

Today, business casual is a common dress code in many offices. The history of business casual is closely tied to the evolution of the workplace, with companies recognizing the need for a more relaxed and comfortable dress code that still maintains a level of professionalism. This shift has allowed each person to express their personal style while adhering to workplace norms.

Are Jeans Business Casual?

The line has been blurred between professional attire and everyday clothing. Business casual wear can now include jeans, but not all settings have jeans allowed.

So how do you know if jeans are business casual?

Ask yourself questions about the business setting you will be attending. What is appropriate for this particular event? Who are the attendees, and what image do you want to create? The answers will dictate whether you can wear jeans in the professional set

Once you have determined that jeans are an acceptable option, consider the fit, color, fabric, style, and overall appearance of the jeans you choose:

 • Fit: Make sure your jeans are complementary to your body shape. They should not be too tight or too loose. Well-fitted jeans or a relaxed fit is better than a loose fit or skinny jeans. There are exceptions to all of these statements, as skinny jeans can look quite professional if paired with the correct shirt and shoes. The importance of stretch for comfort and flexibility cannot be overstated, as it allows for ease of movement without compromising fit. Additionally, ensure a comfortable fit in the crotch area to avoid any discomfort throughout the day. A perfect fit at the waist is crucial to cater to different body types, ensuring both comfort and style. Ensure that the back pockets are comfortable and functional, avoiding any uncomfortable stitching.
 • Color: While denim can be dyed any color, most jeans are blue or black. Blue might be more acceptable during the day, while black or anthracite is often better for night or the fall and winter season. Black can also be more formal than blue jeans. It depends on the event and the jeans.
 • Fabric: Today’s jeans come in a range of fabric types from raw denim to soft tencel denim. While rough denim can hold a fresh-pressed look, softer denim choices like tencel denim look more like trousers and are often more suitable for business casual looks. Jeans made with woven fibers can enhance comfort and fit, providing a better overall experience.
 • Style: Generally speaking, jeans should not be distressed with holes or tears even if they are designed for the distressed look. Much like traditional business casual wear, jeans worn to work or business meetings should be neat and untorn. Pants with holes or frays are better suited for casual settings.
 • Overall appearance: Business casual jeans should look professional. This was once an oxymoron and impossible to achieve, but today’s jeans are not the rough and tough Levis 501s of the past. The overall appearance of your jeans should fit in with traditional business casual attire. Fading can significantly affect the overall look of the jeans, with excessive fading giving them a distressed appearance that may be unappealing in a professional setting.

Which Jeans Are Appropriate for Work?

What types of jeans are appropriate for the office? Understanding which jeans are suitable can help you navigate the business casual dress code with ease.

Acceptable Jeans for the Office

 1. Dark Wash Jeans: These are often the safest bet for office wear. Dark blue or black jeans with minimal fading or distressing can provide a polished look, especially when paired with a blazer or a crisp shirt.
 2. Fitted or Tapered Fit Jeans: Opt for jeans that complement your body shape without being too tight or baggy. A tapered fit provides a modern silhouette that works well with various types of office wear.
 3. All Cotton Jeans: Jeans made from 100% cotton offer a classic look and feel. They tend to be more durable and can maintain their shape throughout the day, making them a practical choice for long office hours.
 4. High-End or Designer Jeans: Investing in a pair of premium jeans can elevate your business casual attire. Look for features like contrast stitching and high-quality fabric that convey a sense of professionalism.

Jeans to Avoid in the Workplace

 1. Distressed Jeans: While fashionable, jeans with holes, tears, or heavy fading are generally not suitable for a professional setting. They can appear too casual and detract from a polished appearance.
 2. Light Wash Jeans: Lighter shades of denim are often seen as more casual and may not fit the business casual criteria in many offices. Stick to darker hues for a more formal look.
 3. Baggy or Ill-Fitting Jeans: Overly loose jeans can give a sloppy impression. It’s important to choose a pair that fits well and complements your overall outfit.
 4. Jeans with Excessive Embellishments: Avoid jeans with too many embellishments, such as rhinestones or elaborate embroidery, as they can appear unprofessional in a business environment.

What to Pair with Business Casual Jeans

Integrating jeans into your work wardrobe requires a coordinated approach to ensure you maintain a professional appearance. Here are some combos that can work very effectively.

Can I wear jeans with…

…a Polo Shirt?

Wearing jeans with a polo shirt creates a relaxed yet professional business casual outfit. Opt for dark blue or black jeans to keep the look polished. A well-fitted polo shirt adds a touch of sophistication, while still being comfortable for a day at the office. Pair with clean sneakers or loafers to maintain a neat appearance.

…a Button Down Dress Shirt?

Pairing jeans with a dress shirt and no jacket is a simple way to achieve a business casual look. Choose dark wash jeans and a crisp, well-fitted shirt for a neat appearance. This combination is perfect for workplaces that allow jeans, offering a balance of comfort and professionalism. Add a stylish belt and polished shoes to complete the ensemble.

…a Sport Jacket?

Sport jackets work well with jeans because they have structured shoulders and a tailored fit, which add a formal touch to casual denim. Dark wash jeans with a tapered fit pair nicely with the jacket’s clean lines, creating a balanced look. Adding a crisp shirt completes the outfit, making it ideal for offices that allow jeans.

..a Blazer?

Pairing jeans with blazers creates a stylish business casual look. Blazers have a more structured and formal design compared to sports jackets, with features like padded shoulders and tailored cuts that add a polished touch to jeans. This combination works well in offices that allow jeans, offering a neat yet comfortable outfit. Choose dark blue or black jeans with a tapered fit to match the blazer’s sharp appearance for a cohesive look.

…a Suit Jacket?

Pairing a suit jacket with jeans gives you a stylish and professional look. Choose dark, fitted jeans and match them with a simple, well-tailored jacket. Avoid jackets with bold patterns or shiny materials, as they can make the outfit look less professional.

When You Can’t Wear Denim

While business casual has become more flexible, there are still instances where wearing jeans is not appropriate. In certain workplaces and events, adhering to a more formal dress code is essential to convey professionalism and respect.

 • Traditional or conservative workplaces may have strict guidelines that do not accept jeans.
 • High-stakes meetings, formal presentations, or events with clients may require more formal attire, such as a suit and tie.
 • Opting for slacks or chinos is a safer choice in environments where jeans are not suitable.
 • Understanding your workplace’s expectations and the nature of the event is crucial in determining appropriate attire.
 • When in doubt, choose more formal clothing to ensure you meet dress code requirements.

Final Thoughts on Wearing Jeans to Work

Incorporating jeans into your business casual wardrobe can be a game-changer, offering both comfort and style. As the workplace evolves, so does the acceptance of more relaxed attire, allowing each person to showcase their unique flair without compromising professionalism. ]]>
In the world of fashion. There are two approaches to building a wardrobe. You can chase the latest trends, tossing out clothes when they are “out of season,” or slowly and thoughtfully building a wardrobe of timeless styles that will make you look good for years.

Building a wardrobe that lasts is all about forgetting fast fashion. You can pick up a few pieces from the latest designer releases. Your choices should be based on what they add to your overall wardrobe instead of mindlessly following trends and throwing them away just as quickly.

Leaving Behind Fast Fashion

Fast Fashion is the idea that you should always wear the latest and abandon styles just as quickly. It is the idea that you should never wear the same dress to two different parties, or be seen in a print that was popular last year. Fortunately, most people mature past fast fashion as they mature gracefully into adulthood. Fast fashion may be fine for teenagers who are growing so quickly that they phase through clothing anyway. However, the value of a more timeless and lasting wardrobe comes with maturity.

Sustainability Concerns

In addition to the inconvenience and expense of fast fashion, it’s also important to remember that throwing away out-of-season clothes is wasteful. In a time when sustainability is a paramount priority, finding clothes that last is far more important than wearing only the runway latest.

Building a Timelessly Flattering Wardrobe

The best strategy for any adult looking to build an elegant yet functional wardrobe is to plan for the long term. You are looking not for the latest trends, but for timeless styles where every piece flatters your shape and complexion. Also, you can combine pieces in different ways to create unique outfits that all reflect your style.

Timeless wardrobe selection involves more conservative choices, such as button-down shirts and knit sweaters that combine well with other layers. Women benefit from a few skirts and blouses that can make any outfit a little more dressy. Also, the dresses that never go out of style. Men and women benefit from form-flattering trousers for a business-casual look and a few pairs of nice jeans for well-dressed adventures.

Dress shirts are a staple for men and make nice business-casual overshirts for women. But you should also keep a few nice-quality T-shirts and polos for casual events where you still want to look your best.

Custom Tailored Clothing That Lasts for Years

Another important consideration is the quality of each piece you add to your wardrobe. High-quality fabrics, design, and construction of each piece of clothing will make a difference in how well it holds up over the years. You may wear a shirt of tightly woven fabric and well-constructed seams a few times a year for a decade or more. On the other hand, a tissue-thin event t-shirt may fall apart after just a few wearings.

Even lightweight women’s clothing can last when you consider the quality.

There are three ways to ensure your clothing is well-built and will become a long-term part of your wardrobe. The first is to avoid fast-fashion pieces where the manufacturers know you will throw away the piece in a season or two. These tend to have lighter stitching and are often made of the flimsiest material that will support the style.

The second method is to touch and examine clothing bought off the rack. Your hands can often tell you more than your eyes in terms of the quality of fabric and seams.

The third is to have your clothing put together by a custom tailor known for their quality work.

Building a Wardrobe One Piece or Outfit at a Time

Building a wardrobe that is built to last is not assembled in a single shopping trip or fashion season. It comes together over time and is usually most successful with trained sales associates. They can help you select options that are best suited to your needs, body type, and coloring. You may discover the perfect-fitting polo and buy five of them in different colors to populate casual outfits for years. Or you may have one formal outfit custom-tailored. Once that outfit joins your wardrobe, you can pull it out when you’re ready to impress at future formal occasions. You can also mix the pieces to enhance other formal ensembles.

Men often discover the perfect brand and size for daily dress shirts and slacks. Women often select one timeless and flattering piece from each fashion season and combine it with many different outfits in the future. This has been a hot trend for a short time and an elegant addition to their wardrobe for years.

The key is to learn how to identify quality, what looks and feels best on you, and assemble your wardrobe based on those values. In a few years, you will have a comprehensive wardrobe of timeless and flattering clothing. This will represent your style and look good compared to any fast fashion trend.

Custom Tailored Timeless Fashions With Family Britches

At Family Britches, you will find timelessly fashionable ensembles of lasting quality, ready to become long-term elements of your growing wardrobe. We also offer custom-made-to-measure tailoring so that every piece fits you perfectly when it arrives and flatters your form for years of elegant outfit assembly.

The post Curating a Professional Men’s Office Wardrobe for 2023: Upgrade Your Office Wardrobe Post-Pandemic appeared first on Family Britches.

The coronavirus pandemic changed the way we work. Many offices went to a work-from-home model, leaving employees across the world unsure of what to do with their office wardrobes. Fast forward to 2023, and many offices are slowly beginning to return to normal with hybrid or in-person office environments. It’s important to start thinking about revamping your office wardrobe. After months of working from home in loungewear and spending the day in slippers, it can be difficult to go back to a wardrobe consisting of business casual clothing. With offices gradually beginning to open and Zoom meetings with colleagues still taking place, many men are questioning what pieces should they keep and which should they get rid of as they begin to put together their post-pandemic wardrobe.

Taking Inventory

If you haven’t shopped for office attire in a while, it can feel daunting and stressful. But, the key to a well-dressed post-pandemic office wardrobe is to focus on the basics and not reinvent your entire closet. Assemble items you already have or simply purchase pieces to freshen up your wardrobe. To make the transition easier, let’s look at some key pieces of clothing you will need to successfully upgrade your post-pandemic wardrobe.

Determine What You Already Have

First and foremost, you need to determine what you will need in your office wardrobe. Knowing your situation and making an honest assessment will make sure that you have a wardrobe appropriate for what your job requires. When creating your post-pandemic wardrobe, think about how often you will be working from home and the number of in-office days. That way you can buy just the right amount of clothing for the appropriate occasions. It is best to start by curating and building on items you already own, and then work your way into updating and filling in the gaps. Having some simple, timeless, and classic pieces of clothing is key and will help you maintain a stylish and professional office wardrobe.

Determine What You Need

You should also make sure to invest in items of good quality and in a color and pattern that will be flattering to you. This isn’t to say that you need to buy designer clothing. Investing in high-quality pieces is often more economical in the long run. Well-made clothing also helps you feel more confident, which is essential when dressing for success.

Purchase the Basics

Firstly, think of getting shirts with breathable fabric like cotton or linen. These shirts should be appropriate for the workplace and must look good. Select styles that are timeless like classic button-ups and collared polos. These shirts can complement casual trousers or can be coordinated with a sports jacket.

Secondly, cotton trousers should be your go-to piece. The best choices are cotton khakis or chinos or neutrals like grey, beige, or navy. They can be dressed up or down depending on the situation.

Lastly, footwear plays an essential role in your wardrobe. Depending on your office culture and what looks best with the clothing you already have, decide whether dress shoes like loafers, or classic Oxfords, are appropriate. Don’t be afraid to have a pair of sneakers on hand. These will look great with trousers and can easily be swapped with dressier shoes.

Once you have all the key pieces you need for a new wardrobe, you can then start to focus on the more exciting accessories. For example, ties and pocket squares are an excellent way to bring a pop of color and show your style. Blazers can also bring some interest to your office wardrobe. They can make you comfortable in both the boardroom and on a night out.

Traveling to the Office or Around the World?

No matter if you’re traveling or just traveling to the office, your wardrobe needs to be on point. For the office, It’s always worth investing in a good quality suit, as this is a staple piece of any professional wardrobe. Opt for a classic cut and fabric that won’t go out of fashion any time soon. If you plan on traveling for work, easy-care button-down shirts, shoes that slip on and off easily, and a versatile business casual jacket- with pockets for easy access to your passport and boarding pass-, will complete your travel ensemble. When purchasing for the office or travel, make sure to invest in quality materials and fabrics that are going to last and hold up over time.

Casual Menswear

When it comes to casual menswear, having the right pieces in your wardrobe is essential for looking professional and stylish. Our inventory has an extensive collection of menswear staples. Choose from dress trousers, polo shirts, blazers, and luxurious accessories like leather belts and deerskin gloves. We can provide personalized recommendations to build tailored to you to your needs.

Business Casual

Business casual for men typically consists of patterned or Oxford button-down shirts, sweaters and sweater vests, cardigans, dress slacks or dark jeans, tailored blazers, colorful socks, and leather belts. Whether business casual, business professional, or even ensure that the clothing is well-tailored and made of high-quality materials.

You’ve put on your cap and gown, walked at graduation, and are now ready to start the next biggest chapter in your life: entering the professional workforce. Before you start, you will need to invest in some business casual & professional clothes to wear to the office. While you might be scared to leave the athleisure behind for what can be a more expensive and unfamiliar wardrobe, it is very easy to find high-quality, budget-friendly pieces.

One thing to keep in mind is that you’ll need a few different types of clothing. While the office will be more formal, you should also add some staple casual pieces for spending time with coworkers outside of work.

Below are some tips on what you need to add to your wardrobe, and how to find them at a good price.

Tops

Arguably, what you choose to wear on your top half is the most important part of an outfit. It will be the first thing someone notices when you walk into a room. For that reason, there are a few key types of shirts you will want to purchase.

Starting from the first layer, you will want to invest in nice undershirts. It’s easy to find undershirts in multipacks, and of high quality as well. It’s important to find undershirts that will both stay tucked in and be comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

The star of the show, however, is the dress shirt. It may be difficult to wrap your head around investing in multiple nice dress shirts right off the bat when buying business casual clothes, but this item is a non-negotiable must-have. Many online blogs say that you should buy seven dress shirts to begin, although if you can afford to buy more that would help diversify your wardrobe week-to-week. Keep the colors neutral, primarily whites and blues. These colors go with everything and are quite versatile. When you buy keep in mind that the wrist of a dress shirt should feel a little looser than a watch, and be about two centimeters from your wrist.

For more casual days, stick to sports shirts. Sports shirts can include certain button-ups and polos, and usually do not wrinkle as easily as a normal dress shirt. You won’t need as many of these shirts as you do dress shirts. Owning sports shirts is a good idea for any casual company event, such as Casual Fridays or work parties. Nice polos also function well for golf outings.

Bottoms

Nice properly fitted pants are an absolute must for any college graduate looking for business casual clothes. Men’s casual trousers should have a decent amount of stretch, not only for comfort but also to prevent an embarrassing rip in the office. Ordering pants online or in a store can lead to them not fitting quite right, so this is an item you should definitely consider taking to a tailor or getting them altered to fit your body and preferences.

Pants follow a similar rule as shirts for colors, just darker. Keeping your dress pants black, grey and blue ensures that they match your wardrobe in any situation. For a more casual look, investing in a quality pair of men’s jeans is the way to go. Make sure they fit you well and opt for darker denim to better match your shirts.

Accessories

While business casual clothes are important, the accessories can make or break a piece. They also allow you to show your own personality and branch off from the muted colors listed above. A fun patterned tie is still business casual while also bringing vibrance to your outfit. Opting for a skinny tie if you have a more slender figure is very modern and helps flatter your shape.

Shoes also fall into the accessory category and can be one of the toughest purchases. You can never go wrong with a traditional pair of black oxford shoes as your main work shoe. Since this is the piece you will be using the most, you should be willing to splurge. No one wants to spend every day in agony over their shoes pinching their feet.

Finish off your look with a sharp but sleek belt and a gold watch, and you will blend into the office the moment you walk through the door.

Knowing what business casual clothes to invest in can be tricky. While the staples listed above can be found at almost every office in America, you may find that your office varies a bit from traditional. When you go in for an interview, try to pay attention to what the other office members are wearing. You can always seek out a local stylist for help as well.

All across the nation, the average workplace is becoming more casual. But that doesn’t always mean you can wear jeans and a t-shirt to your place of employment. Even if your office has embraced casual business wear, you still need to put effort into how you look.

Traditionally, men’s professional business attire was a fairly safe bet. You’d coordinate a two-piece suit, match it with a tie and dress shirt, and you’d be good to go. But these were the simpler days.

As the industry now embraces the more relaxed business casual dress code, finding appropriate attire has become more daunting than ever. The idea is to achieve a perfect balance – to dress appropriately without appearing too stiff … to be casual without being too casual.

If you find it all a little baffling, this article is for you. We shall go over all the fundamental do’s and don’ts you should consider as you make the transition to casual.

Business casual Do’s

If done right, men’s business casual clothing can be a stylish and highly versatile look. You can wear the same outfit for both formal and non-formal occasions, like a client meeting and then a dinner date right after. But the key here is “done right.”

A few tweaks you can make right off the bat include wearing the suit without the tie or blending your blazers with different colored pants.

Here are a few other do’s to get you started.

Do…Make sure your clothing fits properly

Whether your closet is full of premium men’s suits or you’re more of a button-down and casual men’s pants kind of guy, your clothing still needs to fit you as it should.

In 2016, a study found that American men over the age of 18 spent $85 per month on menswear, but even an expensive jacket can look cheap if you don’t tailor it to your proportions. Overly baggy shirts or too-short pants can completely ruin any positive impression you’re trying to make.

If you’re embracing casual business wear, you still need the fit to be impeccable.

Do…Look around at what people are wearing

Perhaps the most understated way of knowing what to wear is by simply looking around at what people are wearing in your office. This usually sets the tone and will tell you what is acceptable and what isn’t. Are most people in chinos and button-down shirts, or are the majority of guys wearing jeans and plain white tees?

If it’s all too random, you can ask someone in the company’s HR department for advice or higher-ups on what business casual clothing best represents the company’s brand or, better yet, what is totally unacceptable.

Do…Dress down your formal business attire

Rather than thinking of “business casual” as putting a jacket over your jeans and t-shirt, you need to find ways to make your professional clothes a bit less stuffy.

That means starting with a formal suit and dressing down from there. You can easily swap out dress pants for nicely tailored chinos or corduroy trousers. Usually, a collared button-down shirt is still considered to be casual business wear, but you can swap it out for a nice polo shirt in summer. A tweed jacket can be a welcome break from a more formal suit jacket.

But be careful not to abandon those more formal staples completely; you can easily mix and match them with other items to get longevity out of your wardrobe.

Do…Wear clean, wrinkle-free attire

This should be a no-brainer. Whether or not you’re in a business environment, It is vital that you keep your clothes clean and wrinkle-free. This shows that, even though you’re business casual, you still care about how you present yourself professionally.

Keep in mind that it only takes 1/10 of a second to create a first impression. You don’t want it to be a wrinkly one, do you?

Do…wear smart pants

While business casual means veering away from suits and dress pants, not just any casual pants will suffice. You want to go for smart pants. Think chino pants, a decent pair of khakis, or business casual jeans. You can also go for cotton pants, as long as they are well-pressed and clean.

Do…Stick to the classics

Select outfit combinations are a staple in the business casual community. This means they have been tried and proven suitable in almost every business environment. One good example is the smart pants with long-sleeved shirt combination. You can pair this with a jacket or a well-cut blazer and a pair of Oxfords.

The trick here is investing in quality pieces that complement your physique. Consider tailor-made fits for your shirts and trousers. A good tailor will advise on what design and fabric will suit you best.

Business casual don’ts

The danger of business casual clothing is that it’s easy to overdo the casual bit and dress down too much. The rule of thumb here is to lean more on the professional side whenever in doubt. It’s always better to overdress than underdress.

Here are some other key pieces you should avoid.

Don’t…Wear loud patterns or excessive accessories

Basically, you want to avoid anything too bold and bright or too showy. This can be an overly bright tie, branded shirt, or cargo pants with excess pockets. A simple pair of chinos will serve you better while still pulling off the casual look.

The more simple and neutral your clothes are, the more elegant your look appears. Colors like white, tan, black, and blue never go out of style.

On the same note, avoid being too casual with your accessories. Go for a leather messenger bag instead of a backpack. Or match your belt to your shoes. It’s the small details that bring your ensemble together.

Don’t…Wear sneakers to work

Some men see “casual” and automatically think that sneakers are fine. Contrary to popular belief, however, sneakers do not belong in a casual business environment. Regardless of how great your new ‘kicks’ look, you’d do better to save your athletic wear for the gym or weekends. Needless to say, the same applies to sandals or slip-on.

Loafers and oxfords, for example, are versatile and look just as good with a suit as they do with jeans and a polo shirt. That makes them a great investment. It’s best to have both black and brown options to cover your bases.

Choosing your footwear as a finishing touch can make your outfit look complete (or can completely derail your look, if chosen poorly).

Don’t…Wear mismatched clothing

As related to the previous entry, the worst thing you can wear to work is a mismatched outfit. Some obvious examples are a hoodie with dress pants or sneakers with anything official.

Of course, this is not to say that you shouldn’t mix things up. By all means … try that cardigan and collar-shirt combination, but do it in front of a mirror first. Even better, seek a second opinion.

Don’t…Be afraid to mix it up

While you should generally stay away from ensembles that look too casual, that doesn’t mean you have to restrict your style. A high-quality knit can be a great alternative or even a supplement to a button-down and jacket.

And although you shouldn’t look outlandish, you can also be a little freer with color and pattern options with a business casual look. Many top men’s clothing brands now cater to customers who want options that are slightly less formal, so it’s more common to see some deviation from the more boring basics.

Takeaway

The casual business style of dressing is rapidly becoming the new norm. To fit in, you have to quickly settle on a style that compliments you. A good place to start is dressing formally and then dressing it down bit by bit.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that “casual business wear” doesn’t mean you can wear whatever you want, in most cases. And ultimately, it’s better to be a bit overdressed than to look messy.

At the same time, you have to get the right fit. A bespoke, well-tailored outfit will almost instantly transform your everyday outfit into a statement piece.

By utilizing more formal wardrobe basics and mixing them with slightly more casual elements — and working with an experienced tailor to ensure everything fits properly — you’ll look professional in any situation. Contact us today for more professional insights and business casual clothes for men.

The post Men’s Guide to Styling With Shorts appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
When the hot summer months start, it’s time for every man to switch from trousers to shorts. However, for most guys, styling with shorts is a tricky fashion choice as they simply can’t tell what to wear them with. This is why most men prefer to wear shorts only indoors, as they are unsure of how to style up when stepping out.

This post aims to make things less confusing by suggesting some fashionable styling tips you can try out. Dig in!

What to Wear Shorts With

Shorts come in different designs, colors, shapes, and sizes. While some are smart-casual and are okay to wear to the office, others are only ideal for taking a stroll at the beach. When styling with shorts, the rule of thumb is always to wear a shirt, socks, shoes, or accessories that match the vibe of your shorts.

Shirts

Shorts are casual, and so should be the shirts they are paired with. For your fabric shorts, wear them with a polo, v-neck, or short-sleeve, button-down shirt. Avoid long-sleeved, button-fronted, collared shirts as much as possible, as they are too much of a stylistic mix, even with the sleeves rolled up.

T-shirts are easy to match with shorts as they go together so well, creating a simple yet effective style. If you want to add some sophistication, try layering up with a button-up shirt over the T-shirt.

A Two-Piece Set

A two-piece short suit, or a casual set, is a wardrobe staple. These matching outfits are ideal for dinner parties or a night out at the club. However, note that most two-piece sets are bold and in your face. Therefore, if you are ready to embrace the spotlight and flaunt your wild side, this trend is perfect for you.

Shoes

When styling with shorts, the most popular casual shoes include slip-on and laced Vans. Some simple, low-top canvas sneakers are also a comfortable choice for most men. You could also wear your nice pair of shorts with slip-on loafers or boaters. Sandals are generally the most casual option: okay for a casual stroll at the beach but highly inappropriate for a graduation party.

Socks

The general rule of thumb is to avoid long socks when styling with shorts. This is why it’s best to skip any shoes requiring long socks or looking awkward without socks.

Ankle socks work well with most shoes worn with shorts. They can help keep you comfortable if you aren’t used to wearing shoes without socks. If you want to wear sandals, avoid wearing socks underneath unless you are targeting an extremely custom look.

Accessories

You can elevate your look using the following accessories:

 • Watches. A watch is a critical element of a grown man’s summer style. Choose one that’s simple, durable, and functional.
 • A pair of sunglasses. Men’s sunglasses are also some of the most popular summertime accessories. To complement your summer look, wear sunglasses that perfectly fit your face.
 • Hats. You should also step out of your comfort zone and try wearing a hat to add to your sophistication and culture. A hat is a statement piece and the perfect topper for any look.

How to Wear Shorts to Every Occasion

Shorts are versatile and will keep you cool and comfortable this summer, regardless of where you are headed. Consider trying out some of the outfits below:

 1. Stretch cotton shirts are a summer staple. They are ideal for any occasion, and their breathability and stretch fabrication ensure you remain cool and comfortable throughout the day. Try pairing them with a linen shirt and boat shoes to achieve the ultimate smart-casual vibes.
 2. When it’s time to hit the bar, you can wear your khaki shorts with a burgundy print shirt. This look goes well with sleek, minimalistic leather, traditional canvas sneakers.
 3. Denim shorts are perfect for casual under the sun, whether at the beach, bar, or BBQ. The most obvious garment to wear them with is a T-shirt, but you could switch things up with a nice linen shirt. Complete the look with a slip-on shoe or a laced sneaker, and you are ready for a fun summer evening.
 4. If you want to keep things simple and effortlessly chilled, you can never go wrong with a pair of linen shorts. This breathable material is perfect for a smart-casual event or an evening stroll. Pair these versatile shorts with a light shirt or T-shirt and some sandals.

As evident, shorts do not always have to be plain and boring. At Family Britches, we strive to create timeless and outstanding looks for the modern man. Discover custom-tailored, high-fashion clothing with us for the perfect summer wardrobe.

The post Decoding Dress Codes: A Guide to Formal Attire appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
From attending black-tie formal occasions to building the right business-casual wardrobe, you want to look your best. The dress code for any situation is built into the very core of the event. What you wear to a wedding, an opera, or a business meeting will display your mastery of the occasion with style and aplomb. Of course, most people don’t grow up automatically knowing the nuances of formal attire.

If you’re wondering about the subtle differences between black-tie events, formal events, and business casual attire, we are here to help. All you need are a few pointers to help you choose the right suit, dress, or ensemble to make a graceful entrance and look elegantly dressed for any occasion.

This is your guide to formal attire, from black-tie to business casual, including high-end fashion choices for men and women.

Black-Tie Formal Attire

Black-tie events are exceedingly formal. They tend to involve a dress code of tuxedos and long, elegant gowns.

Tuxedos

Gentlemen will wear a tuxedo, featuring a black jacket, vest, and trousers, a pressed white tuxedo dress shirt, and a black bow tie. White-tie events are rare and even more formal, involving a white bow tie and sometimes white tuxedo jackets, pants, and vests.

Not all tuxedos are identical. Most tuxedos have a notch label, but you may notice that some have double-breasted. Your collar may be a traditional notched collar, a peak lapel, or a shawl-style collar.

The accessories worn with a tuxedo can mark your style and make you stand out. These include your choice of shirt, tie, socks, shoes, and cufflinks. Consider the event’s theme and the date when selecting color variations.

Gowns and Women’s Tuxes

Ladies will wear formal gowns at black-tie events, but a women’s tuxedo may also be appropriate, depending on the event and the lady. Gowns tend to be full-length and feature matte or satin fabrics rather than sparkle and flash. Women’s accessories are more noticeable, including a wide range of flattering jewelry, gloves, shoes, shawls or wraps, and handbags to match the occasion.

Footwear

Both men and women should wear polished shoes appropriate for the occasion.

Formal Event Attire

Most formal events call for dark-colored suits, but ladies may explore a wide range of dresses in styles determined by the season and occasion.

Dark Suits

At this level of formality, gentlemen will select a dark suit, but the color depends on their personality and the event theme. Black, charcoal, and navy blue are all traditional colors. Gentlemen can also match their suit color to the event’s theme or the dress color their date will wear.

Lighter-colored suits are more festive and casual and more suitable for daytime events.

Suit vests are optional and dress shirts, while often white, can also be a pale color that compliments the color of the suit. Gentlemen can be more creative with their choice of tie and socks but should wear formal shoes.

Dresses, Ensembles, and Pantsuits

In a formal event, women are invited to wear gowns, dresses, skirt ensembles, or pantsuits. The available styles vary widely, but fabrics should be smooth and pressed.

The length of your dress can be determined by the occasion and the time of day. Cocktail parties and afternoon events can welcome shorter, knee-length skirts, while late-night events are more likely to feature full-length gowns. Ensembles of blouses and skirts are acceptable if they are suitably formal in combination, or a lady can choose a formal pantsuit in a similar style to the gentlemen.

Formal footwear also features a wider range for ladies and may include open-toed shoes of suitable elegance.

Business Casual Attire

Navigating business casual offers the most options, but may also be more challenging. Business-causal has similar rules for men and women regarding color, fabric, and the ensembles that can be put together.

Shirts and Sport Coats

Starting with the shirt, business casual attire can include a wide range of fabrics, provided they are tightly woven and well-pressed. Knits, polos, henleys, dress shirts, and modest blouses are appropriate. You can also make a business-causal look slightly more formal with a structured or unstructured sports coat, a vest, or a formal sweater.

Business Casual Pants

The right pants for business-casual attire include trousers, slacks, and (sometimes) nice blue jeans.

 • Trousers – Trousers are formal pants that one might wear with a suit. They are often wool or a wool blend with a quarter top pocket and a crease down the center seam of the leg.
 • Slacks – Casual slacks tend to be cotton, linen, or a nice synthetic blend. They are more relaxed but with a formal cut and style, often with a quarter-top pocket.
 • Jeans – High-quality blue jeans are sometimes acceptable. Favor darker blues that are undamaged (no holes or wear) and all one color.
 • Skirts – Ladies can combine a blouse or business casual shirt with a nice skirt from knee to ankle length. Pencil and A-line skirts are best, but maxi skirts may be appropriate in some work environments.

Dresses

Ladies may wear a dress in a business-casual setting, provided the dress is suitably business-like. Pressed fabrics and smooth, professional lines are still appropriate, avoiding more casual or festive styles like sundresses, cocktail dresses, or sequins.

Footwear

Your footwear should match the style of your clothes. The color of your shoes should match the color of your belt. Leather and solid synthetic shoes are usually appropriate, but some workplaces allow high-end boots or canvas sneakers. Your socks, however, can be entirely original and reflect your style.

The Formal Styles That Look Best on You

Finding an outfit that suits the occasion’s formality is important, but you should also seek out garments that make you look your best. Coordinate colors that flatter your complexion and garment styles tailored to your body’s natural shape. Everyone can look good in formal and business-casual attire with the right styles and a little custom tailoring.

You can find everything you need to build the perfect business-casual and formal wardrobe with made-to-measure tailored garments at Family Britches.

The post Caring for Cashmere in Wet, Snowy Weather appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
Cashmere is an incredibly supple and elegant fabric. With a touchable softness, it never fails to instill a charm and warmth that’s impossible to match. Wet cashmere, on the other hand, can be tricky to care for, as it can shrink or lose its softness if not dried properly. Like all specialty fabrics, getting the most from cashmere requires learning how it responds to different conditions – and above all, moisture.

What Makes Cashmere Perfect for Winter

Caring for your cashmere sweaterblazersplit neck polo, or other luxury garment requires understanding a little about cashmere’s material properties. Cashmere is a highly specialized yarn, chosen for its exceptional insulation. A single cashmere sweater requires the down undercoats of two Kashmir goats, grown over an entire winter in freezing, rugged terrain.

That’s the level of insulation cashmere’s wool-like fibers provide. Naturally, it makes a cashmere winter wardrobe a wise and inspired choice. Yet the very luxury of cashmere can instill a mild anxiety over wearing it in inclement weather (just when youwantto).

Consider first, however, that moisture is not the enemy; the fibers are made for it. It’s how you treat wet cashmere that’s important. With a few simple guidelines, there’s no need to be overly cautious about wearing cashmere in the snow or a light rain.

Basic Cashmere Care

Protecting cashmere involves a few strict general guidelines during the wet and snowy seasons:

 • Keep the soft, yielding fabric away from sharp edges, such as abrasive zippers and accessories.
 • Prevent direct contact with lotions and other skincare products, including perfume.
 • Always follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

Generally, those instructions entail either a cold, gentle wash cycle or handwashing for higher-quality materials (more on this later).

Another consideration is that having multiple cashmere items at your disposal can reduce overreliance on any single garment. A steady rotation will lower each item’s risk of damage, allowing you to wear cashmere to your heart’s content.

How to Safely Dry Cashmere

Since cashmere is perfectly safe from the water itself, you may not need to do anything. Unless treated roughly, simply wearing your cherished cashmere until dry won’t itself cause damage. If you’d prefer to dry the cashmere somewhere safe and out of the way, however, a few key pointers will help you retain your cashmere’s shape.

Whether caught in the rain or snow, drying cashmere is not as difficult as it might at first seem. Yet it does require diligence and patience until these habits become second nature. All it takes is a single careless oversight to permanently shrink or misshapen the centerpiece of your winter wardrobe.

Assuming your cashmere is only wetted with clean water, take the following steps as soon as you reasonably can:

 • Do not twist or wring cashmere, even if very thick. Stretching it could cause irreparable damage.
 • Also, refrain from hang-drying cashmere. Even the downward pull of gravity on wet cashmere is sometimes enough to pull it out of shape.
 • Only squeeze cashmere gently until it’s no longer soaking wet
 • Once free of excess water, air dry cashmere on a flat, horizontal surface.

To dry cashmere, lay it out smoothly on a towel. Shape the cashmere as you would any air-dried garment, minding where creases will form. Air drying increases the chance of wrinkles, so act quickly after removing damp cashmere.

Is “Tumble Dry Low” Acceptable?

It may seem well enough to simply “air fluff” cashmere in your dryer. However, the tumble dry cycle still runs the risk of twisting and stretching your prized garment. Dryers can also accumulate high levels of static electricity, even without heat. This can change the consistency of cashmere – its hallmark property.

If your cashmere’s tag or manufacturer instructions advise tumble drying on no or low heat, it may be safe enough (in which case, placing the cashmere in a sealed pillowcase can lend more protection). It all depends entirely on the quality of cashmere. Yet in our experience, it’s always best not to take unnecessary risks when cleaning or drying luxury fabrics. Unless sure otherwise, less is certainly more.

Preventative Measures

After your first time caring for sopping wet cashmere, you’ll know intuitively that it’s well worth preventing extra moisture in the first place. During colder weather, it doesn’t take more than occasionally brushing snow off your cashmere trench coat, sweater jacket, or other externally worn item.

Remember to do this when entering a car or other heated interior, especially if your cashmere is on under your winter outerwear. Then, you may want to open up the outer layers until any dampness is gone.

Caring for Wet Cashmere When Out

So what about particularly wet conditions while away from home? Then, pay extra caution to heed the principles discussed above for handling heavy, wet cashmere. If you must temporarily wear very wet cashmere, you can take two precautions to greatly reduce the potential for damage:

 1. Gently pull the material straight as needed, preventing bunched-up winter wear from causing stubborn wrinkles. Check for bunched fabric, pausing at any “pulling” sensation whenever sitting, standing, twisting, or otherwise quickly changing posture.
 2. Once you enter a dry and comfortable space, remove your cashmere and place it flat over a flat, clean (and horizontal) surface – possibly with a more water-resistant garment underneath. Do not hang wet cashmere over a chair.

Keeping cashmere safein the snow or rain doesn’t require a major time investment, although it does require consistency. At the end of winter, you might also consider sealing your cashmere for safekeeping. Master these tips, and enjoy many long years of warmth, comfort, and grace from your cashmere.

The post A Guide to Men’s Workwear When Working From Home appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
Working from home is a reality for more and more people. For most people who work from home, staying comfortable is a top priority, especially since they are often stationed in an office chair for most of the day. However, one should never sacrifice professionalism for the sake of comfort. After all, you don’t want to pop up on a conference call with co-workers clad in a faded workout tank top and lounge shorts. When it comes to work-from-home clothing, striking the right balance between comfort and professionalism is essential.

This guide will help you craft comfortable yet stylish work-from-home clothing. With a little bit of planning and some coordination, you’ll be able to present a professional image at work all while remaining cozy, warm, and relaxed.

Consider upgrading your loungewear

Loungewear is the chosen uniform of many work-from-home employees. It’s easy to grab a favorite pair of sweatpants or joggers after your morning coffee and before you sit down for a busy day of work at your desk. However, your old loungewear might not look professional on video calls. To stay comfortable while looking put-together, consider upgrading your loungewear.

There are many options for clothing that feel like loungewear but look stylish. Consider performance fabric basics in place of old sweatpants, for a look that feels distinguished yet laid-back. Try non-standard colors for a polished look and more mix-and-match options in your wardrobe.

Keep a stylish hoodie or cardigan on hand

There’s nothing wrong with wearing a cozy T-shirt while working from home. However, when you get pulled into a quick conference call, you might wish you were wearing something more professional. Keeping a classic cardigan or pullover sweater next to your desk for such situations can be a lifesaver. Stylish outwear pieces like these can make you look well-groomed, prepared, and polished, and are easy to keep on hand all week long.

To really make an impression on your coworkers, try keeping several options near your desk. A cashmere shacket provides the ultimate comfort, while a ribbed full-zip is slightly more casual but still professional.

Distinguish between work-from-home-clothing and off-duty attire

Any work-from-home veteran will tell you that it’s vital to distinguish between your off-duty look and your work look. These should be totally different wardrobes. There are psychological reasons behind this. When you slip into your weekend wear, you’re signaling to your brain that it’s time to relax and unwind, while putting your work clothes on can trigger your mind into “work mode,” where you’ll be more productive and ready to take on your daily tasks.

For this reason, keep a separate space in your closet or dresser for workwear. Shop for new pieces on occasion, even if you rarely see any of your co-workers in person. Just the act of putting on a new piece of clothing can make you feel better about yourself, which can positively affect your performance at work. Also, don’t allow yourself to fall into the habit of wearing pieces that don’t fit or have tatters or rips. Take care of your workwear and invest in good-quality pieces that will go the distance with you.

Work-from-home clothing suggestions

If you feel overwhelmed by the options, pare down your work wardrobe to a few capsule pieces. Here are some outfit suggestions that will keep you looking ultra-presentable on all your regular conference calls:

Be sure to choose some items in neutral colors and others in bright, flattering shades that look good on you. Above all, choose what makes you feel confident. Any of these outfit options can be mixed and matched with each other, so you can create countless new looks without dedicating additional time or resources.

An essential factor determining the ideal outfit for a particular game day is the prevailing weather. When outdoors, the weather is, in most cases, unpredictable, and thus, it is always essential to dress in layers. This allows you to adjust your outfit according to the temperature.

A classic option for men includes a stylish bomber jacket or a versatile Gregor outdoor windproof sweater. However, your fashionable jacket should complement your overall look. In addition, ensure that the colors of your jacket match your team’s colors or remain neutral if you are not supporting any of the team playing.

Rock on Your Team’s Gear

You can’t go wrong with wearing your team’s gear. Wearing a sports team-inspired jersey or T-shirt makes you look sharp and helps you connect with fellow fans. A pair of trim-fit chinos with a classic team jersey or stretch Oxford shirt in a team’s color is perfect for guys yearning for a mature and professional look.

Complete the look by rocking comfortable, stylish sneakers, athletic shoes, or Chelsea boots. Having comfy sneakers is crucial, as you will be on your feet walking and cheering throughout the game.

Accessories

Don’t forget to carry sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun rays while adding a cool touch to your outfit. Other essential accessories that you should have on a sunny day include a baseball cap with your team’s logo or hat to avoid the sun’s glare and sunscreen to protect your skin.

To add a personal touch to your outfit, you can wear a stylish wristwatch, a necklace with your team’s emblem, and your team’s wristband. A stylish, lightweight scarf with your team’s colors or logo, a pair of gloves, and a warm knit beanie is ideal for keeping you warm during cold weather. You can easily remove them when the temperature rises.

Stay Comfy With Casual Jeans, Shorts, or Joggers

Comfortable joggers, shorts, plain V-neck tees, knit henley shirts, seamless polos, and wool sneakers are gaining popularity as men’s athleisure for vegging out yet still looking stylish. Wearing breathable and comfortable garments allows you to move freely or easily stand up and sit back down to cheer. Ladies can opt for loungewear and athleisure clothing. This includes yoga pants, joggers, or legging with a hoodie or joggers and a turtleneck.

Crossbody Bag or Backpack

It is essential to have a sleek backpack or crossbody bag to carry your items or accessories. Besides providing secure storage for essentials, a crossbody bag or backpack keeps your hands free when cheering. However, it is vital to carry a sizeable bag as some stadiums have set strict policies regarding bag sizes and styles.

Count on Flannel Shirts to Save the Day

When deciding what to wear to capture the right sharp but casual profile when attending a football match, you can’t lose with a long sleeve flannel shirt. Flannel shirts are versatile wardrobe staples for both men and women as they are comfy, cute, and cozy. Although flannel shirts are considered boring, they are numerous ways to raise the intrigue of these tops to make them classic and trendy.

Women can get classic in flannel by layering them over a pair of high-waisted jeans with a fitted crop top. Another option is to rock on white high-waisted pants or shorts and an off-the-shoulder top, then tie the flannel around the waist. Finally, a flannel shirt is an excellent layering piece. They can be worn as a light overshirt on hot days. It can also be worn over a T-shirt for cold weather protection.

Are you planning a summer getaway but dreading the packing process? Packing for any type of trip can be stressful, especially if you’re trying to fit everything into one suitcase. But with some easy-to-follow hacks, you can ensure you retain your fashionable style for your vacation capsule wardrobe.

In this guide:

 • How to plan for all the activities you intend to do
 • The frequency of wear for key items
 • Types of clothes can be the most versatile and form the core of ‘your vacation capsule wardrobe’

How to Plan for All the Activities You Intend to Do

Planning ahead of time is essential when packing a single suitcase. Before you start, plan your activities for the duration of your trip and list the items you’ll need for each activity. Here are a few tips to remember:

 • Before packing your suitcase, ensure to read the labels of any items you’re putting in it. This will help you know their care instructions and save you from surprises when you arrive at your destination.
 • Think about the weather. Incorporate warm-weather and cold-weather items into your suitcase to prepare for changing temperatures throughout your trip. Consider investing in a few packable items like a warm jacket or raincoat that will take up minimal space.
 • Pack multipurpose items to save more room in your suitcase. Look for clothes and accessories that can be worn in multiple ways to get the most out of every item you bring.

The Frequency of Wear for Key Items

Packing for a summer vacation is all about getting the most out of each item. To help you decide which items to bring, consider how frequently you’ll wear them. Start by selecting a few core items that will be worn most often and build your vacation capsule wardrobe around those.

Below is a breakdown of a few essential selections and how often you should wear them:

 • Shirts – You should bring at least two to three short sleeve shirts and one long sleeve shirt for cooler evenings. These can be worn multiple times if you alternate them throughout your trip.
 • Pants – Select a few pairs of jeans or chinos that can be dressed up or down with different accessories. Jeans are usually much more versatile and comfortable than shorts.
 • Shoes – Bring one pair for daytime activities and another for evening events. You can also pack a pair of flip-flops or sandals if you plan to be near a beach or pool.

Types of Clothes That Can Form the Core of Your Vacation Capsule Wardrobe

To get the most out of your suitcase, choose versatile pieces that can be used in different combinations to create multiple outfits. Here are a few of the best items for a capsule wardrobe:

Tops

A white T-shirt is an excellent base for any outfit. You can dress it up with a blazer and trousers or dress it down with shorts and sandals. For more formal occasions, add a collared shirt, which can also be worn for daywear with jeans. Additionally, a light-colored button-down shirt is perfect for days out in the sun and cool evenings in the city.

Bottoms

A pair of jeans is essential for any wardrobe and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. If you plan to spend most of your time outdoors, opt for a pair of athleisure pants and shorts. These are both comfortable and stylish. Finally, add a few accessories, such as a hat, sunglasses, and a statement necklace, to complete each outfit.

Outwear

Invest in a lightweight jacket or cardigan that you can layer over any outfit. This will keep you warm on cooler evenings and protect you from wind and rain. If traveling in a hotter climate, add a lightweight blazer or a kimono to your suitcase.

Shoes

Bring at least two pairs of shoes that can be used for both day and night occasions. A pair of trainers is excellent for sightseeing and casual days, while a pair of loafers or sandals are perfect for evening events. But remember rubber sole shoes are a must; they provide better traction and support. Moreover, if you plan to hit the beach, don’t forget to pack a pair of flip-flops!

A Few More Things to Note:

 • Narrow your color palette so you will have an easier time matching and interchanging outfits
 • The ideal colors for summer are stone-light khaki and blue for pants and shorts
 • An unconstructed coat or a vest would be suitable for more social outings
 • As for tee shirts, polos, and button-downs, you can use most colors to create multiple options
 • Accessories like hats, scarves, and sunglasses are always a great way to add some flare
 • Keep the garments trendy and up to date with the latest style and fit. For instance, if you’re going for a more modern look, opt for skinny or slim-fit jeans.

Packing for a summer vacation can be tricky, but with the right items in your suitcase, you can create multiple looks to help you stand out from the crowd. Make sure to keep your vacation capsule wardrobe to the essentials and pick versatile pieces that can be used in different combinations. This way, you won’t have to worry about being over-packed or underdressed.

Strike the perfect balance between style and professionalism.

The post Do’s and Don’ts of Casual Wear for Young Professionals Working in the Modern Workplace appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
In the current business landscape, there are a lot of questions about the appropriate casual wear for young professionals. How casual is too casual? With the advent of more relaxed dress codes and the rise of remote work, the traditional rules of professional attire have become blurred.

So, if you’re a young professional in a workplace with a casual dress code, you may be wondering what you should wear. Here are some tips to help you choose the right casual wear for work:

Do’s of Casual Wear

One fact that most people overlook is that casual doesn’t necessarily mean boring. So, you just can’t throw on any old thing and call it a day. There are certain dos when it comes to nailing the perfect casual look.

Here are some of the dos of casual wear that will bring you one step closer to nailing the perfect casual look for your workplace:

1. Invest in quality basics

Investing in quality basics is a great way for you to ensure you always look your best while being able to easily adapt your look for any occasion. Quality basics such as a good pair of jeans, a blazer, and a few basic sports shirts or tees can also be easily dressed up or down for any situation, making them ideal for a range of occasions.

For instance, you can dress up a blazer and a pair of smart jeans with a crisp white dress shirt and some smart shoes for the office. Similarly, you can dress down the blazer with a pair of casual slacks, a plain tee, and some trainers for a more relaxed look. So, buying quality basics is a smart investment that will pay off in the long run.

2. Dress for comfort

Comfort is key when it comes to dressing for work in a casual environment. As such, it’s advisable to look for clothing items that are lightweight and breathable. Cotton shirts, linen dresses, and apparels made from polyester are all great choices.

So, when choosing pants, you should consider chinos, khakis, or dress trousers. These items are comfortable and stylish enough for the office.

As for tops, there are a variety of options. Button-down shirts are a great choice for a more dressed-up look. Try T-shirts with a neat finish or polos for a more relaxed look. If you want to make a statement, pick a shirt with a unique design.

3. Mix and match your pieces

Mixing and matching clothing items can be an excellent way to express yourself while maintaining a professional image. So, it allows you to express your unique style, make the most of your wardrobe, and look put-together and polished.

For example, you can pair a nice pair of dress trousers with a classic cotton twill dress shirt if you’re male or a pair of utility pants and a Chambray blouse if you’re female. By combining different clothing items, you can create a variety of comfortable and professional outfits. This lets you get the most out of your clothing and saves you money in the long run.

4. Add fun accessories

Accessories can take an outfit to the next level, enabling you to show off your unique style and stand out. Whether it’s a unique bag, a bright-colored scarf, a fun hat, or a bold statement necklace, these accessories can help you show off your style in a professional yet fun way. Also, accessories such as belts, ties, and watches can take a casual look from drab to fab.

In addition to being stylish, these accessories can also be practical. For example, you can use a great bag can to carry your notebook, laptop, and other items you may need throughout the day. You can also use a scarf to keep warm on chilly days, a hat to block the sun, and a designer belt to add a touch of class to any outfit.

Don’ts of Casual Wear

It is important to know what not to wear when dressing in casual wear. There are a few items that are generally considered to be a no-no when it comes to casual wear. The following are the don’ts of casual wear:

1. Don’t wear apparel with offensive language

For young professionals who find themselves in a more relaxed work atmosphere, there are still certain expectations they must meet. One such expectation is that offensive language has no place in the workplace, whether it is spoken or printed on clothing.

Not only is offensive language on clothing unprofessional, but it can also offend other employees and make them uncomfortable. Furthermore, it can create an unwelcome environment in the workplace and give the impression that the company is unprofessional and unorganized.

Therefore, it is important for you to choose your clothing carefully and to dress in a manner that is appropriate for the workplace.

2. Don’t wear too many layers

When it comes to a casual dress code, less is more. Too many layers can make it difficult to move around and can often look bulky and unflattering. In addition, too many layers can be impractical and make it difficult to keep up with the job demands. Layering too heavily can also lead to getting too hot and can be distracting in the workplace.

So, it’s best to stick to a few pieces that fit well and are comfortable. Wearing a few layers lets you keep your look professional and stylish without compromising your comfort.

3. Don’t wear too much jewelry

While some jewelry can add a nice touch to any outfit, too much flashy jewelry can distract you and your colleagues, taking away from the task at hand. Wearing too much jewelry can also give off an unprofessional impression and make you look like you’re trying too hard.

So, when it comes to jewelry, less is more when it comes to workplace attire. Be sure to keep it subtle and tasteful. Leave the statement necklace, the bright earrings, and the flashy rings at home, and stick to a few basic pieces, such as a watch, a pair of earrings, and a necklace.

In addition to the above don’ts, you should not wear shorts, skirts, or dresses that are too short. Other types of clothing to avoid are pajamas, workout gear, and any clothing that is ripped, torn, or otherwise in poor condition. Additionally, you should not wear flip-flops and sandals to work.

The post Complete Guide to Finding Comfortable, Stylish, and Well-Fitting Turtlenecks for Men appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
Despite being overlooked in men’s fashion and considered outdated because of its popularity in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, turtlenecks are staple apparel in the wardrobe of the well-dressed. In addition, this type of sweater has experienced a sudden comeback among stylish gentlemen in the modern age. Read on to learn more about turtleneck sweaters, including how they should fit, style, and find the right men’s turtleneck.

What Is a Turtleneck?

A turtleneck is a sweater with a high collar folded over itself, creating a double layer at the neck. Wearers can dress these sweaters in various ways, from sleek classic ways to casual or street-style affairs. In the past, turtleneck sweaters created slim fits to the wearer’s body and were designed to have a ribbed knit on the folded neck portion.

While the name derives from the visual resemblance to a turtle’s skin folds on the neck, turtleneck is often used interchangeably or confused with other sweaters. For example, Mock Neck, Polo Neck, Roll Neck, Skivvy, and Zip Neck are some typical sweaters that resemble turtlenecks. However, these sweaters differ slightly from turtlenecks since others have long, looser, zipped, or high tubular necks.

Types of Turtlenecks for Men

Different types of turtlenecks exist to make them simple to wear and style, whether looking for classic or oversized turtleneck sweaters.

Classic Turtleneck

These include the first turtleneck designs that came about in the early 40s and 50s. Classic turtlenecks are relatively tight-fitting throughout the body and in the neckline. Besides, the neck is slim and thin, and as the original type of turtleneck, these sweaters offer a simple yet elegant fashion. Today, you can wear a classic turtleneck with seasonal fashion styles, from pants to shores and everything in between.

Cable Knit Turtleneck

A cable knit turtleneck is designed from cable-knit sweaters with a knitted pattern but is thicker than the classic turtleneck style. Cable knit turtlenecks are suitable when dressing a turtleneck with more casual outfits like corduroys or jeans. You can also include a fashionable blazer or coast over it for a perfect fit.

Oversized Turtleneck Sweater

These are up-and-coming men’s turtleneck fashion trends, ideal during colder days with a heavier jacket over them. It is a perfect fit when looking for casual wear to the office rather than to a fancy dinner with friends, a lover, or coworkers.

Zip Turtleneck

Like a quarter zip, zip turtlenecks feature a small zipper running from the chest area to the top of the neck. Again, this turtleneck does not bend over or fold but extends to the top of the neck area, similar to the classic turtleneck. However, when wearing this type of turtleneck, you need to wear a more tight-fitting shirt or an undershirt underneath.

Cowl Neck Sweater

Cowl neck sweaters are closer to a sweater than a turtleneck, but the style resembles turtlenecks. It is a great alternative to turtlenecks with a looser neck and usually falls over toward the front. You can include a cowl neck sweater in your wardrobe as it is part of the turtleneck fashion industry. Due to its looser neck, you might consider warmer coats or jackets when it becomes chilly.

Choosing the Right Men’s Turtleneck

With several types and fit options for turtlenecks, it is essential to consider various factors when finding a comfortable, stylish, and well-fitting turtleneck. Here are some things to consider;

Color

The colors you choose for your turtleneck should include seasonal fashion. For instance, white and off-white are ideal turtleneck colors for winter, contrasting the dark colors of the distinctive wintertime outfit. For summer, consider lighter colors, such as off-white, tans, beige, blues, and gray. Darker tans, oranges, deep yellow, navy, and browns are perfect for fall.

Fit

Turtlenecks are designed to be tighter on the body to complement the neckline that sits tight around the neck for warmth. However, when it comes to fit, it is a personal preference for what makes you feel comfortable. It also depends on the style of each turtleneck, such as cowl neck sweaters that are looser on the neck.

Turtlenecks also come in different weight classes, where some have thicker materials while others have thinner, layered materials. With turtlenecks, thinner materialled-turtlenecks, you will find them the tightest compared to thicker materialled-turtlenecks.

Layering

You can wear turtlenecks as undershirts or a shirt underneath, especially with a larger sweater turtleneck. Nonetheless, it is recommended to wear turtlenecks as undershirts since they are tight-fitting and provide adequate warmth.

How to Style a Turtleneck Sweater

Turtlenecks are unique in menswear and can be dressed easier than most garments. Here are some exciting ways to wear turtlenecks with style.

Turtlenecks With Suits

Turtlenecks are ideal when wearing a suit as it makes the style appear softer. For instance, you can combine a gray turtleneck with a navy suit to achieve a different look than wearing a white shirt and a tie. However, avoid combinations like a turtleneck with stripped suites and a jacket.

Turtlenecks for Evening Wear

Turtlenecks combine best with a tuxedo or dinner jacket, especially when you get a perfect blend of colors. Besides a black tie that creates a sturdier level of formality, a turtleneck presents a more appealing dress code for evening wear.

Wearing Turtleneck Casually

A thinner knit under layering apparel like a denim shirt or an overshirt is a great option to dress a turtleneck sweater. Finishing the dress code with a pair of jeans and boots creates flawless casual wear. You can also enhance a casual turtle sweater with flannel trousers or corduroy and a pea coat.

Bottom Line

Choosing comfortable, stylish, and well-fitting turtlenecks for men is crucial for your overall fashion regardless of the season. Considering the color, type of turtleneck, layering, fit, and style options are crucial to get you started. At Family Britches, we can help you get the fitting turtleneck and stand out. Contact us to learn more, or check out our turtleneck collections for men today.

The post Men’s Style and Fitting Tips on How to Dress Your Body Type appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
When buying clothes, body type is one of the most overlooked factors by both genders. This is why the clothes you bought on a mannequin do not fit exactly as you pictured. Generally, everyone’s body shape is different. By understanding your body type, you can easily highlight your best features by investing in the right clothes while hiding features you are least confident about. This article highlights the five most common body types in men and how to dress them appropriately.

The 5 Different Male Body Types

Research reveals that there are only five male body types based on the shape of the torso and the ratio of the hips to the shoulders to the waist. These body types include:

1. Rectangle

A rectangular male body shape is when your shoulder, hips, and waist have a similar width measurement. Men with this body type usually have tall but thin frames. Thus, if you have this body shape, you should aim to broaden your shoulders while creating an illusion of a narrower waist to give you that athletic look. Below are some suggestions on what to wear if you have a rectangular body shape:

-Wear structured blazers and jackets

-Play around with patterns, prints, and color blocks to add dimensions to your thin frame.

-Avoid vertical stripes, as they may exaggerate your shape.

-Stay away from slim-fit trousers and trousers with high waistlines since they will make your legs look longer.

2. Triangle

If you are larger around your hips and waist than your upper body, you fit in the triangle body shape, commonly known as the ‘dad bod.’ Thus, it is best to accentuate your upper body by broadening your shoulders and narrowing down the lower upper half. You can do this by:

-Wearing more structured clothing to broaden your shoulders.

-Opt for more dark-colored clothing with minimal prints and patterns.

-Single-breasted suits aid in giving you a slimmer and more relaxed fitting.

-Wearing vertical stripes for a more streamlined appearance that slims down your upper torso while also elongating it.

-Choose clothes with bright color panels, detailing, and patterns that run across the chest to give your shoulders a broader look.

-Avoid skinny fits, busy prints, brighter colors, roll necks, and fitted polo shirts, as they will make your shoulders look smaller and widen your waist.

-Stay away from belts with fancy detailing, as it brings attention to the roundness of your waist.

3. Oval

An oval body shape is the easiest to notice as it is when the midsection is wider than the hips and shoulders. These men usually have shorter arms and legs, increasing their midsection width. Luckily, it is also as easy to dress this body shape. All you have to do is select clothes that give you a slimmer and more structured appearance. Here are some tips on how to dress the oval body shape.

-Widen your shoulders by wearing structured jackets and blazers.

-Choose dark solid colors and fabrics with small patterns and vertical stripes.

-Avoid any horizontal patterns and stripes.

-Wear slightly tapered clothing and single-breasted suits, as they will give you a slimmer and elongated look.

-Go for slightly fitted pants, but not too tight. Ensure they leave some drape room around your waist.

-Stay away from oversized clothes and bulky sweaters, as they will make you look chunkier.

4. Trapezoid

A trapezoid shape refers to a man with a proportional ratio of their shoulders to hips to the waist. This is usually the average build that many designers use to make their designs. As a result, men with this body shape can buy clothes off the rack, and they will fit perfectly, with minor alterations. Nonetheless, below are some tips for dressing a trapezoid male body shape:

-Showcase your athletic build with slim-fitted clothes.

-Experiment with various patterns, colors, cuts, and styles. But stick to dark-colored pants to keep your body looking proportional.

-Horizontal stripes help widen your chest, while vertical stripes give you a longer look.

-Choose distinct detailing, patterns, and accessories to set you apart from the crowd. Perhaps a good watch, shoes, or colored pocket square.

5. Inverted Triangle

You likely have an inverted triangle body shape if you have broader shoulders and chest than your waist and hips. Although you have excellent muscle definition, owing to the many hours spent in the gym, it can be challenging to find good-fitting clothes. Luckily, here are some tips to help you out:

-Go for horizontal stripes to make your torso broader and match your shoulders.

-Show off your fit body by wearing slim-fit shirts and jackets. But they must be a size up to accentuate your physique further.

-Wear straight-leg pants to flatter your legs and balance out your look.

-Avoid patterns and prints around your shoulders and scoop necklines, as they will make your body look disproportional.

-Stay away from structured tailoring and wide lapels, which will make your body look heavier.

The post How Men Can Style Around Solid Quarter-Zip Sweater appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
Men’s solid quarter-zip sweaters are versatile, luxurious, and fashionable layering pieces, making them a fantastic go-to item for every man’s wardrobe. Generally, wearing a quarter zip sweater will help you stand out because they are more stylish than crewneck and turtleneck sweaters. But there are other benefits to wearing one as well. A solid quarter-zip sweater is a functional apparel that can be worn with anything to look stylish.

Once you have chosen the ideal solid quarter-zip sweater, you want to style it with other items to give your ensemble some flair. Here are some ideas. Keep reading to discover these fashionable pieces you can style around your solid quarter-zip sweater.

Pair a Quarter-Zip Sweater With a Button-Down Shirt and a Pair of Chinos

Additionally, the shirt’s collar will not flap outside the zip because it is buttoned up. You can dress this way with the top shirt button undone. Pick a shirt with a sturdy collar when making your choice. A flimsy collar would not contrast well with the quarter-zip sweater’s design.

You can even roll the combined sleeves up to show part of your forearm for an easygoing appearance, depending on how formal or casual the venue is. If you want to up the style, wear this outfit with chinos or khakis instead of jeans. Choose a pair of neutral chinos for the rest of the outfit. Navy, grey, and khaki go well with most things.

You should also not be afraid to combine contrasting colors, such as your solid sweater and a light button-down shirt.

Pair With a Shirt and Tie

With a shirt, tie, and pants, a solid quarter-zip will transition from casual to classy and be more than work-appropriate. Tie it, but make sure it stays inside the sweater when you do. Ensure the tie and shirt collars are visible and do not completely zip up the collar.

Layering Solid Quarter-Zip Sweater

The question is what to wear on top of your quarter-zip sweater, not what to wear underneath it. Even if the solid men’s quarter-zip sweater looks wonderful worn by itself or as the top layer, you can also use it as a middle layer under a parka, quilted field coat, or jacket during the colder months.

In this ensemble, you will need something fitting over the sweater yet loose enough to cover your entire body. In general, you do not want it to appear like you are bulking up your frame; instead, you want the final layered look to emphasize your shape rather than conceal it.

Pair With a T-Shirt and Jeans

Put a t-shirt under your sweater for an ultra-casual look. Always use complementary colors: A striped T-shirt with a tinge of green will make you look nicely put together if you wear a green sweater. Unless you are up for playing the match game, a simple white t-shirt is always fashionable under your sweater.

A step up from a t-shirt, a quarter zip is paired with a polo shirt to create a more business casual style worn with jeans for a casual appearance.

Pair With Checked/ Patterned Shirt

A practical quarter-zip sweater is ideal for layering on chilly days. Layer a solid quarter-zip sweater over your favorite checked shirt for the ultimate casual appeal. The check shirt’s pattern adds a little more to the outfit than a plain shirt does.

Make sure the color of the sweater you decide to wear goes well with the color of the patterned shirt. Everything from jeans to even chino pants will look excellent with this.

Accessorize Your Quarter-Zip Sweater

Adding extra pieces is a great way to stand out from other people who may be wearing clothing that is very similar to yours. Consider donning eyewear, jewelry, a cool leather watch, a hat when suitable, socks, or cufflinks to your solid quarter-zip sweater look.

You can choose a pair of well-publicized sneakers and accessorize with a few rings and a bracelet for a more street look.

Whether you love indulging in cardio exercises, core-strengthening workouts, or resistance fitness sessions, it’s always critical to select the right sports outfit. The shirt is an integral part of your sports outfit, and the kind you choose may mean the difference in how you feel after exercising. That said, you need to select your sports shirts with care, whether you work out indoors or outdoors.

This post provides valuable insights into the factors you need to consider to best choose your sports shirt. These variables may range anywhere, from comfort, anti-perspiration, UV resistance, thermal, and even fluorescent. Pick your choice!

Critical Factors to Consider When Choosing Sports Shirts

Effective workout sessions call for comfortable outfits, and there are several factors you should keep in mind when selecting a sports shirt. Below are some practical tips to help you choose the most versatile sports shirt for your summer wardrobe

1. The Sport Shirt’s Fabric

This is perhaps the most important criterion when purchasing a shirt, especially a sports shirt. Some fabrics absorb sweat, while others pull it away from your skin. You can choose from a range of materials that are more or less natural, including:

Synthetic Fabric

Synthetic material is commonly used in the production of sports shirts because it repels body moisture by wicking away the sweat from your skin. That helps in evaporating sweat quickly to keep your body cool. Synthetic fabric may be polyester, polypropylene, polyamide, or acrylic. Whichever you choose, the synthetic fabric features hydrophobic fibers that repel sweat, thus reducing drying time while keeping you cool. The only downside is that they quickly develop an odor from sweating if not prepared by the manufacturer to resist odors.

Cotton

Cotton is another standard fabric used to make shirts because it’s easy to care for and absorbs moisture. It doesn’t pull sweat away from the skin as synthetic fabric, nor do they help it dry quickly. That’s why cotton sports shirts can feel heavy and clammy as you exercise. However, if you prefer cotton, it would be best to choose organic cotton because it’s eco-friendly. In fact, there are recycled cotton shirts made from old clothes and scraps of leftover fabric.

Wool

Woolen sports shirts offer natural insulation, making them perfect for outdoor workouts or hiking in the mountains. It’s an antiperspirant fabric that alleviates the development of unpleasant odor due to sweating. However, it’s worth noting that this fabric is fragile and requires gentle washing techniques.

2. Buy the Right Fit

Whether you focus on how stylish your sports outfit is or are searching for a shirt that offers optimum comfort, you can choose from three different fits:

 • Slim fit – The shirt adheres to your skin and highlights your body curves and contours.
 • Regular fit – This depicts a shirt with a classic cut. It’s neither too close-fitting nor too “loose.”
 • Oversize fit – The shirt is looser and longer than a regular fit.

3. Shirt Neckline Type

As a sports enthusiast, you can choose a range of neckline designs for your shirt. Here are some neckline types you can consider:

 • Round neck – Generally, you might want to choose a shirt with a basic round neck to feel perfectly at ease when exercising.
 • V-neck – A V-neck shirt is perfect for individuals with larger necks. If you’re an avid bodybuilder, it would be best to consider a V-neck shirt as it offers room for muscular contraction at the neck.
 • Zip neckline – This is generally used on long-sleeved shirts for individuals who tend to feel the cold more.

4. Shirt Color

The color of your shirt doesn’t really contribute to your comfort, except when you plan to engage in an outdoor physical activity. Are you planning to go hiking? Perhaps you love doing your fitness sessions outside; in that case, it would help to choose a white shirt over a black shirt. Apart from that, you can also consider flashy colors for improved outdoors and summer accessories for enhanced style

5. Short-Sleeved or Long-Sleeved Sports Shirts?

Your choice between a long- or short-sleeved shirt depends on where you do your sports and what it feels like.

 • The place – When choosing a shirt based on where you do your sports, you need to ask yourself several questions: Is it indoors or outdoors? If indoors, is there air conditioning? If you exercise outdoors, what’s the weather condition outside? What’s the temperature?
 • What it feels like – People feel the temperature to varying degrees, and you have the freedom to try out a long-sleeved shirt or a short-sleeved version to find out how it feels like for you. You could be surprised which feels better.

If you don’t feel comfortable in a long-sleeved shirt, you can buy a short-sleeved button-down shirt or a polo shirt. Besides letting in air through the sleeves, the buttons enable you to fasten or loosen the buttons to enhance ventilation, depending on the atmospheric conditions.

The post Three Reasons Why Suits Are Still a Critical Component of Every Man’s Wardrobe appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
It’s tempting to believe that the men’s suits have somehow gone out of style or are a thing of the past. You wouldn’t be alone in this thinking. However, it’s just not true.

Men’s suits are just as necessary in today’s wardrobe as they ever were in the past.

We live in a casual world. Most jobs don’t require suits and business casual has become the norm. With that said, a suit is still an essential part of every man’s wardrobe. While you may not wear it every day, sometimes a suit is the best possible outfit to wear for an occasion. When those occasions arise, and they will, you don’t want to be caught without a suit that fits you and reflects your style.

And this is the problem. Maybe you bought a suit ten years ago and it’s been hanging out in the back of your closet ever since. It might be time to pull it out and see if it’s something you would still want to wear to a job interview, wedding, or another big day. There’s nothing worse than showing up at the new office wearing a suit that no longer fits correctly or doesn’t reflect who you are and where you are in life.

If you still need convincing, here are a few reasons you should have at least one suit in your wardrobe.

Wearing Suits Gives You a Confidence Boost

There is nothing quite like a quality suit that fits you just right to make you feel confident and ready for anything. A suit pulls you together and just looks good. If you are heading into a potentially game-changing meeting with higher-ups to pitch a project, do you want to settle for ‘business casual?’ Or how about a job interview, a special occasion, a high-end restaurant, or finally closing that amazing deal. For these occasions and many more, a suit is what you want to be wearing.

Sure, you could wear those gray slim-fit chinos and a polo shirt. But you will not feel the same level of easy self-assurance you get when wearing a suit tailored for your body. No matter who you are, a quality suit and coordinated accessories elevate your look and the way you feel. This confidence shows in your mannerisms and the way you carry yourself. Others will notice.

It’s Better to Have One and Not Need It Than to Need It and Not Have It

Nothing is worse than realizing you need a suit and don’t have one. That feeling of having to rush to the nearest department store to find an appropriate suit with no time to have it altered and not enough time to find just the right one for the occasion. Can you imagine showing up to a special occasion in an ill-fitting suit that you don’t even like?

While it’s a good idea to have one suit hanging in your closet to wear to a special occasion or professional event, it’s an even better idea to have two. A nice, classic navy blue suit is always good. Your second suit may be a nice, casual light gray or a royal blue pattern, or it may be decidedly formal. Either way, you can rest easy knowing you are ready for any occasion.

A Good Suit Conveys Authority and Gives Credibility

Going back to that job interview or big meeting. It’s just a fact that wearing a suit lends an air of authority and boosts your credibility. A suit says that you are taking the situation seriously enough to dress the part. Whether people realize it or don’t, the suit sends a message that you are there to do business and that you should be taken seriously.

It’s a sad fact that many people simply don’t dress the part for important occasions. If you show up for a job interview wearing a nicely tailored suit with a crisp shirt underneath, you will set yourself apart from other candidates. You will make an impression. People will remember that you not only looked amazing but that you put effort into showing up looking like you mean business.

Finding the Right Suit

If the idea of wearing a suit brings to mind images of stuffy professors or drab, poorly fitted business suits, it’s time to reacquaint yourself with what a suit can look like. When was the last time you shopped for a suit?

Today’s suits can be a mix of classic and modern, stylish and eclectic, structured and individualistic. And when the suit is tailored to fit you perfectly, it truly becomes yours. You’ll be surprised at the array of colors, patterns, and fabrics available. As for styles, a suit can be casual, fun, serious, formal, businesslike, or romantic.

Once you find the suit that suits you, you’ll see exactly why it’s still important to have at least one in your wardrobe.

If you are in the market for the perfect suit, contact us at Family Britches. We can help you find a suit that elevates your wardrobe so you can be ready for anything.

Business attire encompasses many different elements. As we return to our offices, you may be wondering which work outfits are best to wear now that the pandemic has changed much of the workplace dress code.

First and foremost, check your company’s policies and review your closet options. You may still be on Zoom calls but maximizing your appearance in the office is more important than ever. Below is a primer on what you should have available in the proper styles and fits.

At Least Two Suits for Work Outfits

Suits might seem like an outdated office style, but they’re still relevant in many occupations today. If you’re the type that attends executive meetings and handles formal matters, a canvas front with hand tailoring will help you pull off a formal business look.

Pick two high-quality suits for different office occasions. One should have a solid plain color like blue or gray, and the other can be slightly panache for a more diverse look.Lastly, decide whether you want the suits ready-made or custom-tailored to your body specifications.

Vest and Sweaters

Vests and sweaters are the complete men’s ensembles in less formal settings. In terms of functionality, they both keep you warm and, style-wise, help break the monotony of the everyday business traditional look.

There are different types of men’s sweaters, but the gold standard remains cashmere crew sweaters. These types are light but warm and can be worn on almost any occasion, especially the solid, neutral colors.

Even so, don’t be afraid to have a variety of sweaters at your disposal. Some other good options to have are:

 • Men’s cardigan
 • Turtleneck sweaters
 • Polo sweaters

Casual Business Attire

Most people became used to wearing comfortable clothes during the pandemic, and it’s now a growing culture in the workplace. “It’s the evolution of business casual,” says Loretta Choy, the Chief Merchandise Officer at Stitch Fix, a personal shopping and styling service.

Companies have modernized workplace dress code policies to ensure workers are comfortable performing at their best. Some of the fashionable business comfort outfits today include:

 • Jeans coordinated with long-sleeved sports shirts
 • Cotton slacks paired with neutral sweaters
 • Vests and unconstructed jackets
 • Short-sleeved knits layered below sweaters
 • Loafers, Oxfords, or any other comfortable shoe

Seasonally Appropriate Outfits for Work Outfits

The trick to excellent office dressing is not to be overly creative with your outfits. In addition, being aware of the different seasons in the workplace can help avoid too much judgment for your dressing style from bosses and colleagues. In this regard, have the following in mind:

 • Coordinate shirt and tie: Pair solid shirts with a tie that has a background hint of the same color. Avoid pairing solid-colored shirts with solid-colored ties. Also, know when to wear shirts with ties and when not to.
 • Collar style is distinctive: There are about 19 collar types, each with distinctive qualities. Knowing the kind you want is instrumental in determining the shirts you’ll wear to work on different occasions.
 • Incorporate sport coat options: Your outfit shouldn’t be too formal or deviate too much to the casual side. Sportcoats bring a sense of both professionalism and comfort at the same time. They also come in many patterns and colors and are durable.
 • Complement the style of the coats and any accessories: If you wear jeans, cotton on blends, or wool to work, pair it with a coat and matching accessories for a complete look. If you go for a sports coat, ensure that the trousers fit the overall style. Wearing pull-on pants will not cut it for most outfits.

Mix and Match Color Patterns

Color is an essential component in almost every office. Besides reflecting the brand presence and creating a sense of connection, color is a form of personal expression in the workplace.

Today, organizations are more lenient on what colors one can wear to work. However, avoid head-to-toe colors that may cause too much distraction. Instead, pop of color here and there in your outfit. Muted combinations are more appropriate for a staid office environment.

For example, you can pair a neutral suit with a bright-colored tie or get some colorful shoes to wear with more casual outfits.

Look Like the Best Version of Yourself With Our Work Outfits

Today, offices are less conservative about dress codes, so you shouldn’t be afraid to try out new styles. However, try to lean on the side of caution, especially if your organization’s culture doesn’t allow too much casual dressing. It’s better to look clean and professional than creative and rugged.

Menswear is tricky. You want your look to be fresh, but not trendy and certainly not avant-garde. That said, the recent move towards a more casual professional wardrobe makes it easier to introduce an updated look into your wardrobe without straying too far from a traditional aesthetic. Now, vests are the ideal solution to update your wardrobe.

The days of the Michelin Man- adjacent puffer vests are long gone; today’s choices are sleek, stylish, and multi-seasonal. They’re the perfect combination of form and function—you can style the same vest for a day in the woods or a casual day in the office, and they provide an extra layer of warmth against the brisk New England weather.

In this guide, we’ll explore the various types of vests, and show you how they’ll work with almost anything in your wardrobe.

What Exactly Is a Vest?

For years, a “vest” was part of a three-piece suit. The correct term for such a garment is “waistcoat” as it ends at your waist. However, many older gentlemen still think of that suit component when they think of a vest. They’re not completely incorrect, as the modern man’s vest can also be worn more formally with a dress shirt and blazer.

Most vests are made from synthetic fiber and filled with down or another form of insulation, but there are some lighter-weight options in natural fibers. The thing is, the modern vest is as versatile as your life. Indeed, it can go from a business casual day to a morning on the soccer fields to an evening out.

The Traditional Quilted Vest

This is the workhorse of your vest wardrobe. It provides warmth, but without the bulk of a heavier jacket. If you’re moving about, it also gives you a better range of motion than a coat with sleeves.

Styling Quilted Vests

This is the ideal first vest since you can style it with just about anything, from business casual to a day out with the dogs. Pair it with any casual pants, but here’s a good rule of thumb: the puffier the vest, the slimmer the cut of the pants. This balances you out and avoids that overly-upholstered look.

You can also wear a quilted vest with just about any shirt that doesn’t demand a tie. Running out to grab the paper and coffee? Toss it one over a tee. There’s a chill in the air when you’re teeing off? A vest isn’t bulky, it allows movement, and is easy to stash in your bag later. If you like to layer your shirts, add a vest over a polo and henley-collared shirt.

A vest in natural fiber, such as linen, cotton flannel, or corduroy, dresses up a bit better than its nylon cousin. You can take this vest to the office with a blazer and dress pants (again, in an athletic or slimmer cut) and loafers.

How to Wear a Linen Vest

If you’re ready to up your vest game, a lightweight version in linen keeps you comfortable on days when a quilted vest is too much, but it’s cool enough to warrant another layer. Wear a linen vest with jeans or chinos or even shorts on a warmer day.

There’s no reason you have to give up your vest when the temperature warms up a bit; you can wear a linen vest until early summer, and even throughout the summer for cool nights.

If you want to be super casual on the weekends, try a hoodie vest. Layer it over a textured shirt, a linen shirt, or a tee, but stick to jeans or shorts for this relaxed look. Athletic shoes are your best option for footwear or a driving shoe.

This vest would be a stylish and modern look for outdoor cocktails and dinner, or out walking the dogs.

Accessories for a Final Polish

These are super easy to accessorize. A baseball cap or a Stetson both look at home when you’re wearing a quilted vest with jeans. Plus, boots will complete an effortless look if you’re sporting the Stetson. Driving shoes with a vest gives off a very insouciant vibe like you’re taking the Aston for a spin in the country. Add a cashmere scarf on a chilly day, but remember not to over-accessorize.

Here are the rules for wearing jeans.

The post The 6 Rules for Wearing Jeans as Part of a Business Casual Look appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
The business casual look is a careful balance between formal business attire and a comfortable, laid-back approach to office clothes. You want clothes that are comfortable but still provide complimentary professional lines. The exact details of the business casual code vary from one workplace to the next. You might even be somewhere that permits jeans, or enjoys stylish jeans on Casual Fridays.

Even though dress codes are put in place to simplify the dressing choices for specific events or activities, they can sometimes be vague. Take business casual, for example, which brings us to the question, “Are jeans business casual?”

Jeans have evolved from the old days, with quality styles and fits becoming appropriate for almost any business casual event and social evenings. How you style them can determine whether your outfit suits a business casual dress code.

How do you know which jeans are good for your business casual wardrobe and how to combine them?Allow Family Britches to show you options and ways to coordinate your jeans for your wardrobe needs. Stick to the following rules to pull off a business casual outfit with jeans:

Rule # 1: No Holes, Distressing, or Patches

First impressions matter a lot when putting together a business casual outfit. The best way to think of business casual jeans is as denim slacks, and not rocker jeans. The idea here is to maintain a professional look while taking a break from your day-to-day suit-and-tie or formal look. Avoid any damaged integrity of the jean fabric, just like you wouldn’t wear suit pants with a ripped knee. Avoid any pair of jeans with a kneehole or even stylish distressing – even if done by top clothing designer brands. Patches, which go in and out of style, are also not appropriate for business casual Friday or that casual business retreat weekend.

Rule #2: Solid Color Without Fade or Too Much Acid-Wash in a Business Casual Look

Should you wear faded or acid-washed jeans if the fabric is intact? In general, that answer is no. Unless you are working at a trendy startup with a rocker vibe, keep your jeans one solid color. They can be pale jeans, dark jeans, black, gray, or even colorful jeans. But choose one, well-dyed solid color.

Rich blue jeans can look extremely classy in the right ensemble. Light acid washing can look good, but use your judgment on acid wash style.

Dark jeans are perfect for this purpose since they offer endless styling options. You can pair them with most blazers or your favorite dress shirt in your wardrobe. If you are going for a dark-colored pair of jeans, combine it with a neutral or dark blazer. Doing this will help add contrast to your business casual outfit.

Rule #3: Quality Style and Fabric – Know Your Manufacturers

With a rise in poor-quality jeans in the market, shopping for business casual jeans can take time and effort. If you don’t get it right, you may end up with a cheap-looking outfit that can’t bring out your stunning professional side.

Know your jeans manufacturers. The quality of your fabric and the style of the jeans cut will define how business-casual your final look will be. Stick to manufacturers who are known for making very high-quality jeans that are up to the standards of your business casual office expectations of the dress. After all, casual Friday is really a chance to show off your slightly less somber attire, not an invitation to wear your weekend gardening gear.Manufacturers that make business casual jeans are Teleria from Italy, PT from Italy, and Alberto from Germany. Explore these and other brands. Find a brand with the right cut for your body and fabric that looks excellent next to a blazer.

Rule #4: Go Classy With Your Shirt and Jacket

Speaking of blazers, your choice of shirt truly matters when wearing jeans in a business casual outfit. In order to make sure your jeans are formal enough, you will want to lean toward formal and classy with your choice of shirt and jacket.

A crisp dress shirt is always a good choice when paired with jeans, add a sporty button-up shirt can add a dash of personality to a more casual business office. Depending on the office, you can tuck in your dress shirt or leave it loose for a devil-may-care.

A simple button-down collared shirt under the blazer can also give your outfit a ‘dressier’ look. A T-shirt can also replace a button-down shirt for a more relaxed feel.

 • In the summer, polos and knit shirts can be used to show how comfortable you are in more casual attire.
 • In the winter, a crisp dress shirt collar peeking over a formal knit sweater can be a very dashing urban look.
 • For outdoor activities, a vest can strike the perfect balance between action and business.

If you need to take it a step up while wearing jeans, add a blazer or suit jacket to make it clear that you may be casual, but you mean business. For a feminine but polished look, you can go with the classic blazer, blouse, and denim combo. It is easy to pull off since all three items are wardrobe essentials. Add sneakers or heels, depending on the occasion, to spice up the look.

Rule #5: Use Accessories to Upscale the Ensemble

Don’t forget the accessories. Your choice of belt, wallet chain, and other little accessories can perfectly upscale your ensemble when wearing jeans.

Choose a belt with subtle detail and a modest yet elegant buckle. The belt is a great opportunity to add a touch of formality to your casual jeans style.

Other formal accessories to add to your outfit include watches and necklaces in metallic or dark colors to balance the casual jeans. Men’s clothing accessories can be tricky – but briefcases, handbags, ties, belts, and leather shoes are also good options.

Rule #6: You Can Get Jeans Fitted for the Best Business Casual Look

Finally, did you know that you can get your jeans fitted? Custom-fitted pants are a staple of business attire. You need the pant to fall just right to provide the right lines of the ensemble and personal all-day comfort. You don’t have to find beautiful quality jeans that also fit perfectly off-the-rack. You can absolutely have the right business casual jeans fitted to you to make them perfect for your wardrobe and future casual Fridays. Here are some tips when having your jeans fitted:

 • Your business casual jeans should be comfortable enough to allow you to move around. Ensure that they are also relaxed when you are sitting down or standing up.
 • The denim should be moderately thick and stretchable to allow for these movements.
 • Ensure you wear the right size of jeans, and then tuck in your top. A straight-leg pair of jeans will do. Also, avoid skinny jeans since they are geared more toward casual settings.

Integrate Jeans With the Business Casual Look

If you are looking for the perfect fit and selection of business-casual-worthy jeans, you can find them at Family Britches. When it comes to belts, quality trumps price hands down. You’ll need the Plain to Moc Grain, a bison fine leather belt with a silver buckle. They also come with a gold buckle option, if you’re feeling extra fancy this fall. This specific belt is made in the USA.

11. Athletic Wear

You can get an amazing activewear line by Vuori, Faherty, and Patrick Assaraf. They design comfortable, washable, and eco-friendly clothing, suitable for your work from home program. While not many offices recommend the gym meets office kind of clothing, it certainly won’t hurt to have some in your closet, since most employers are slowly realizing the vanity behind judging an employee by their wardrobe.

In many cases, men’s athleisure that’s appropriate for work is clothing made from neutral-colored stretch fabric, like knit henley shirts, plain v-neck tees, woven or knit pants, seamless polo shirts, knit bomber jackets, and wool sneakers. One example in our catalog is the ultimate Tecno pants, designed for unlimited mobility and comfort. It has anti-crease properties and has full shape retention. It’s also appropriate for any occasion.

Whether you’re entering the professional world for the first time as a recent graduate or you’re embracing a brand new career path, you might be confused about what constitutes appropriate dress in the workplace. To be sure, wardrobe guidelines have changed a lot in recent years. Although 47% of senior managers interviewed in a 2016 survey revealed that they felt their employees dressed “too casually,” the reality is that many American workplaces no longer require their staff to wear suits and ties.

In fact, a business casual wardrobe is typically considered the standard for many professionals in 2021. But what exactly does that involve? Let’s take a closer look at how “business casual” is defined and explore some must-have style elements that you’ll need to own.

What Does Business Casual Really Mean?

“Business casual” is one of those terms that you’ve probably heard before, but you might not be able to put your finger on what it actually means. It doesn’t help that there’s not a clear-cut definition for what constitutes business casual. Generally speaking, business casual includes elements of more traditional businesswear mixed with relaxed, less formal pieces.

Of course, what’s deemed appropriate business casual dress can vary from workplace to workplace. Most employers will provide a handbook for workers that contains a dress code policy. This can be used as a reference that can further guide employee wardrobe choices and outline expectations. Keep in mind that, in a job setting, it’s always better to err on the side of formality. Dressing too formally won’t reflect poorly on you as an employee, but dressing too casually could. If you’re going in for an interview or starting a brand new job, you’ll probably want to avoid wearing men’s jeans (unless you’re explicitly told that’s the standard) and opt for some men’s casual trousers and a button-up shirt instead.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the essentials you’ll need to build your business casual wardrobe.

What Are Some Business Casual Staples All Men Need?

Every workplace might define business casual a bit differently, but there are some styles that are universally acknowledged as wardrobe staples. These include:

 • Button-down shirts in a solid color, subtle pattern or muted check
 • Polo shirts or half-zip fleeces or vests
 • Crew neck sweaters (to be worn over a dress shirt)
 • Blazers or sport coats
 • Men’s casual trousers made of cotton or wool
 • Close-toed shoes with dark dress socks
 • Dark belt
 • Ties (optional)

On the other end of the spectrum, there are a few types of garments that should not be worn in a business casual setting. When building a business casual wardrobe, you should steer clear of including:

 • Ripped or distressed jeans for men
 • Tank tops or casual short-sleeved t-shirts
 • Flip-flops or sandals
 • Shorts
 • Anything with clashing patterns or blinding colors
 • Clothing with stains or wrinkles

If you stick to the must-haves and avoid these mistakes, you’ll have a good starting point from which you can build your business casual wardrobe. That said, you’ll want to maintain a bit of flexibility. Here are a few simple rules to follow if you want to make a great first impression with your business casual attire.

 1. Mimic the Manager: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When you’re starting a new job, you probably won’t be too far off base if you use your boss or your manager as a point of reference. While they might dress a bit more formally than other employees do, that could give you an edge in their eyes. Dress for the job you (eventually) want and you might impress the Powers That Be. Of course, be sure to observe how other employees are dressing and make adjustments to align with the standards of your workplace as you become more comfortable.
 2. Consider Your Industry: Different industries will often have slightly different standards for business casual dress. It might be frowned upon to wear a shirt with a loud pattern or casual trousers for men in a unique color if you’re working in finance or healthcare. But if you’re a graphic designer or working in entertainment, more fashionable pieces might be the standard. Likewise, those who work the tech industry might be more accustomed to even more casual dress in the workplace; sneakers, band tees, and even hooded sweatshirts aren’t out of the ordinary. That said, you should still invest in some versatile men’s casual trousers and button-up shirts that could work for almost any occasion.
 3. When In Doubt, Ask: Employers tend to like hires who take the initiative to ask questions. During an interview or before your first day on the job, ask about any specific dress code policies or how the company culture impacts the choice of dress in the workplace. While you shouldn’t ask your manager to approve your outfit, it’s usually fine to ask about whether they’d prefer you opt for men’s casual trousers over jeans or whether wearing a suit and tie is standard. You’ll also want to look the company up on social media to get a feel for the general vibe and how employees dress on a daily basis.

With this information in mind, you’ll be well on your way to building your ideal business casual wardrobe. To learn more about our men’s casual trousers and other must-haves, please get in touch with us today.

During the pandemic, millions of Americans made the switch to remote work. But even prior to 2020, telecommuting was becoming more popular than ever. Working from home can be a great way to stay productive while keeping employees safe.

But while you might not have to go into the office every day, you’ll still want to look and feel put-together. Not only will that ensure you’re perceived as a true professional during your Zoom conference calls, but you’ll also have more energy and possess the focus you need to stay on top of your responsibilities.

It might be tempting to stay in your pajamas all day, but science says that the clothes you wear can have a big impact on how others see you — and how you see yourself. At a time when mental health has never been more important, maintaining a work from home wardrobe can ease the effects of social isolation and allow you to reap the benefits of keeping up with your routine.

What Do You Need in Your Work From Home Wardrobe?

You might know that having (and using) a work from home wardrobe can be beneficial for both job performance and overall state of mind. But what are some must-haves for your work from home wardrobe? Whether you’re new to this way of working or your closet could use a refresh, there are some staples that will serve you well.

Of course, comfort is key. But that doesn’t mean you have to live in yoga pants or oversized sweatshirts. Business casual can be a good guideline to follow, as it’s professional without being stuffy or restrictive. Knit, stretchy fabrics are also great choices because they allow for movement without wrinkling. Woven pants, stretchy denim, knit tops, cardigans, soft sweaters, and v-neck tees are great options for employees of all genders. For women, flowy dresses, high-quality leggings, pullovers, and even fitted blazers are great options. And for men, henley tops, short-sleeved button-downs, polos, chinos, loafers, and “shackets” (overshirts that combine shirts and jackets into one) and soft constructed unlined jackets are popular choices.

While the normal office rules may not apply, you’ll still want to look polished without feeling restricted. Adding a few versatile basics to your work from home wardrobe can ensure you impress your boss and co-workers without sacrificing your comfort. Casual Menswear https://www.familybritches.com/casual-menswear/?swpmtx=fdad16ac7c41b7ebc888e7470495df2d&swpmtxnonce=aaed1be658 Mon, 19 Apr 2021 19:09:18 +0000 https://www.familybritches.com/?page_id=55662 A more casual dress code has become increasingly popular today, but what exactly defines casual menswear?

The post Casual Menswear appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>

Although formalwear hasn’t completely disappeared from our closets, many of us have very few occasions in which a tuxedo or ball gown might be an appropriate choice. Workplaces now eschew suits and ties in favor of business casual menswear. In fact, a recent survey found that only one in 10 employees wear a suit to work, while seven in 10 opt for more casual clothing for the sake of comfort. And in our personal lives, most of us would prefer to be laid back and free of restrictions and rules when it comes to our wardrobe.

As such, the demand for casual menswear is on the rise. We want clothes that are affordable, easy to maintain, and comfortable — but we still want them to look good. But because it’s easy to cross the line into clothing that’s a little too casual, it might be helpful to know what constitutes casual menswear to ensure you get the most out of your closet.

What Is Casual Menswear?

The definition of casual menswear is difficult to nail down, but that doesn’t mean that anything goes. Casual menswear should still be tailored, rather than ill-fitting, and offer a sense of sophistication. The main hallmark of casual menswear is that it’s versatile and looks smart; it’s just as natural a choice for a day of work at your startup as it is for a social outing with friends, exploring a new city, or running errands around town.

Casual menswear can run the gamut of garments, including everything from button-down shirts and chinos to blue jeans (in both relaxed and skinny fit) and soft sweaters. Even basics like v-neck tees and polos can fall under this category. Leather and denim jackets are commonly worn, as well as an array of footwear ranging from sneakers to leather dress shoes. Printed short-sleeved shirts, sunglasses, leather belts, boat shoes, and even hats can all be considered casual menswear.

While casual menswear is seemingly a massive category, there are certain characteristics that these items share — and specific pieces you should avoid if you want to stay within this style. Even if these garments are designed with a relaxed fit in mind, they’re still constructed or tailored in a way that highlights proportion and won’t hide the body in an oversized manner. Neutrals are a great place to start, which will allow you to get playful with a bold pattern, hat, or materials like denim. And while t-shirts can certainly be considered casual, you should refrain from wearing anything that looks sloppy, dirty, or worn-out in an unfashionable way. Casual menswear doesn’t mean decades-old sweats or shorts. Even if you feel physically comfortable in your ensemble, you’ll want to rethink it if you’d feel uncomfortable wearing it for at least three different occasions.

Ultimately, casual menswear is a staple for your wardrobe. To see our selection, take a look at our inventory of products or contact us today.

Men’s Athleisure For Work https://www.familybritches.com/mens-athleisure-for-work/?swpmtx=fdad16ac7c41b7ebc888e7470495df2d&swpmtxnonce=aaed1be658 Thu, 15 Apr 2021 21:30:44 +0000 https://www.familybritches.com/?page_id=55538 When comfort is your top priority, our selection of men’s athleisure for work can help you look professional without feeling restricted.

The American workplace has become increasingly more casual in recent years, particularly as many of us have now made the transition to working from home. Although a suit and tie were once expected in professional settings, an emphasis on stylish comfort has led to an increased interest in men’s athleisure for work.

Numerous companies no longer require employees to wear a stuffy button-down shirt and suit jacket to work. Instead, men’s athleisure for work has been embraced even by CEOs and high-level executives. This is a culmination of business-casual-meets-gym-wear — and it’s taken many workplaces by storm.

What is Men’s Athleisure For Work?

Although not every office environment is keen on the athleisure movement, many employers have come to the realization that judging their staff by their wardrobe may be a little too elitist to align with their true values. Besides, wearing a suit and tie doesn’t necessarily mean business goals will be achieved. The productivity and innovation displayed by those who wear men’s athleisure for work may rival — or even outpace — their peers who stick to more traditional workplace attire.

So what exactly falls under the category of men’s athleisure for work? Keep in mind that it’s probably still not appropriate to wear a grubby t-shirt and gym shorts to the office. But you can wear comfortable, breathable garments that can easily take you from your desk to your workout.

In many cases, men’s athleisure for work might include knit henley shirts, plain v-neck tees, woven or knit pants, seamless polos, knit bomber jackets, and wool sneakers. Most of these pieces will be made out of neutral-colored stretch fabrics that are easy to move in but that provide a put-together appearance. The key is to feel comfortable without looking like you just rolled out of bed. Layers are also helpful, especially if you spend your days in a cubicle (or working from home on your couch) but plan on going for a run after you clock out for the day. Be aware that your colors should still compliment and coordinate.

One of the appealing things about men’s athleisure for work is that you won’t be distracted by constricting fabrics. Tailored suits certainly have their place, but they can make it difficult to focus on your daily tasks. Who can stay productive when they’re too warm and uncomfortable? Athleisure items can make sure nothing holds you back from achieving your goals — all while allowing you to still look your best. To see more of our selection of men’s athleisure for work, take a look at our product inventory or contact us directly.

What do you wear when an occasion calls for you to wear a bit less than a suit, but a lot more than casual attire?

An unconstructed (or unstructured) jacket or blazer is one answer to this question that will see men through from the workplace to a weekend gathering.

We’d go as far as to say an unconstructed jacket is a wardrobe essential, especially for the versatility it can provide. Here we’re looking at this wonderful jacket and how to wear it:

Free download: How to choose an unconstructed jacket

What is an unconstructed jacket?

An unconstructed jacket can be described like a shirt jacket or blazer. It retains the shape and hallmarks of more formal dress, but does not have shoulder pads, canvas or possibly even an inter-lining. (Some versions have no lining, or just a partial lining to allow for pockets).

Some other common features of the unconstructed jacket might include patch pockets, exposed seams and working cuffs.

The unconstructed jacket is often more like a medium or heavy-weight shirt, however it is cut like a jacket with vents, lapels and pockets. The goal is to be lighter in weight and have an artful casualness and elegance. The shape is more soft and loose, but this type of construction needs to be well-tailored and accessorized.

You will find unconstructed jackets in different wools, knits, linens or blended combinations. In fact, they have become a popular staple for men’s wardrobes.

When to wear an unconstructed jacket

As we mentioned, one thing we love about this jacket is its versatility; that said, let’s start with when NOT to wear it. The answer is quite simple – in any workplace or on any occasion when the dress code is formal, an unconstructed jacket is not appropriate. It doesn’t have the padding, lining and stiffer lines that are expected in formal situations.

However, the unconstructed jacket has gained acceptance in many workplaces where the dress code leans more toward business casual. Think spring or summer wear – these jackets are lightweight and very breathable.

If you’re someone who travels a lot, an unconstructed jacket may be your new best find. The breathability means they are very comfortable and the unconstructed nature makes them easy to fold or tuck away. If you choose a jacket made from wool or a wool blend, the natural stretch of the wool helps any creases to drop out. (It’s often as easy as hanging your jacket in a steamy bathroom).

In fact, the unconstructed jacket usually requires less care than a tailored suit jacket. It will often stand for being rolled into a suitcase, meaning you don’t have to travel with bulky garment bags.

When else is a great time to wear your unconstructed jacket? After work! You’ll see people sporting this jacket at weekend events or social gatherings in the evenings. It allows you to feel comfortable in both the business and leisure environments because you won’t be over or under-dressed. In fact, you can still coordinate a slick ensemble that wouldn’t be out of place in settings where a higher standard of dress is expected.

Fitting your unconstructed jacket

While the unconstructed jacket doesn’t have the tighter formality of your tailored suit jacket, it’s still important to get the fit right. In any outfit, the key to looking sharp is how it fits. A sack could look good on a person if it is tailored to fit!

With this in mind, if you’re purchasing an unconstructed jacket off the rack, it’s important to buy the right size. It should fit you close to your body, yet leave enough room for layering. For example, on a cold day, you might wear it on top of a fitted Merino cardigan over the top of a t-shirt for a stylish casual look.

Of course, the best option of all is to have your unconstructed jacket tailored to fit you. This is something we can help you with here at Family Britches!

How to coordinate an unconstructed jacket

The best thing about an unconstructed jacket is its versatility for different sorts of outfits. You could compare it to chinos – it’s not out of place in a more formal setting, nor is it overdone if you’re meeting someone for coffee at the weekend.

We find that the newer silhouettes in trousers and shirts compliment this type of jacket well. For example, our Canali Kei Model Unlined Sport Coat ensemble will look sharp in any business casual setting. Add interest to your outfit by choosing a shirt with a modern pattern.

unconstructed jacket

The above example features a slack in tropical wool, but you might also go with your regular dress trousers or some of the new stretch blends of trouser.

Your unconstructed jacket can be worn in a casual setting with shorts. For example, think about a weekend at the yacht club, pairing your jacket with chino shorts and a button-down shirt.

As another casualwear example, pair your unconstructed jacket with an upscale pair of jeans, a plain white t-shirt and some dress sneakers, boots or dress shoes. This is the sort of outfit that will look stylish for your weekend social outings.

While you can wear your jacket in less formal business settings, the look tends to be better without a tie. With this in mind, newer, trimmer fit shirts in performance fabrics, no-iron patterns or solids, linens and geometric patterns can coordinate well.

If you’re really unsure about how formally to dress for a situation, your unconstructed jacket is a great choice. In most cases, you won’t be over or under-dressed if you pair it with some tailored chinos and a button-down shirt. If you know the dress code is more on the casual side, something like a polo shirt can look sharp under your jacket.

In any situation, the unconstructed jacket can be the perfect replacement for a sweater, completing an outfit for the office or social events.

Final thoughts

The unconstructed jacket is a personal go-to for many on our team. The special thing about it is its versatility across a range of dress codes and situations. If you’re going from your business casual workplace to an event, this is the jacket that will see you through both.

Dress it up or down, roll it into your suitcase for travel and pair it with your jeans at the weekend. We recommend you get a good unconstructed jacket for your wardrobe – consider it an investment piece that will see you through many stylish ensembles.

The “fashion vs. style” debate has gone on for decades.

Many people take them to be synonyms, but we can see some very clear differences. Where fashions tend to be cyclical and seasonal, or mass trends adopted by many, style is more unique and personal.

As Yves Saint Laurent famously said; “fashion fades, style is eternal.”

What would you prefer to harness when creating your own look?

Fashion vs. style

Many people can look back upon their teenage years and remember certain items that were “must haves” among those who coveted fashion. The 1990s tended to be all about wearing name-brands and ensuring that the branding was obviously displayed.

Like most things fashion, that trend was short-lived. These days you can probably remember some of those things and cringe. Nevertheless, that’s how couture was looked upon, at least among young people. If you did happen to be a teenager in the 90s, you probably now see personalized, well-made items from quality materials as the height of luxury. This is a step away from “fashion” and more toward style.

Consider some of the famous style icons of recent decades; Coco Chanel and her pantsuits, Audrey Hepburn and the little black dress, and Karl Lagerfeld with his black suits, dark glasses and tied-back white hair. Their clothing was simple and understated, but it communicated something about them, an indication of persona and a recognizable look.

Women’s fashion

Style doesn’t necessarily include anything considered “high fashion,” but often tends to be more timeless. Your individual style might not be a Hepburn or a Chanel – perhaps you go for a look that is all about comfort or function. Style is overall impacted by much longer-lasting factors than fashion, for example; weather, culture, profession, upbringing, beliefs, body type and religion.

“Style” is much more personal and lasting than “fashion”

We can point to a few common influences upon modern style. For example, concerns about the environment, human work conditions and clothing waste have lead to many preferring quality and tailoring over “fast” fashion. Minimalism is also an influence – these people look to own fewer clothing items, but ensure that they are of high-quality and easy to mix and match.

Street style is also a heavy influence. While people used to turn more to the catwalk or what celebrities were wearing, the power of social media and blogs for sharing the style of everyday people has changed the industry. We now see more magazines and style websites that devote sections to street style.

Styles come in many categories, but here are just a few to ponder – do any of these sound like you?

 • Vintage (classic 1920s – 1970s styles)
 • Bohemian (an arty, hippy style)
 • Chic (tailored, elegant and sleek)
 • Casual (combining elegance with comfort)
 • Preppy (“college” look – A-line skirts, polo shirts, blazers and blouses)

How to define your own style

“At its essence, style is a complicated, endlessly fascinating human capacity. It is our spirit and what we think, our creativity, our individual way of being, and our intention for our clothes. To nurture a meaningful relationship with fashion, our task is to understand style, to hone it, to carefully craft it and make it our own.”Nadine Farag

One of the best places to start with any discussion about your personal style is to review what you wear on a regular basis. Everyone has a personal style, whether they’ve thought about it consciously or not. Sometimes people just find that style difficult to define – perhaps they have a wardrobe full of clothing they don’t really enjoy.

Pull out your “go to” pieces – what sort of style are they? Don’t worry if you can’t name a particular fashion style, many people don’t fit neatly into one box. The person who loves chic workwear may prefer Bohemian style on weekends, for example.

Find style inspiration

This is a sort of “data-gathering” exercise. There are a number of ways to look for inspiration, for example, a popular method is to find looks you like and pin them to a board on Pinterest. You might also gather inspiration from magazines, movies, your friends, the street – really anywhere that style is to be found.

Start to look for any patterns in your preferences – do you favor certain looks, styles, cuts or colors? Conversely, is there anything you strongly dislike that you’d never want to wear? For some people this might be things like certain colors, or a preference for not wearing revealing clothing.

Think about your lifestyle

Do you have a lot of things in your wardrobe that you never wear? Perhaps you’ve bought pretty, delicate dresses that still have the tags on, or other items that seemed like a good idea at the time, but never come out of the closet.

Sometimes it’s just that while you really liked those pieces, your lifestyle doesn’t give you the opportunity to wear them. They’re not practical for the situations that you commonly have to dress for.

A fact that the fashion industry rarely acknowledges is that we can’t own or wear everything that catches our eye. You might appreciate that dress, but realistically you have no occasion to wear it. Advocates of “slow fashion” take this approach – admire the clothing, but only purchase the things you honestly will wear.

Women’s fashion

Try clothing on

With some idea of your style preferences and how they might relate to your lifestyle, try clothing on. Look for fits, fabric and colors that you enjoy, as well as any that you would like to avoid. The only way to know if a particular cut suits you is to try it. Sometimes items that look like they’ll be amazing fail to impress, while other cuts may surprise you.

Seeking the help of a professional stylist or tailor can also help you to discover looks that you’ll want to wear repeatedly. Wardrobe consultations are part of our services at Family Britches, which we’re looking at next.

Book a wardrobe consultation

When we conduct a wardrobe consultation with clients, we always look at what they often wear, so that we can determine what might be suitable as foundation pieces for them. You get clothing that you enjoy wearing, also ensuring that it is up-to-date for current trends.

Booking a wardrobe consultation is a great way to simplify your style journey. You can even have one via Skype if you can’t make it to a physical location. The key to success is to share your color and style preferences, as well as isolate any problems you encounter when preparing wardrobe ensembles for daily attire, weekend and special events.

Here are some steps you go through with us:

 • Help us understand your workplace, weekend and special events dressing requirements.
 • Share your personal fit and style preferences with our staff.
 • Review your closet to help determine what you still want to keep in your wardrobe and eliminate items you no longer wear.
 • We will suggest options for your reaction and explain what we can suggest to compliment your body type and coloring.

The result will be a successful consultation and a wardrobe that you love to wear, fit for any occasion. It’s a great way to harness your own style and ensure you have a few beloved and up-to-date staples to rely on. You can book a consultation here.

The post What Does “Business Casual” Really Mean? appeared first on Family Britches.

]]>
The term “business casual” sounds like you’re going to have no trouble finding something to wear. It sounds easy, but if you’re in a new job or you’re unfamiliar with the term, it can be a bit stressful.

What are they talking about? Is it business, or is it casual? Can I wear my weekend attire to the office?

This dress code is a frequent source of confusion for workers who worry about going too far in either direction. No one enjoys standing out for the wrong reasons! So, what does this instruction usually mean? Let’s dig in:

Avoid business casual faux pas – download our checklist here

The truth about business casual

The definition of business casual is generally taken to mean “dress professionally, but more relaxed attire than traditional business wear is okay.” In truth, that doesn’t really shed a lot of light on it, and definitions of business casual tend to vary from business to business.

In some businesses, business casual basically seems to mean “you don’t have to wear your tie,” while in some Silicon Valley companies, jeans paired with a dress shirt have become ubiquitous.

There is no standard definition of business casual for every workplace, so it’s important to do your homework first, especially if this is your first time dealing with it in your current job. No one enjoys feeling like they’re overdressed, but there’s nothing worse than being underdressed for the occasion. This isn’t a day at the beach – it is probably a mistake to pull out your weekend athleisure wear!

Define business casual in your workplace

If you’re an employee wondering what to wear for your first business casual day, try asking around about the dress code. If you can’t get a clear answer, we’d err more on the side of business rather than casual attire. Dressing on the conservative side can get you through under the radar, but it’s difficult to dress up an outfit that is too casual in the first place!

If you happen to be a manager or owner reading this, it’s up to you to define what business casual means for your business and ensure that employees know. This is something that can cause unnecessary angst, and you definitely have better things for staff to be focusing energy on. Your new employees should be arriving on their first day both confident and comfortable!

It doesn’t hurt to have some specifics stated in the employee manual, or even in email communication. No one likes the feeling of having to guess!

Do’s and don’ts of business casual

The first and most obvious “don’t” is to avoid showing up to work in something that might be worn to the beach. Shorts are generally a no-no, as are t-shirts or polo shirts unless otherwise specified. Footwear should still be professional, such as a pair of loafers or oxfords that can easily go with an outfit dressed up or down. This is a critical mistake that many people make, forgetting to consider footwear or thinking that they can get away with sneakers. In a professional setting, sneakers are usually out.

Do keep your clothing simple. Find neutral-toned clothes that you can mix and match, such as plain dress shirts to be worn without a tie. Depending on the office code, you may want to avoid accessories, patterns or colors that can be distracting. In more formal “business casual” offices, you can opt for your suit, sans tie. The Eton Shirt in a plain fabric, or the Canali double-faced wool sport coat are great options for a casual Friday showing. Try pairing the sport coat with jeans or cords if these are acceptable as part of the office dress code.

Do “dress for the job you want.” This means avoiding getting sloppy at all, even if it is casual Friday. Wear clothing that is clean, ironed and impeccably presented. This means no holes or loose threads. You should also ensure that the clothes fit you well. Today is not the day to wear clothing that is too loose or too tight, or generally ill-fitting. Consider visiting your tailor for a business casual look that keeps you on the professional side. Clothes that fit well are worth the good impression they create.

Pay attention to your fabric choices too. Distressed or frayed fabrics, or cheap-looking, shiny synthetic fabrics should be avoided. You may be able to include some nice, wrinkle-free wools or lightweight, breathable blends. Crease-resistant shirts are also a good option.

Do dress for style rather than trends. Style tends to mean elegant clothing in a cut and fabric that is made to outlast any fashion trend. These sorts of pieces are versatile, and you will often find yourself mixing and matching them for years. On the other hand, clothing that looks good on a model as part of a seasonal trend doesn’t necessarily translate well to the office.

Do maintain consistency with your regular standard of dress. If your style is professional and conservative every other day, it’s not the best idea to show up looking unrecognizably casual. If your company is one where jeans are acceptable for casual wear, make sure you’re wearing your best jeans. A pair with a very dark wash and no embellishments or tearing is usually a safe bet.

If you’re in the position where you’re not sure of the business casual standard, do wear layers. If you err on the side of formal dress but have the ability to remove layers, then you can dress your outfit down if need be. For example, if you’re wearing a dress shirt, cardigan sweater and sports coat, the coat and sweater can easily be taken off.

When it comes to accessories, remember the “less is more” adage. Keep them tasteful and unobtrusive as a general rule. Of course, this is one that also very much depends on the culture of the particular workplace. In some offices, more individual flair is encouraged.

If jeans are permitted, go for a dark wash such as these Alberto slim fit jeans.

Tips for achieving a business casual look

One way to think about business casual is to think of it as dressing down your more formal attire. That doesn’t automatically mean putting a coat over a pair of jeans – think of the whole outfit from start to finish.

For example, will you swap out your dress pants? What will you substitute them for? Consider how your regular formal wear might look with chinos or corduroy trousers. Your collared shirt is usually a safe bet, although you may want to go for a plain fabric.

Ditch the tie and think about your coat. Will you keep your regular sports coat or blazer, or will you switch it for a knit or cardigan? As an alternative, you might consider a tweed blazer for a less formal look.

Finish your outfit off with a nice pair of leather loafers and basic accessories such as a leather-strapped watch and belt, and you now have an ensemble that will take you from the office to an after-work function in town.

Final thoughts

The term “business casual” can be a minefield for the uninitiated in your company. In fact, if you hire people and have told them that Fridays are business casual without providing them with any guidelines, we virtually guarantee they’ve Googled to find what you mean!

And if you’re the person in the shoes of the newbie trying to figure out what to wear, it’s always better to err on the safe side first. Go for a more conservative look until you’ve established the ways of the workplace.

Business casual always errs more toward professional dress than casual. With a few well-considered pieces though, you can mix and match your outfit to suit any occasion.

Do you take business trips or travel for work?

If so, it’s probably important to you to be able to wear professional clothing and keep your wardrobe looking good while you travel. Impressions matter when you attend work meetings, and no one wants to arrive looking bedraggled!

This isn’t always an easy thing to achieve. While in the golden age of aviation, flying somewhere meant something and was heralded by well-dressed passengers with plenty of legroom, the modern era is far removed.

If you’re fortunate enough to travel business class, you still get a little room to spread out, but if you’re flying economy, you tend to be packed in like farm animals on a stock truck. Cramped conditions can mean havoc for your professional clothing as shirts get wrinkled and blazers get crammed into overhead lockers.

You start to worry about any meetings that are scheduled shortly after landing, so what can you do to stay looking fresh?

Invest in quality luggage

First of all, it is well worth investing in the right luggage to carry your wardrobe! Good luggage keeps you looking stylish and protects your clothing.

If you’re going for more than a couple of nights, a sturdy wheeled-case, made of lightweight, durable material is a must. Think aluminum, polycarbonate or leather. If the duration of your trip is a couple of nights or less, consider a casually stylish holdall.

Professional clothingThe right luggage is one thing, but how you pack it is also very important. Wrinkles are caused by friction among your belongings, so one suggestion is to pack clothes in plastic garment bags, or even among dry cleaning bags. The plastic reduces friction. Stuffing your clothing with tissue paper first keeps it from flattening out and helps it to maintain its shape. Consider using packing cubes to stow your small items and toiletries.

There are many travel sites which suggest rolling clothes in order to save room and to avoid wrinkling your garments. However, we do not suggest you roll your tailored shirts or good trousers. Rolling still leads to wrinkles in the clothing and if you look closely at that advice, it’s often accompanied by pictures of t-shirts or other more wrinkle-resistant clothes.

One suggestion to avoid rumpled clothing is “bundle packing.” This is definitely a better idea than rolling clothes, especially if you’ve got a few items you need to pack. Bundle packing involves wrapping your clothing around a bundle of wrinkle-resistant clothes, with your most delicate items being on the outside of the bundle. So, your suit jacket or tailored shirts would be on the outside.

It’s not a perfect system, but it can work to at least keep your most wrinkle-prone pieces in good condition. This is because those items on the outside have less pronounced folds in the making of the bundle. The video below from NBC News gives a demonstration of bundle packing:

Plan your travel outfit

No matter how conscientious you are about packing, you’ll still almost certainly arrive with some clothing in need of an iron. Of course, if you’re dashing from the airport straight to a meeting, you don’t have time for this!

One strategy is to carefully plan your travel outfit ahead of time. Choose crease-resistant clothing where possible to wear on the plane. This means choosing high-quality fabrics such as wool, jersey, cashmere or knits. Wearing your blazer helps to save it from getting wrinkled in your luggage or the overhead locker.

Consider your footwear as well. Shoes take up valuable room in your bag when space may already be at a premium. They also have to be taken off and put back on again quickly at airport security.

With this in mind, something like a high-quality pair of loafers can be a good choice to wear as you travel. They slip on and off easily, look stylish and can be dressed up when worn with your suit for work meetings, and dressed down with chinos or good jeans for evening drinks.

Choose crease-resistant shirts

Creased shirts are a common nuisance for business travelers. Even following packing techniques to avoid wrinkling clothing it’s difficult to keep shirts looking their best out of a suitcase.

Choosing crease-resistant shirts can be well worth the investment. “Resistant” means that, if you follow packing techniques to minimize folding and creasing, the shirt should still look very presentable.

Professional clothing

The Eton dress shirt is made from 100% premium cotton and is crease-resistant.

You can’t always prevent your shirts from getting creased during travel, but you can take steps to ensure you’ll be able to get them looking their best at your destination. Try to book a hotel room that caters to business travelers, including having an iron available. If you don’t have an iron available, try hanging creased clothing in the bathroom while you shower. The steam can work to smooth out any creases.

Be a minimalist

You need to consider the weather at your destination and any functions you will be attending when you pack. However, it is better to be a minimalist when it comes to the number of items you pack.

Overstuffed suitcases lead to creased clothing, so it’s a good idea to prioritize classic, and versatile pieces. Look for items that you can mix and match to create different looks, whether you’re meeting with clients or headed to an informal gathering.

For example, your crease-resistant dress shirt can be paired with chinos or a dark pair of jeans for an after-work event, or, wear your blazer with a plain t-shirt or polo shirt, paired with jeans. Another suggestion is to pack your clothes in three coordinating colors, allowing you that mix and match flexibility. You really don’t need to pack a lot of pieces, as long as you focus on bringing the right ones.

Carry “emergency” items

It can be irritating and downright stressful to realize you’ve got a wardrobe issue while you’re away on business. Missing buttons, loose threads or unraveling seams can put a blight on your day.

You can pack your own emergency sewing kit so that you’re prepared if a malfunction happens. Simply put rolls of black, white and grey thread, a sewing needle, a few buttons and a handful of safety pins into a small box or tin. In a pinch, a safety pin can take care of a loose seam or hem, while it only takes a couple of minutes to sew on a replacement button.

Another thing to consider including is stain removal wipes (such as Shout Wipe and Go). Let’s say you were holding a cup of coffee when your aircraft hit a spot of turbulence – you want to be able to remove the evidence as quickly as possible! Stained clothing creates just as bad an impression as creased clothing, so these are useful to keep around even while you’re not traveling.

Don’t live out of a suitcase

As a final piece of advice for travelers, the less time your clothing spends bundled into a suitcase, the better if it is to remain looking good. A top tip is to unpack as soon as you reach your hotel room and hang all clothing up. The longer it sits, the more likely it is to crease.

If looking your best while traveling is a priority for you, this is possible to achieve with a few smart packing and grooming choices. Look for items that are versatile and well-made, and pack to reduce creasing. Consider the seasons and look to mix and match items as much as possible. A minimalist suitcase means fewer items squashed together, helping your wardrobe to stay looking good.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Richard Buggee recently explained the philosophy behind Family Britches:

“Our philosophy has always been that when you are a specialty store, you need to be more unique.

We carried Polo in 1971 when Ralph just started his line.

We launched Patagonia when they offered one short (the Stand-up) and one shirt.

Tommy Bahama offered three floral shirts.

Vineyard Vines had a few ties.

We no longer represent any of these lines because they are no longer true to their roots. Family Britches searches the market worldwide, to give our customers to experience special merchandise they won’t find everywhere and on line. Combining elements from exceptional not cookie cutter manufacturers allow us to present a fresh approach to your wardrobe each season.

We love to hear our customers say “I haven’t seen this anywhere.”

Our collections of merchandise are truly for the individual who really loves of seeing, feeling and trying on clothing combinations that are new to the market. We can’t wait to share our passion and market knowledge. We are enthusiastic as we were nearly fifty years ago when we started in the barn on top of the hill.

An example is how excited we get to see a new shirt line that had a different washing technique. Not earth shattering like polyester but that is what you call passion for product and innovation for our customers.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
